The brush is the primary tool for the archaeology mechanic added with the 1.21 Tricky Trials update. Using it on suspicious sand or suspicious gravel can uncover artifacts and a variety of items. It can also be used on armadillos to collect armadillo scutes, which serve as ingredients to craft armor for tamed wolves.

Brush Crafting Ingredients

To craft a brush, collect one copper ingot, a feather, and a stick. You can smelt raw copper obtained from mining common copper ore in a furnace to produce copper ingots. Gather feathers by killing chickens or parrots. You can make a stick by placing two wood planks vertically on a crafting grid. Once you have all the ingredients, head over to the crafting table.

Place the copper ingot in the center of the crafting grid, the feather above it, and the stick below to create one brush. Brushes are fragile and have low durability compared to other tools. You can combine damaged brushes to restore their durability and create a usable brush. It is possible to enhance a brush with Unbreaking and Mending enchantments.

Using the Brush

Armadillos

While holding the brush, right-click (use button) an armadillo to cause it to drop an armadillo scute. An unenchanted brush loses 1/4th (16) of its total durability (64) and can be used multiple times on a single armadillo. Armadillos also shed scute naturally every 5-9 minutes. To lure an armadillo close, you can hold a Spider Eye before using the brush on it. Sprinting causes them to curl into a ball, allowing you to easily use the brush.

Archaeology

Using the brush tool on suspicious sand and gravel can uncover unique items. You can find suspicious sand in desert temples, desert wells, and warm ocean ruins. Suspicious gravel spawns in cold ocean ruins and trail ruins. After finding one of these rare blocks, use the brush on it for a few seconds to see the item it contains. Some of the rarest items you can find with archaeology are:

  • Sniffer Egg
  • Armor Trim Templates
  • Relic Music Disc
  • Emerald
  • Diamond
  • Pottery Shards
    • Place four in a diamond shape within a crafting grid to make a decorated pot.
