Added in Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3, the Shadow Magic Sorcerer subclass brings an ominous set of abilities to spread terror amidst the darkness of the Sword Coast. A practitioner of magic hailing from the Shadowfell, the Shadow Magic sorcerer can conjure hellhounds and see through the deepest dark. Adding to their shadowy theme, the aptly named Shadow Walk allows the sorcerer to teleport to dark areas instantly. However, the ability has more nuance than it first appears

Shadow Walk is a class action exclusive to the Shadow Magic sorcerer subclass. It allows the caster to teleport to any lightly or heavily obscured area using a bonus action. Additionally, the next spell cast by the sorcerer will utilize Metamagic: Distant Spell without costing a Sorcery Point. This will increase the range of all spells and cantrips by 50% and extend the range of melee spells to 9m (30ft). Here are some key points to know about Shadow Walk:

  • Unlocked at level 11.
  • Costs a bonus action to cast.
  • The teleport target spot must be lightly or heavily obscured.
  • Can be cast while standing in a well-lit area.
  • Teleport range is 18m (60 ft), the same as Misty Step.
  • Applies Distant Spell to the next spell.

How to Use Shadow Walk in Well-Lit Areas

Shadow Walk is a very useful ability from a tactical standpoint, especially in the hands of a Shadow Magic sorcerer. It functions like Misty Step but only costs a bonus action and provides a free Distant Spell. Since the sorcerer can see through all darkness with Eyes of the Dark and can cast Darkness as a 2nd-level spell, a suitable dark area for Shadow Walk is usually available.

Shadow Magic sorcerers can use Darkness like a defensive spell, casting it over themselves or where they plan to be, and Shadow Walk into it. In addition to the magical darkness, the Hound of Ill Omen serves as a buffer between the caster and melee enemies. Shadow Walk can, therefore, serve as a defensive teleport when the sorcerer is out of Darkness. After casting Shadow Walk and repositioning to a more defensible spot, Distant Spell ensures that the sorcerer has enough range to hit any visible opponent on the battlefield.

If there are no suitable obscured spots, the sorcerer can cast Darkness and then use Shadow Walk. Darkness has the same casting range as Shadow Walk, making them a well-synergized combo. The same trick can be used offensively to reposition for an attack while keeping the Shadow Magic sorcerer safely concealed in magical darkness.
