In the very first section of Episode 1 in Death Stranding 2, you will encounter your first in-game gate quakes. Similar to real-life earthquakes, the unique name of the natural phenomenon will surely pique your interest. After all, the strange and unique world of the Death Stranding universe has plenty of phenomena that are borne of otherworldly sources. Gate quakes are one such example.
Death Stranding 2: What Are Gate Quakes?
The corpus describes gate quakes in DS2 as earthquake-like phenomena, with their magnitude being measured in G-scale. It claims the natural event occurs when “matter passes through the plate gate.” But “unlike ordinary earthquakes, the strength of the shaking does not always correspond to the distance from the epicenter-which could be considered the plate gate itself.” A seemingly random location instead can have the strongest shaking. Furthermore, extreme cases of gate quakes can have localized shaking that only affects a 100-meter radius.

The corpus continues and notes that the gate quakes’ seismic waves are influenced by tar currents and can also create “abnormal reverberations” within the latter. It mentions that this can be the reason why “strong quakes have occasionally been observed in areas that are very distant from the plate gate.”
Given that the scientists believed that matter passing through the plate gate causes these gate quakes, they expected that controlling and regulating the plate gate would allow them to reduce quakes. Extending the chiral network across Mexico and Australia allows for that. What they found instead is that gate quakes continued to happen regularly without any abatement. Without an explanation, there’s a theory doing the rounds that suggests gate quakes are “the tremors of BTs and the dead passing through undiscovered gates on the Beach and the world beyond.”
As the scientists in the in-game lore explore further, we may or may not end up having clear-cut answers as to why the strange phenomena of gate quakes happen in Death Stranding 2. As we explore the game further and 100% it, we are hoping to learn that there is more in-game explanation. If we find any, we will be quick to update this article.
What To Do During Gate Quakes In DS2?
The best thing to do if you find yourself in an area being impacted by a gate quake, especially a really strong one, is to hold L2 and R2 and just stay put at a place until it subsides. A gate quake can knock you off balance.
