Ghost of Yotei The Way of the Yari Walkthrough Guide

In this guide, we shall walk you through The Way of the Yari quest in Ghost of Yotei, a quest that rewards you with the Yari.

Ghost of Yotei has a ton of weapons for you to use, but the Yari, found in the Way of the Yari quest, is one of the best weapons for poking enemies at a distance. Apart from its blade, you can also use the wooden grip of the Yari to propel yourself forward and kick enemies with the momentum.

The Yari is an incredibly versatile weapon in Ghost of Yotei, but the training you undergo to acquire it in The Way of the Yari is brutal. If you’re struggling on this quest, this guide is here to walk you through it.

You begin this quest by visiting the Yari Master of Modaiwa Island in Ishikari Plains. When you head to his location, he’ll immediately turn hostile, believing you to be an Oni Raider out to bag his head. This will kick off a duel between you and the Yari Master.

The Yari Master, as his name might suggest, wields a Yari or spear/lance. He uses this weapon to poke at you from a distance, making him a nuisance to deal with. Thankfully, all of his attacks are telegraphed by a glowing blue light. Keep your eyes peeled for his light and parry and counterattack to beat him.

Once you beat him, he’ll realize you’re not one of the Oni. He believes you can put an end to the Oni, but not with your untrained hands. He wishes to train you and expects you to begin at dawn. This kicks off the Way of the Yari quest.

The quest begins at dawn the next day, and the Yari Master wants you to lift the spear. When you do so, he reads your form, judging it to be incredibly poor. You then have to follow him, and he’ll lead you to the pond nearby. He wants you to catch the fish using your spear. But to make it more challenging, he wants you to do it when the fish jump into the air.

Stand in the knee-deep water and watch for movement.  The fish usually stick to an area and keep jumping. Wait for a fish to jump, and press the Square button to attack the fish and catch it in mid-air. While you’re supposed to catch three according to the objective, you can only catch one at this point. Catch the fish to progress.

As the Sensei tauntingly eats the single fish you caught, he’ll identify your wrists to be the problem. To train you, he’ll then take you to the edge of a cliff and ask you to paint what you see. Use your touchpad and follow the outlines on the paper to paint. The lesson the master is trying to teach you is: move your wrists like a painter. Use this newfound knowledge to head back into the water and catch a fish.

The Yari Master will spar will you once again, and you have to use the Typhoon Kick by holding Triangle. Once the training is complete, you’ll have to head back to camp for dinner, but you’ll find Oni Raiders at the camp. Use everything you’ve learned to kill the raiders and finish the quest. The Yari Master will then grant you the Yari as a reward.
