Clavicus Vile’s quest in Oblivion Remastered forces you to choose between a Soul Trapping sword or the deity’s Masque.

Clavicus Vile’s quest in Oblivion Remastered centers around the legendary Umbra sword. The weapon is unique as it has the Soul Trap enchantment and deals more damage than a Daedric longsword. In exchange for this cursed blade, the Daedric Prince Clavicus Vile offers you the Masque of Clavicus Vile, a heavy helmet with a +20 Personality enchantment. Whether you’re in it for the loot or the lore, this guide walks you through each step—from locating Clavicus Vile’s shrine to facing Umbra—and explores both outcomes of your fateful choice.
Clavicus Vile Quest Walkthrough — Oblivion Remastered
To begin the quest, talk to Ma’Raska at the Shrine of Clavicus Vile. The shrine is located south of Wawnet Inn, directly southwest of Fort Virtue. You must be at least level 20 to begin the quest, and Ma’Raska will recommend that you make an offering of 500 gold to the shrine. After making the offering, you strike a deal with the Daedric Prince to retrieve the sentient Umbra sword in exchange for the Masque of Clavicus Vile. The sword is located in the Vindasel Ayleid, held by a formidable Bosmer warrior who has named herself after it.
Vindasel Ayleid Location

The Vindasel Ayleid ruin is located southwest of the Imperial City, at the spot marked on the map above. Once inside, avoid the spike trap in the first room and the gas trap further inside. In the final chamber, you will spot Umbra walking around as a neutral NPC, carrying the eponymous sword.
How To Beat Umbra in Oblivion Remastered
Umbra is a challenging opponent to beat, especially at lower levels. In addition to wearing a full set of Ebony armor, she regenerates health. If you aren’t able to beat her in a fair fight, here are some ways to cheese Umbra. Be sure to save your game before trying any of the methods listed below.
Spike Trap
Attack Umbra and run back to the entrance of Vindasel. Loop around the spike trap and stand on its opposite side. As Umbra makes a beeline for you, she will fall directly onto the spikes. You will have to repeat this trick several times to kill her. Using a paralysis spell once she is on the platform, or summoning a creature to occupy her, can make the trick easier. Be sure to collect her sword and armor once she dies.
Out of Reach

From the balcony on the north side of Umbra’s chamber, jump to one of the pillars closest to you. Attack Umbra with a ranged weapon to lure her close. Then use ranged attacks or a long melee weapon to attack her from above without taking any damage. To succeed in this method, your DPS should overpower her regeneration consistently. If it doesn’t, try lowering the difficulty.
Imperial Guards
The final method to defeat Umbra is to get someone else to do it for you. This involves attacking her and kiting her all the way to the Imperial City. If she loses agro en route, you will have to attack her again. Once there, the guards will eliminate her. You will likely be able to loot extra gear from any guards who died during the fight, and find a lot of silver or steel arrows that they shot at Umbra. Since there is a vendor close by, you can easily sell off the extra equipment. Umbra’s armor set is very heavy and will probably exceed the carry capacity of characters without a strength-focused build.
All Clavicus Vile Quest Options and Outcomes

Once you have the sword, there are two possible resolutions to the Clavicus Vile quest.
Offer the Sword
If you turn over Umbra to Clavicus Vile, he will be pleased, as he has unfinished business with the soul inside. As a reward, he will present the Masque of Clavicus Vile, a heavy helmet with a +20 Personality enchantment. While the helmet’s armor rating is on par with a Daedric helmet, its utility pales in comparison to the Umbra Sword’s. However, it can serve as a Daedric artifact for the Blood of the Daedra quest.
Keep the Sword
When you interact with the shrine, choose to keep the sword. Clavicus Vile will be outraged but can’t directly harm you. The biggest downside to this route is that Umbra will cease to be a quest item and will weigh 45 pounds. Additionally, Clavicus Vile’s followers will have a very low disposition toward you and are likely to attack. If you wish to keep the Umbra with zero weight, it is best to keep the quest pending and not interact with the shrine at all. If you already have the sword before initiating the quest, you can complete the mission by talking to Ma’Raska, making an offering, and interacting with the shrine.
