Learn how to free Shadowheart, the elven cleric trapped in a pod on board the Mind Flayer ship in Baldur’s Gate 3’s prologue.

Baldur’s Gate 3 starts off with a bang and hellfire as you awaken on a Mind Flayer Nautiloid ship under attack by demons. The first companion you encounter is Lae’zel, who decides that your odds of escaping the ship together are much higher. Soon, the two of you come across Shadowheart, a cleric trapped inside a pod. She implores you to free her and triggers the ‘Rescue the Illithids’ Captives’ quest.
How To Save Shadowheart in Baldur’s Gate 3 Prologue?

To open the Mind Flayer pod, you must find an eldritch rune and use it on the console to her right. Continue heading forward to the east, past the console. Open the sphincter ahead to enter a room with two dead thralls and another mind flayer pod at its center. The dead thrall at the entrance has a gold key, which you can use to open the chest in the previous room. Ascend the steps at the far end of the room and loot the dead thrall there. Pick up the eldritch Rune, and you are ready to free Shadowheart.

Don’t forget to loot the chest and Slave Mind brain jar adjacent to the thrall’s corpse. Keep each type of green brain jar you find, as it can be used later in the game. Head back to the previous room and interact with the console beside Shadowheart’s pod.
Choose the first option: “There’s a socket in the console, shaped like the rune you found.” Then, pick the first option again, which says, “Place your hand on the console.” Finally, choose the Illithid and Wisdom check option to will the pod open. After passing an easy check, the pod will open, and Shadowheart will join your party. Other methods to open the pod include passing a strength check as a barbarian or an Arcana check as a wizard, warlock, or sorcerer.
What Will Happen if You Don’t Free Shadowheart?

If you aren’t able or choose not to free Shadowheart, she will still manage to make her way off the ship and meet you later during Act 1. Freeing Shadowheart on the ship adds her to your party much sooner, giving you access to her cleric abilities and healing spells.
Additionally, she will have a higher approval rating for helping her in a time of crisis, even when Lae’zel advises you against it. She’s also tied to one of the central narrative arcs, so having her in the party is a must to experience the game’s story with all its elements intact.
