Whether you’re looking to make her a DPS spellcasting prodigy or focus on her debuff skill, the key to success is understanding her strengths and optimizing her abilities. In this guide, we’ll dive into the best Yatzli companion build, covering the ideal abilities, upgrades, training, and more to help you get the most out of this valuable ally in your adventure.
Everything About Yatzli Companion Build in Avowed
Creating a strong companion build in Avowed can keep you in the fight and lead you to victory. No matter what weapons or skills you are using in your Envoy build, choosing certain active abilities and passives is necessary to optimize Yatzli’s potential. Moreover, making optimal choices for Yatzli is less stressful than creating Envoy’s build. This is because companions do not earn attribute points, nor can you alter their armor or weapons. Therefore, the strength of your Yatzli build will depend entirely upon how you assign her skill points.
In Avowed, all companions have three active abilities to choose from, along with one possible passive. When a companion first joins, they will only have their first ability automatically unlocked.
Additionally, every ability and passive can be upgraded if you choose to spend another skill point on it. Each has three optional buffs that you can unlock. Moreover, you can choose to unlock just one, two, or all three in any order depending on your needs.
Finally, you can respec all of the skill points for any companion for a reasonable gold fee. The cost will go up the more skill points your companion has, however.

How to Unlock Yatzli in Avowed

You’ll first encounter Yatzli shortly after you enter the second region of Emerald Stair. She’ll ask you to retrieve a Godless vase artifact for her, but that’s all for now. It’s not until you reach the city of Thirdborn in the region of Shatterscrap that you will finally be able to recruit her. When you first arrive in Thirdborn you’ll find her on the southeastern side talking to the city leader Temerti. Start a conversation and you’ll learn about the archmage Ryngrim.
Ryngrim has created a magical barrier around the ruins both you and the Steel Garrote are looking for. Yatzli is excited to hear about the archmage’s presence and wants to speak to you about traveling with you.
The conversation will conclude, with Yatzli telling you to meet her at the tavern. Head west, to the back of the Fleet Master’s Perch. Yatzli will be waiting outside and after this second conversation, she will officially join your group.
Yatzli Permanent Bonuses with Training
Yatzli is not only able to accompany you in battle but she, like the other companions in Avowed, can offer training to boost your attributes. You unlock these trainings by speaking regularly with your companions. Ask them about themselves, your current location, missions, etc.
Here are the dialogue options and the attributes they increase in Yatzli’s training:
- +2 Perception: “You always see the traps before I do – can you show me what to look for?”
- +2 Intellect: “Let’s sharpen our wits.”
- +1 Intellect +1 Perception: “Whatever you want to teach me, I’m ready to learn!”
Best Abilities, Skills, and Passives for Yatzli
Essence Explosion and Arduous Delay of Motion are the best active abilities for our Yatzli companion build guide in Avowed. The first is a powerful damage-dealing ability, that goes from single-target damage into a burst of AOE on explosion. The second ability has a slowing effect, which can help you with crowd control on the battlefield.
Furthermore, you can upgrade these skills to increase their damage and effectiveness in battle.
- Essence Explosion (Active): Yatzli invokes a strange arcane power that explodes upon hitting an enemy, releasing a burst of Essence and Explosive Damage.
- Minoletta’s Missile Battery (Active): Yatzli conjures a volley of arcane missiles that seek out nearby enemies.
- Arduous Delay of Motion (Active): Yatzli manipulates the arcane energy around an enemy, slowing them for 10 seconds.
- Blast (Passive): Yatzli’s attacks burst into a small area of effect when they hit an enemy.
Essence Explosion

Essence Explosion is an active ability that Yatzli can use as burst damage against a single target. Furthermore, when the explosion hits, but effects can hit other nearby enemies. This is a fantastic ability and it’s also the one that automatically comes unlocked when Yatzli joins your party.
Here are the three passive upgrades available for Yatzli’s Essence Explosion ability, which you can unlock with additional skill points:
- Concentrated Essence: Increases the size of the blast caused by Essence Explosion.
- Fire Aspect: Essence Explosion deals Fire Accumulation to hit enemies.
- Scrappy Casting: Reduces the cooldown for Essence Explosion by 33%.
We highly recommend spending a skill point to unlock Scrappy Casting, which will cut the cooldown time on this ability by 33%. This will allow you to fire off this ability more times during combat. Therefore, you should always send this ability out to hit the most important target immediately after you start combat.
Minoletta’s Missile Battery

Minoletta’s Missile Battery is an active ability that Yatzli can use to fire multiple beams of magic into several enemies at once. This is a good area-of-effect ability that you don’t even really have to target. However, these individual hits on many enemies will do less damage than her single target explosion.
Here are the three passive upgrades available for Yatzli’s Minoletta’s Missile Battery ability, which you can unlock with additional skill points:
- Speedy Salvo: Increases the rate of fire for missiles from Minoletta’s Missle Battery.
- Horizon Strike: Increases the maximum range of missiles from Minoletta’s Missle Battery.
- Shock Aspect: Missles from Minoletta’s Missle Batter deal Shock Accumulation to hit enemies.
The best upgrade for Minoletta’s Missle Battery is Speedy Salvo. This will speed up the rate of fire, thus allowing Yatzli to cast more damage-dealing missiles than before.
Arduous Delay of Motion

Arduous Delay of Motion is an active ability that Yatzli can use to contribute some crowd-control support to the battle. When this is cast, it will slow an enemy down for 10 seconds. They’ll still be able to move, but will be much easier to dodge, parry, or strife around them.
Here are the three passive upgrades available for Yatzli’s Arduous Delay of Motion ability, which you can unlock with additional skill points:
- Energy Sap: Arduous Delay of Motion intensifies its slowing effect on enemies.
- Exhausting Field: Arduous Delay of Motion creates an area of effect that afflicts all enemies within its radius.
- Frost Aspect: Arduous Delay of Motion periodically deals Frost Accumulation to afflicted enemies.
We highly recommend spending a skill point to unlock Frost Aspect, which will cause the ability to deal some Frost Accumulation to affected enemies. With enough build-up of Frost Accumulation this will freeze and enemy in place. Consequently, strengthening the crowd-control aspect of this skill.
Blast

Blast is Yatzli’s passive, which when unlocked turns all of her abilities into area-of-effect skills. This can become a really strong passive with the right upgrades and can freeze enemies, interrupt blocks, and even damage surrounding walls.
Here are the three upgrades available for Yatzli’s Blast passive, which you can unlock with additional skill points:
- Explosive Blast: Blast deals Explosive Damage, breaking enemy Blocks, destroying walls, and shattering frozen enemies for bonus damage.
- Force Blast: Increases the Stun dealt to enemies hit by Blast.
- Affliction Blast: Blast has a 5% chance to inflict Frozen, Ignited, or Shocked.
We highly recommend spending a skill point to unlock Affliction Blast, because the conditions it can inflict are so powerful. Frozen will freeze an enemy in place, Ignited with create a DOT, and Shocked will release a shockwave that inflicts stun.

Consequently, companions are only earning a skill point about once every 3-5 of your Envoy levels.
Best Companion Alongside Yatzli

Giatta is the best Avowed companion to use alongside Yatzli in our companion build guide. With her damage-dealing abilities and crowd control, Yatzli’s main weakness in combat is her physical defense. This is where a strong healer like Giatta comes in, with abilities and passives that can keep her and the Enovy in the fight.

How to Play Yatzli Companion With All Main Classes

Yatzli is primarily a spellcasting damage dealer in Avowed but also has some abilities that can provide some support. Her crowd control ability can slow even the strongest of monsters, and should often be used against bosses.
Ideally, when playing with Yatzli you will want to cast her Arduous Delay of Motion shortly after the start of combat. You will want to target priority enemies such as strong bosses, or healers. Once this slowing effect has been triggered, use her Essence Explosion to blast the boss. Finally, you can then use Minoletta’s Missile Battery to deal less powerful hits to the smaller enemies.
At this point, you’ll have to wait for the cooldowns on her abilities to expire. This will take at least 40 seconds, so focus on yourself and your other ally’s abilities in the meantime.
Yatzli Companion With Envoy Fighter Class
The Fighter is a great class to pair with Yatzli, especially if you are using a tanky, defensive build that you can use to help protect your allies. As you rush into battle, have Yatzli cast her Arduous Delay of Motion to slow down the highest-priority enemy. This should always be the healer/priest/cleric NPC because even if you bum-rush the boss, those healers can negate all of your hard work in moments.
Then, after you defeat the healer and you’re waiting for the cooldown Arduous to end, go ahead and fire off Essence Explosion against the boss. With the proper upgrade to this ability and Yatzli’s passives, this ability can hit for massive damage.
Here is a list of skills and abilities that you should activate for the Fighter class with Yatzli:
- Active Abilities & Passives
- Ability 1: Barbaric Shout
- Ability 2: Clear Out
- Passive 1: Constant Recovery
- Passive 2: Retribution
Yatzli Companion With Envoy Ranger Class
The Ranger class in Avowed is incredibly versatile and even comes with its own summon creature that can act as a temporary tank. At Level 18, take the Bear Ally ability and invest another skill point in the passive that makes it a tank. Consequently, it will take the pressure not only off of you but also protect Yatzli and your other companion.
Additionally, as a Ranger, you’ll most likely be starting combat from stealth using the Shadowing Beyond and Divine Thorn abilities. This means that you’ll want to wait until after you’ve made your first strike before targeting an enemy with Arduous Delay of Motion and Essence Strike.
Here is a list of skills and abilities that you should activate for Ranger class with Yatzli:
- Active Abilities & Passives
- Ability 1: Shadowing Beyond
- Ability 2: Tanglefoot
- Passive 1: Survivalist
- Passive 2: Evasive
Yatzli Companion With Envoy Wizard Class
When playing as a Wizard class, your Envoy playstyle will work very similarly to Yatzli. You will both be doing damage at range and need more physical protection against enemies. In this case, you may want to consider switching out your second companion, Giatta, for Kai instead. His ability Fire and Ire can instantly take enemy aggro away from you, giving you a chance to heal and recover.
Alternatively, at Level 18 you can instead choose to spend a couple of points on the Bear Ally ability in the Ranger skill tree. This druid-like spell can be upgraded so that the bear roars a taunt, actively pulling enemies away from you and your allies.
Here is a list of skills and abilities that you should activate for the Wizard class with Yatzli:
- Active Abilities & Passives
- Ability 1: Arcane Veil
- Ability 2: Fireball
- Passive 1: Blood Magic
- Passive 2: Armored Essence
