Meet all of the companions joining you in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and discover the best for skills, party combinations, and more.
The companions are often the highlight of the Dragon Age franchise, with each entry in the series introducing us to new characters we get to know and come to love. Companions are fully fleshed-out characters with their unique backgrounds and beliefs. Many will have their own agendas even while working together with you on a common cause. Consequently, they won’t always agree or approve of actions you take or choices you make.
Furthermore, companions play a vital role in combat, and having the right party combination is important. Whichever companion or two is your favorite, choosing a class that balances with them will make your journey much easier. In this tier list, we’ll be taking a look at all of the companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, breaking down their strengths and weaknesses, and recommending the best builds and party combinations.
What are Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard?
There are seven companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard that can join your cause as you fight against Solas and beyond. Each companion will have their own background, class, skills, and faction. Contrary to previous entries in the Dragon Age series, in The Veilguard you will only be able to have two companions join your active party at any given time.
Moreover, companions can also be romanced. For many Dragon Age players, deciding which companion to romance on their playthrough is one of the first decisions they make. Often, if you know who you wish to romance before starting the game, it can influence how you create your character and what class you decide to take. Therefore, you can make sure to have a powerful party that is balanced around their class, skills, and role.
Best Companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard Ranked
The best companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the one you wish to romance or bring along with you in your combat party as often as possible. Each companion has a specific class and you can create viable builds for all. However, it is usually best that you don’t overlap their class role with yours in combat. For example, if you wish to romance a companion who has the warrior class, it’s probably best not to choose the warrior for your own character.
However, some of this overlap can mitigated by class specialization. A two-handed DPS warrior could work in the same party as a sword and shield tank warrior.
Rank | Companion |
---|---|
1 | Lucanis Dellamorte |
2 | Davrin |
3 | Neve Gallus |
4 | Lace Harding |
5 | Emmrich Volkarin |
6 | Bellara |
7 | Taash |
1. Lucanis Dellamorte
Lucanis Dellamorte is a rogue class companion in Dragon Age: The Veilguard and the grandson of Caterina Dellamorte, the Antivan Crows’ First Talon. Harshly trained by Caterina, Lucanis developed remarkable resilience and skill, though he resented her brutal methods. Despite this, Caterina favored Lucanis and intended to name him her heir. However, he had no interest in accepting the role of First Talon.
Moreover, Lucanis is an older, but dashing heartthrob who could appeal to many of the female fans of the series. His disinterest in the leadership role his grandmother wants him to take will likely result in an interesting quest chain where the player helps him resolve this tension with his family.
Lucanis deals necrotic damage in battle with his dual-daggers, whilst supporting his companions with potions and buffs. While Lucanis is a Rogue, we don’t yet know what his class specialization might be. However, given the description of his abilities, he is likely to be a Duelist, with a focus on critical strikes and agile physical melee combat.
Therefore, if Lucanis is to be one of your primary companions, the best party combination to accompany him would be a Warrior tank and a ranged damage dealer. This second class could either be a Mage or a Rogue with the Veil Ranger class specialization that focuses on combat with the bow. Depending on which class you choose for your character, a good secondary choice for a companion would be Davrin (tank) or Neve/Harding (ranged dps).
Lucanis Dellamorte companion features and party recommendations:
- Race: Human
- Class: Rogue
- Weapons: Dual-wielding daggers
- Faction: Antivan Crows
- Best Party Combination: Tank (Warrior) and Ranged damage dealer (Rogue or Mage)
- Best Second Companion: Davrin or Neve/Harding
2. Davrin
Davrin is known as a bold and charming monster hunter. His special Vallaslin (facial tattoo) shows he comes from a Dalish elf clan, which he left to become a Grey Warden. He also cares for a young griffon named Assan. Davrin’s journey from his Dalish roots to joining the Grey Wardens highlights his bravery and dedication.
A strong and handsome young elf, Davrin’s life is focused on fighting the Blight. This means he can’t have children and constantly faces danger. Consequently, Davrin may be reluctant to pursue a romance at first, and your character may have to be persistent.
Davrin’s combat style is that of a tank, keeping enemies taunted, aggro, and stunned while staying alive. His class is that of a Warrior, and although his class specialization is not determined, he would likely choose the Grey Warden specialization of Champion. This fits his choice of sword and shield
Consequently, if you wish to romance Davrin the best party combination to bring with him would be damage dealers and support. You could choose either the Rogue or Mage classes, as both can provide strong dps with the right builds. Additionally, you can also choose skills from both classes that offer crowd control and other types of support. Depending on which class you choose for Rook, a good secondary choice for a companion would be Lucanis (DPS) or Emmrich (support).
Davrin companion features and party recommendations:
- Race: Elf
- Class: Warrior
- Weapons: Sword and Shield
- Faction: Grey Wardens
- Best Party Combination: DPS (Warrior or Rogue) and DPS/support (Rogue or Mage)
- Best Second Companion: Lucanis/Taash or Emmrich/Bellara
3. Neve Gallus
Neve Gallus is a private detective and a member of Tevinter’s rebellious group, the Shadow Dragons, fighting for a better future in the harsh streets of Minrathous. Known for her sharp wit and cynical outlook, Neve is deeply committed to justice and reform in Tevinter. She moves with a prosthetic leg made from dwarven-crafted metal, a testament to her resilience and resourcefulness.
Unfortunately for anyone looking to romance this beautiful spellcaster, you will have to do some work to get past her tough exterior. She does not believe in mage superiority, so such flattery is not likely to get you very far.
Neve specializes in ice magic, wielding a short staff or wand as her weapon. Ice magic is a fantastic support choice because Frost spells can debuff and slow your enemies. However, mages are typically more vulnerable to physical attack. Therefore, you’re going to want to make sure that Neve has strong protection in the form of at least one front-line damage dealer. A tank like Davrin is a good choice for a second companion if you aren’t going with a Sword and Shield build yourself. Taash is also another Warrior option that fights more along the lines of a straight DPS, rather than a traditional tank.
Neve Gallus companion features and party recommendations:
- Race: Human
- Class: Mage
- Weapons: Staff
- Faction: Shadow Dragons
- Best Party Combination: Tank (Warrior) and DPS (any class)
- Best Second Companion: Davrin or Taash/Neve/Harding
4. Lace Harding
Scout Harding was raised as a surface dwarf in the Fereldan Hinterlands near Redcliff. When the rift opened, she joined the Inquisition and quickly became a master scout. Interestingly, she possesses “unexpected magical powers,” which is mysterious since dwarves typically have no connection to the Fade and cannot become mages.
Players of the previous game, Dragon Age: Inquisition, will recognize this cunning and competent dwarf scout. She was not a full companion then, but played a vital role in the story and may have even had a flirting relationship with the Inquisitor. If you wish to romance Harding as Rook, you’ll have to hope you can impress her just as much!
Harding’s combat style is a bow user with abilities that can debuff enemy armor and stagger them at range. As a Rogue, she will have better armor than a Mage, but ideally, you will still want someone in your party to provide strong defense. Davrin as a Warrior tank is the best option, though Taash as a Warrior would be viable so long as you had an aggro ability like Dragon’s Roar available. However, if you choose to play a Warrior, then a Mage support companion with a healing spell like Emmrich would be useful.
Lance Harding companion features and party recommendations:
- Race: Dwarf
- Class: Rogue
- Weapons: Bow
- Faction: Inquisition
- Best Party Combination: Tank (Warrior) and Support (Mage)
- Best Second Companion: Davrin or Emmrich
5. Emmrich Volkarin
Emmrich Volkarin is a necromancer and a member of the Mourn Watch within the Mortalitasi. With over thirty years of experience in the Mourn Watch, Emmrich is known for his expertise in necromancy. Moreover, he is always accompanied by his skeletal assistant, Manfred.
In an interesting twist on the tropes we usually see associated with Necromancers, Emmrich is a scholar who takes the task of protecting innocents from the occult very seriously. A dignified individual, he is likely not expecting romantic interest at this point in his life, but so some that may make him even more attractive.
Emmrich’s combat style is a ranged spellcaster who summons forth spirits of the dead to both entangle and hinder his enemies. Significantly, he also can heal his allies with the Replenish skill, which makes him a highly valuable companion. Again, a Warrior tank will be invaluable for protecting Emmrich from direct attack. Your best bet for a third party member will be a strong DPS. This could be another Warrior such as Taash or a Rogue such as Lucanis.
Emmrich Volkarin companion features and party recommendations:
- Race: Human
- Class: Mage
- Weapons: Staff or Orb
- Faction: The Mourn Watch
- Best Party Combination: Tank (Warrior) and DPS (any class)
- Best Second Companion: Davrin or Lucanis/Neve
6. Bellara
Bellara is a mysterious member of the Veil Jumpers, an adventurous group dedicated to exploring ancient elven ruins. Known for her bravery in facing the reality-warping magic of the Arlathan Forest, Bellara is an elf mage with a passion for uncovering ancient secrets.
Moreover, Bellara is a creative and romantic person with a strong sense of self. She has a clear idea of who she is and what she wants, and she is willing to push herself to her limits in her pursuit of finding answers. Romancing such a fun and confident character may seem ‘easier’ than others, but Bellara likely has depths
Unlike other mages in previous Dragon Age games, Bellara uses a bow as her primary weapon, showcasing a unique and versatile fighting style. In conjunction with her bow she also manipulates the Fade and uses electricity and control magic to debuff enemies. As another ranged caster you will want to support Bellara on the front lines with a good defensive tank. A secondary class or companion could be another support option with healing like Emmrich or a strong DPS build like Lucanis or Taash.
Bellara companion features and party recommendations:
- Race: Elf
- Class: Mage
- Weapons: Bow
- Faction: Veil Jumpers
- Best Party Combination: Tank (Warrior) and DPS/support (Rogue or Mage)
- Best Second Companion: Davrin and Lucanis/Emmrich
7. Taash
Taash is a Qunari living in Rivain and a member of the Lords of Fortune faction. She’s a dragon hunter who lives for adventure and would never back down from a fight. Furthermore, she is described as thrill-seeking, headstrong, and blunt. However, you should underestimate her hard-headedness for a lack of intelligence. Taash is deeply knowledgeable about many topics, and has many unexpected connections.
Romancing Taash could be intriguing due to her Qunari background. Under the Qun, Qunari don’t have traditional families like other nations of Thedas. Moreover, their approach to relationships is pragmatic and often devoid of deep emotional ties. However, Taash’s affiliation with the Lords of Fortune suggests she might not strictly stick to Qun philosophy.
Taash combat style is melee aggressive, with double axes and spewing out fire breath. Although she is dual-wields her weapons and is not a traditional tank, Tassh does have a skill called Dragon’s Roar that functions as a taunt. However, it doesn’t always work on some of the strongest bosses. For regular fights, you’ll likely want a support mage for healing or crowd control like Emmrich or Neve. Secondly, a good DPS like Rogue could help make short work of enemies with Taash’s powerful skills.
Taash companion features and party recommendations:
- Race: Qunari
- Class: Warrior
- Weapons: Dual-axes
- Faction: Lords of Fortune
- Best Party Combination: DPS (any class) and Support (Rogue or Mage)
- Best Second Companion: Neve/Emmrich or Lucanis/Harding
