Mending is a rare Minecraft enchantment that restores item durability using XP and can only be obtained through exploration and trading.

Enchantments in Minecraft channel your gathered XP into weapons, armor, and tools via an Enchanting Table to enhance them with magical qualities. Unbreaking increases durability, Efficiency increases mining speed, and Smite deals heavy damage to undead mobs.
However, a few enchantments cannot be granted by the Enchanting Table and are classified as treasure enchantments. Mending is one of these treasure enchantments that can only be found by exploring a few locations and taking part in specific activities.
What Is the Mending Enchantment in Minecraft
Mending is a treasure enchantment that replenishes the durability of an item directly by consuming XP orbs collected by the player. It can affect most weapons, armor, and tools. When you collect XP, any item with the Mending enchantment in your main hand, offhand, or armor slots regains durability. The item will not consume XP if it is already at full health or stored in the inventory.
Each point of XP orb consumed will heal the item for two durability points. If the item regains only one point of durability, it doesn’t consume any XP and instead adds it to your XP gauge. For example, if your iron sword with the Mending enchantment is at half durability, 125/250, killing a zombie will grant 5 XP and repair the sword up to 135/250 durability. Mending is not compatible with the Infinity enchantment.
Where To Find Mending Enchantment in Minecraft

Here is a summary of all the methods you can employ to find the Mending enchantment in Minecraft, arranged from most recommended to least:
- Trading with a Librarian Villager of any level.
- Looting Ancient City chests
- Searching Jungle Pyramids.
- Exploring Strongholds.
- Village Raid drops (Bedrock Edition only).
- Fishing in any biome.
How To Apply Mending to an Item

To apply Mending to any item, you need to find an enchanted book with Mending. These have the highest spawn rates in Ancient City chests. However, a more reliable method of getting them is to trade with Librarian villagers. You can turn unemployed villagers into Librarians by placing a Lectern close to them.
Librarians at every level, from Novice to Expert, trade enchanted books. If you haven’t made any trades yet, you can also break and replace the Lectern to reset their offers immediately. Once you have an enchanted book with Mending, place it with an item on an anvil to transfer its Mending enchantment over to the item.
