If you are an avid collector of various colors for the axolotl, you will need to spend a lot of time and effort just to find the blue variant. Calling this mob rare is an understatement. There is a 1 in 1,200 chance of spawning a Blue axolotl in Minecraft through breeding.
But there is a quicker way to get this rare aquatic mob in the game. You can use console commands to summon a Blue axolotl for both Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition. If you don’t mind cheating just to complete your pet collection, this is the best way to do it.

Use Console Command To Summon Blue Axolotl in Minecraft
Before anything else, you first need to enable cheats for your world upon creating it. However, if you already created your world, you can enable cheats by going to the pause screen and selecting “Open to Lan” turning on commands in the option then sharing your world locally.
The process of summoning a Blue axolotl using a console command depends on the version of Minecraft you are playing:
- Java Edition: input “/summon minecraft:axolotl ~ ~ ~ {Variant:4}”
- Bedrock Edition: input “/summon axolotl ~ ~ ~ minecraft:entity_born”
These commands should spawn the rare aquatic mob into your world. However, make sure to spawn them near bodies of water. They will eventually die within 5 minutes if they are on dry land.
Breed Axolotls Until You Get a Blue Variant in Minecraft
You can breed two axolotls until you get a blue one. However, as mentioned before, it requires luck and patience to finally get your desired color. If you are determined to get a Blue axolotl in Minecraft through breeding, you should know where to find them.
Where To Find Axolotls in Minecraft?
You can find axolotls in underground Lush Caves, usually near clay deposits. These biomes are quite tricky to find, so you will have to keep an eye out for signs in the overworld. If you spot an azalea tree, you can try and dig down under it for a chance at finding this type of cave.
Once you spot an axolotl, use a bucket of water to scoop them out. You need to find two in order to breed them, so make sure you have enough water buckets.
How To Breed Axolotls?
Once you have your axolotls, place them in a water source. Feed them with a bucket of tropical fish, which can be found in warm ocean biomes. Once you feed them, they should start breeding and spawn a baby axolotl with a random color. For Java Edition, axolotls have a five-minute cooldown before they can breed again. In Bedrock Edition, the cooldown is only one minute. Repeat this process until it spawns a blue axolotl.
