As players progress through the main storyline and reach the wedding in Semine to meet Lord Otto von Bergow, they will face another problem. This time the punishment can be deadly for Hans and it is all up to Henry to save him before the 12 Tolls of the bell. For Whom the Bell Tolls Quest Overview in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2
For Whom the Bell Tolls is the fifth main quest of the main story in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. This quest starts automatically after the events of the Semine Wedding. Henry and Hans find themselves in prison, this time with Hans being sentenced to death by hanging. As Henry, you will have to convince Chamberlain Ulrich that Hans is indeed a nobleman and not a commoner pretending to be a nobleman. The only way to convince him is to get Captain Thomas on his feet.
How to Prepare for Whom the Bell Tolls Quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2?
As you will be a prisoner in Castle Trosky, you will not have anything in your inventory. All of your items will get confiscated and you can only get them at the end of the quest. However, there are some individuals that can help you get some useful items like Lockpicks which can help you open some chests around the Castle.
Moreover, you have to be careful during this quest. You cannot attack any guard nor take any kind of weapon, otherwise, you will get caught.
How to complete For Whom the Bell Tolls Quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2?
The main task of this quest is to get to Captain Thomas and learn about his sickness. After that, you have to prepare a potion for his health so that he can stop Chamberlain from hanging Hans. Getting to Captain Thomas will be a challenge in itself. Moreover, you cannot just go into any room in the castle as a prisoner.
Here are all the main objectives that you must complete for the For Whom the Bell Tolls quest in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
1. Haul the sacks to the charcoal shed
After the initial cutscene inside the prison, you will find Henry speaking to a guard outside the castle gate. The guard will tell you to start working to pay off the debts. You can ask the guard regarding Capon and your items. After the conversation, you will have to carry 3 sacks to the charcoal shed. Pick up the sack from the wagon and go inside the gate. Continue straight on the road and go past the main castle gate to come across a small shed on the right side. Head inside and place the sack on the floor. Now, bring the other sacks as well to continue ahead.
2. Find work at the gallows, Help Kolda with his axe
This objective is optional, but if you are wondering how to find work at the gallows, then you can follow along. Go outside the castle gate and head down along the path to find Kolda near the main entrance. Speak with him and go along with the dialogues to get work. He will tell you to sharpen his axe and bring it to him.
Now, follow the mark on the compass to find a chest in a shack. Open the chest to get the axe. As you come out of the shack, there will be a grindstone on the left side. Use the grindstone to sharpen the axe. Once the axe is sharpened enough, go back to Kolda and give it to him.
3. Talk to the Blacksmith
Now, go back up and in through the castle gate to find the Blacksmith outside the main castle gate. Speak with him and go through the dialogues to get some work from him. He will tell the guards to let you through the main gate.
4. Take care of the horseshoe for the Blacksmith
Go to the courtyard of the castle to find the blacksmithing station. Go to the chest on the right corner to find the recipe for Farmer’s horseshoes and blacksmithing materials. Take all of the items from the chest and open the inventory to read the recipe. After learning the recipe, go to the Anvil and start blacksmithing. Select the Farmer’s horseshoes recipe to start smithing.
First, place the horseshoe on the furnace and blow it to heat it. Once it is golden, pick it up and take it to anvil. Now, hammer the horseshoe on the edges and slowly work your way to the middle. After that, take it back to the furnace to heat it again and then back to anvil. This time flip the horseshoe and hammer it everywhere until it completes.
5. Take the horseshoe to Kabat
After forging the horseshoe, report to the blacksmith. He will tell you to give it to Kabat at the stable. Head down the road to the stable and speak with Kabat. Give him the horseshoe and ask if you can help him in any way. Here, he will mention that he needs back his rosary which he lost to Father Nicodemus in a dice game.
Kabat is one of the traders in the castle and he sells Lockpicks. You need lockpicks to open the chests later in the quest. You can either purchase lockpicks from him or get back his rosary to get 3 lockpicks for free. However, if you are trying to purchase the lockpicks, you will have to steal money around the castle.
6. Find Kabat’s rosary
You can find Father Nicodemus past the main castle gate near the training pit. You can ask about the rosary to Father and he will agree to play the dice game for the rosary but he will ask you to put on some money first. Another way to get the rosary is to pickpocket the father. Just wait until Father goes near the castle wall and then go behind him to loot the rosary. Kabat’s rosary is green so you have to be careful while pickpocketing the Father to get the correct rosary. Otherwise, it can take you a while to pickpocket the Father as he continuously switches places back and forth.
Now, if you want to win the rosary in a dice game, then first you have to get some money. The easiest way to get money is to pickpocket Father. Pickpocketing the Father will get you 50 Groschen, enough for you to put it on the dice game for the rosary.
We did the same and fortunately, as we played the dice game, all dice rolled in our favor, and we defeated the Father on the first try. As the dice game is purely on luck, unless you have your dice which you will not have access to at this point, it might be different for you and take you a couple of tries to beat him in the dice game.
After getting Kabat’s rosary either from pickpocketing the Father or defeating him in the Dice game, return it to Kabat.
7. Get to Thomas
After returning the rosary to Kabat, go to the main courtyard of the castle. Here, you will see a couple of guards on the right side praying for the wellbeing of Thomas. Speak to the guards and inform them about the rosary. Turns out that Kabat’s rosary is not his but Thomas’s. Sharing such information will let the guard escort you to the Chapel. No guard in the castle will get suspicious of you and you can return to the chapel during the quest at any time.
After getting to the Chapel, speak with Adela and ask her about the health of Thomas. She will tell you that he is suffering from a fever and the fever tonicum has run out. Here, you need to say that you are a physician and you can help get a fever tonicum. Adela will tell you that you can find the physician’s journal at the Crone in his chambers.
8. Find out what medicine to give to Captain Thomas
Leave the chapel and go out of the castle to make your way to the Crone. Go up the staircase above the bathhouse to reach the Kitchen. Here, you will find a hungry guard. Speak with him and share a food item with him. If you don’t have any food items, tell him that you can find something for him to eat.
Go back down to the courtyard and go outside the castle gate. Make your way to the guard quarters near the training pit. Go to the top one and you will find a roasted chicken leg in a plate. After picking it up, leave the quarters and go back to the kitchen. Share the food item with the guard and he will move away from the staircase.
Continue up the staircase and keep going up to reach the crone. Once there, enter the room on the left to reach the physician’s chambers. Here, you will meet Katherine, the lady from the pond. Ask her for help and select the “thieves” option to pass the skill check. However, due to low points, you can fail the skill check.
After speaking with Katherine, pick up the physician’s journal from the cabinet on the left corner of the room. Now, read the journal from the inventory to learn that you need to give a fever tonic to Thomas.
9. Get hold of fever tonic
Now, you need to brew a fever tonicum, but first, you need to know the ingredients. To know all the ingredients, open the journal and go to page 4. The first paragraph on the top right lists all the ingredients.
- Boiled wine
- 3x Feverfew
- 2x Ginger
- 1x Elderberry leaves
After knowing the ingredients, you need to gather them from the chest in the room. Use the lockpick on the chest in the room to get 3x feverfew, 2x ginger, and 1x elderberry leaves.
Brewing Fever Tonicum
Now, the only thing left to do is to brew the fever tonic. Interact with the alchemy station in the room to start the alchemy. As you start, make sure to read the recipe book and switch it to a fever tonic. Follow the steps below to brew a fever tonicum.
- Look on the shelf on the left side and select the Wine to pour into the cauldron.
- Interact with the cauldron to lower it to the flames and use the bellows to boil the wine.
- Once you see bubbles on the wine, interact with the cauldron to move it up.
- Now, open the inventory and select the Elderberry leaves, Feverfew, and Ginger.
- Add three handfuls of feverfew to the cauldron.
- Lower the cauldron and boil it for two turns of the sandglass.
- After the two turns, lift up the cauldron.
- Take a handful of Elderberry leaves and put them in the Mortar.
- Take the Pestle and grind the Elderberry leaves.
- Add the ground elderberry leaves to the cauldron.
- Add two handfuls of ginger to the cauldron.
- Now, take the Phial from the shelf on the left and pour the potion into it.
After brewing a fever tonicum, go back to the chapel. As you reach the chapel, a cutscene will begin.
10. Speaking to Lord Otto von Bergow
After the cutscene, Sir Hans will be saved from hanging and you will get to speak with von Bergow. There aren’t any crucial dialogue options here that will earn you or lower your reputation. However, it is best to speak up whenever you see a timer during the conversation.
After the conversation with von Bergow, the For Whom the Bell Tolls quest will conclude.
