The concepts of Ha and Ka will time and again come up in Death Stranding 2. It’s something Kojima already employed in the first title to explain what was happening in the world once the Death Stranding phenomenon took place and BTs arrived. The concept finds its roots in Ancient Egypt. It is quite an interesting way of looking at what’s going on in the in-game universe.

Once Death Stranding took place, death in the in-game world was seen as the separation of a person’s Ha (the body) from their Ka (soul).

While discussing the concept, the corpus goes on to say that this understanding of life and death is rooted in what was believed in Ancient Egypt—“that even as the body wasted away, the soul lived on forever.” The corpus further mentions that the Egyptians performed mummification in “the hope of allowing the dead to live on in the next world.”

How Do Ha and Ka Play Into the Death Stranding?

Now that you have grasped the basics of the concept, apply it to the world affected by the Death Stranding. If a body whose soul is gone isn’t properly disposed of through incineration, the departed soul can try and find its way back. If it does, it will take the form of a Beached Thing (BT).

Why Does the Ka Return to the Ha and Become BT?

The corpus mentions that this happens because of the “Death Stranding altering the balance between the worlds of the living and the dead and unbalancing our relationship with the Beach.”

This is why corpse disposal in Death Stranding 2 is a must if you inadvertently end up killing a human enemy while tackling them. A potential BT creation and a possible future voidout chance mean you need to dispose of the dead body properly as soon as possible. To be on the safer side, you should make use of weapons like the Tranq Sniper Rifle and SL Tranq Handgun.

Given that Sam is a repatriate, his Ka is able to return to his Ha quickly if he dies. If you die in-game, you will find yourself submerged, where you will have to press the prompted button to repatriate and resurrect.
