Discover whether Elder Scrolls Online has crossplay and cross-save support, and how the developers plan to update the multiplayer experience.

Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) is an MMO that transports players to Tamriel 1,000 years in the past before the events of Skyrim. The game was first released on PC in 2014, with a console version for PlayStation and Xbox arriving the following year. As such, its online community comprises players from all three platforms, but they play on separate servers.
ESO does not have cross-platform functionality, with each platform having its own regional servers. The servers are divided into PC/Mac, Xbox, and PlayStation. While different generations of consoles can play together within the same server, PC, Xbox, and PlayStation players have no way of playing together. Crossplay has been one of the most demanded features for ESO since its launch, and after a decade, we finally have some good news on that front.

Will Elder Scrolls Online Have Crossplay in the Future?

According to a May 2025 podcast on the official Bethesda Softworks YouTube channel, ESO’s development team has started working on cross-play for the game. Game director Rich Lambert and Zenimax studio director Matt Firor revealed the update.
The development team has started looking into ways the MMO could support crossplay. The major challenge for implementing crossplay is the work that needs to be done on the underlying technology for The Elder Scrolls Online to support it. According to Zenimax, Microsoft’s multiplatform approach helps make cross-platform play a reality.
Other challenges will emerge when considering PvP balancing, with PC players having an edge in combat. Additionally, developers will also have to consider merging the economies of different servers, along with addressing desynchronization issues. While the game may merge the separate servers of PC, Xbox, and PlayStation players into one, it will still divide them by region, just like the current setup with EU and North American servers. This regional division helps reduce latency as a player’s physical distance from a server increases.

Does Elder Scrolls Online Have Cross-Save?
ESO does not support cross-saving. This means that if you play on a platform like Xbox or PlayStation and want to switch to PC, your progress will not be transferred. Instead, you will have to start a new profile after migrating to a new platform and its server. When crossplay is implemented and the different platforms’ servers merge, cross-save should be the next feature to be supported.
