RPG is one of the most popular genres in the gaming industry. Role-playing games provide their players with choices and opportunities; they give the player the ability to build the character in their own way, explore vast open worlds, and choose which quest to do from various questlines.

RPGs can immerse the player like no other genre can. RPGs also tell beautiful stories with engaging characters and memorable questlines. The games in this genre also let the player have choices that affect the story; it gives the player control over their own progression. Some of the best games ever made are RPGs, such as Witcher 3, Mass Effect, Elden Ring, and more.

We have seen a lot of good RPG releases in recent years, such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Lies of P. However, the gaming community is also quite excited to see near-future releases such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows and far-off future releases like Elder Scrolls 6. But in this article, we are going to discuss some of the best RPGs you can try in 2025.

We are starting the list with Game Science’s action RPG Black Myth: Wukong. Fans have been looking forward to the game since the first trailer came out on August 20, 2020. The trailer showed a beautiful world rooted in Chinese mythology; every character in the game, including the bosses, looks like something straight out of a storybook. The game was inspired by the classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West. Black Myth: Wukong was released for PC and PlayStation on August 20, 2024.

Black Myth: Wukong’s gameplay is similar to Souls-like games; however, it is not a part of the Souls-Borne genre. The game is a single-player, third-person action RPG. The players follow a monkey as the protagonist, based on Sun Wukong from the Journey to the West novel. The protagonist has a staff as a weapon, which is based on the magical staff of Sun Wukong. The player can make use of different stances to add versatility to their combat style, the combat mechanics also have a resource management element to them.

The game features six chapters in total, each focusing on a different location from the Chinese mythos. In the game, the players will fight many gods and demons from Chinese mythology while upgrading and enhancing their gear. With a fresh setting and fluid gameplay, Black Myth: Wukong is an RPG everyone should try.

6. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, developed by Warhorse, is an upcoming RPG title, and it is the sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, released on February 13, 2018. This new installment will see the protagonist Henry take on the Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund during a civil war in the early 15th century. This game will reportedly conclude Henry’s story. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is expected to release in 2025, but we do not have a confirmed date as of now.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will reportedly be larger than its predecessor. The first game in the series had a single open world, but this sequel will have two larger open-world areas players can freely explore. One of the areas is going to be The Bohemian Paradise, and another area is going to be a place named Kutná Hora.

The RPG is going to be in first person just like the previous installment, and the player’s actions will affect the NPCs and the story. The developers replaced the previous game’s skills, such as Oratory, Intimidation, and Charisma, with Appearance, Dominate, and Coercion. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 will offer players an in-depth first-person melee combat experience as well as a good story in a detailed open world.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a compilation of three games, which include Mass Effect (2007), Mass Effect 2 (2010), and Mass Effect 3 (2012). The Mass Effect trilogy was developed by BioWare and published by EA. The developers remastered all three games in the Legendary Edition with enhanced visuals, technical improvements, and gameplay adjustments.

Out of the three Mass Effect games, the developers focused more upgrades on the oldest release, improving its graphics, vehicle handling, and loading times. Mass Effect Legendary Edition was released for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on May 14, 2021.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a single-player action RPG where players take control of Commander Shepard, who is an elite human soldier and a customizable character. Commander Shepard must unite the galaxy against an ancient threat, a highly advanced race of synthetic-organic starships known as Reapers. If you are a fan of the RPG and the sci-fi genre, then take part in this space odyssey and save the galaxy from its doom.

Skyrim is considered by fans to be one of the best games in the RPG genre. The game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks is the fifth installment in the Elder Scrolls franchise, following Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Bethesda released Skyrim for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on November 11, 2011.

Bethesda set Skyrim 200 years after the story of the previous title. The players control the protagonist, simply named Dragonborn, in their quest to slay Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is going to destroy the world. The game is an open world with various quests the player can choose from and develop their character’s skills.

Skyrim allows its players to go anywhere in the open world at any time, sometimes even at the cost of postponing the game’s main story. Players in Skyrim can switch between both first and third person. The player is free to roam the world of Skyrim, inspired by Scandinavian landscapes, with numerous caves, dungeons, cities, and towns, to explore.

Elden Ring, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, is an action RPG and the latest release from FromSoftware, also the developer of games like the Dark Souls Trilogy and Sekiro. George R.R. Martin wrote the world-building for this game. It was published worldwide by Bandai Namco Entertainment for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on February 25, 2022.

Elden Ring is a third-person action RPG just like the Dark Souls games. We have seen elements in Elden Ring that are similar to other FromSoftware games. These elements include the unforgiving game design, the notoriously challenging gameplay and boss fights, and an ambiguous story.

FromSoftware set the game in an open world named The Lands Between, where players can freely roam, explore different areas, and face various monsters. The Lands Between offers six main areas, including the starting area named Limgrave. The players must slay their enemies, including monsters and demigods, and collect all the shards of the Elden Ring to become the Elden Lord.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Many consider CD Projekt Red’s Witcher 3 to be one of the best in the genre. The Witcher 3 is the third title in the Witcher franchise. CD Projekt Red released its predecessor, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, back in 2011.

The Witcher games are a continuation of the Witcher novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Development for Witcher 3 began in 2011 and lasted three and a half years. The game was built on the REDengine3. CD Projekt Red released Witcher 3 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox on May 19, 2015.

In this game, we follow Geralt of Rivia, a witcher, a monster hunter for hire. The game is set in a fictional fantasy world filled with monsters and magic, which is inspired by Slavic folklore. Geralt is looking for his adoptive daughter, Ciri, who is being hunted by The Wild Hunt. This search for Ciri takes Geralt to various places, meeting various characters and finding many questlines.

The Witcher 3 shines in its open world, quest design, and characters. The game has a vast open world that feels detailed and fully realized. All the side quests are carefully written with a story of their own, and sometimes those stories even connect to the main storyline. And finally, the characters, all the characters in the game, are beautifully designed, written, and voice-acted, even the monsters. If you like a story that will feel like it was made with the utmost care and a fully realized open world alongside great characters and terrifying monsters, then The Witcher 3 is the game for you.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is an RPG developed and published by Larian Studios. It is the third title in the franchise, and it is based on the tabletop fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons. Larian Studios released a demo version of the game in early access in October 2020 and published the full game in August 2023.

The game is set in the universe of Forgotten Realms. The game begins when the protagonist wakes up and finds themselves on a mind flayer ship. The protagonist then gets infected by a parasite tadpole that is going to transform them into a mind flayer as well. The protagonist then is forced to go on a journey with their companions, who are also infected, to prevent the transformation.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a single-player or multiplayer co-op RPG. The players can create their own characters and find companions throughout the game. The game’s quest system is very unique. The game has three acts, and each act takes place in a different part of the world. It offers players a non-linear quest system, meaning that players can tackle quests in any sequence they wish. The game also has 12 character classes and 46 subclasses. Each of these classes focuses on a different aspect of combat. Baldur’s Gate 3’s vast open world, unique game, and quest design set it apart from other RPGs.

Conclusion

RPG is one of the most popular genres in the gaming industry. Role-playing games provide their players with choices and opportunities; they give the player the ability to build the character in their own way, explore open worlds, and choose which quest to do from various questlines.
