Getting lost in Minecraft is no joke. One second, you’re out exploring; the next, it’s getting dark, and you’re desperately searching for a landmark to guide you home. This is doubly true for the game’s Nether dimension. While compasses, maps, and even the sun can serve as effective navigating tools in the Overworld, none of them work in the Nether. There is no sun, a map is unreliable, and the compass spins randomly. That is, unless you have a Lodestone.

What Is a Lodestone in Minecraft

Lodestone is a block with concentric patterns on it, naturally found in the Nether’s Bastion remnants. If you procure a lodestone and place it near your Nether Portal, using your compass on it will ensure that you won’t get lost in the Nether. The compass will point to the lodestone instead of spinning around, and you can find your way back to the portal. Lodestone has a high chance of spawning in the chests of Bastion remnants, but it can also be crafted.

Ingredients for Crafting a Lodestone in Minecraft

To make a lodestone, you will require 8 chiseled stone bricks and 1 Netherite Ingot. Chiseled stone bricks are simple to make; however, finding a Netherite Ingot can be tricky.

  • Chiseled stone bricks:

Start with regular stone—smelt cobblestone in a furnace to get it. Place four stone blocks in a square shape in the crafting grid to get stone bricks. Place three stone bricks in a row to craft stone brick slabs. Stacking two stone brick slabs on top of each other in the grid will craft chiseled stone bricks. If you have a stonecutter, use it to convert stone directly into chiseled stone bricks.

  • Netherite Ingot:

This is the rare part of the recipe. You can find Netherite Ingots in Bastion remnants or make them using 4 gold ingots and 4 Netherite scraps placed in any order on the crafting table. Get Netherite scraps by smelting ancient debris found across the Nether, most abundantly around Y-level 15.

Once you have everything, place the Netherite Ingot in the center slot of the crafting table. Surround it with the eight chiseled stone bricks. This arrangement gives you one lodestone, ready to place anywhere you would like to set it up as a navigation anchor.

The lodestone’s main use is to anchor a compass to a specific point, even in dimensions where compasses don’t usually work. Right-click the lodestone while holding a compass to make it a lodestone compass. The lodestone compass will glow, similar to an enchanted item, and always point to its anchoring lodestone—even across the Nether and the End. Removing the lodestone from its position will cause the compass to revert to its default behavior.
