The game is set in an alternate timeline where its savior, Paul Atreides, was never born. You start as a nameless survivor and grind the ranks to become an agent of Atreides or the Harkonnen.
You play in an open world of Arrakis shared with hundreds of other survivors trying to make it big. As the game will initially be exclusive to the PC platform, it raises the question of whether it’ll be playable with a controller. Let us discuss whether Dune: Awakening will have controller support and what the compatible controllers are.
Controller Compatibility Explained for Dune: Awakening
The Dune Awakening game page on Steam lists that the game will have “Partial Controller Support”. And the compatible controllers listed are Xbox controllers. What does this mean for players? The compatibility listed as “ Partial Controller Support” means that while controllers might be supported for gameplay, you will require a mouse and keyboard for navigation through game menus.
This means you will need a mouse and keyboard to start up the game on a PC. This also applies to handhelds like the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally, but we’ll have to wait and see. Rest assured that the gameplay will be playable with a controller as the Steam page suggests.
When it comes to compatible controllers, the page suggests Xbox controllers. This basically means any controller with Xinput and DirectInput features will work. Xinput and DirectInput are Microsoft APIs that allow user input from devices such as official/unofficial Xbox game controllers, keyboard, and mouse devices.
So there you have it—Funcom’s Dune Awakening will be partially compatible with controllers with Xinput features, along with a keyboard-mouse combo for in-game menus. Here’s a fun tip: you can also use PlayStation controllers for the game if you download a program called DS4 Windows. You can use controllers such as Dualshock 3, Dualshock 4, and Dualsense with DS4 Windows. Another fun fact: You can also use Nintendo Switch Joycons with DS4 Windows.
