Roaring Moon ex Deck Guide for Pokemon TCG
In Pokemon TCG, the Roaring Moon ex Deck is based on the Roaring Moon ex Pokemon card, which has an automatic knockout with the ability Frenized Gouging, though it does 200 damage to yourself. For only 3 energy, this is extraordinarily powerful and matches up with current meta Pokemon decks. In this Pokemon TCG: Roaring Moon ex Deck Guide, we explain the new Paradox Rift flagship card deck shaking up the meta. We will go through a Roaring Moon Ex decklist, a guide on how to play it, and the crucial cards. Let’s first show you the deck list so you understand the premise behind the Pokemon TCG: Roaring Moon ex Deck Guide.
This deck has been updated post-Paradox Rift. We now suggest using Morpeko and Ancient Booster Energy Capsule. The below changes are reflected in the deck list and this guide.

Key Cards in Roaring Moon Ex
While Roaring Moon Ex is the centerpiece of the deck, there will be a lot required to accelerate energy, keep your end full, and the prize cards rolling in. So, here are the most important cards in the new Paradox Rift deck and how to use them.
Below are the most essential key cards in the Roaring Moon Ex Deck:
- Earthen Vessel: energy retrieval
- Roaring Moon Ex: damage Pokemon
- Dark Patch: energy acceleration on bench
- Professor Sada’s: energy acceleration and drawing
- Suawkabilly Ex: energy acceleration
Roaring Moon Ex
Roaring Moon Ex Features in Pokemon TCG:
- Pokémon: Ex
- HP: 230
- Frenzied Gouging: Knock Out your opponent’s Active Pokémon. If your opponent’s Active Pokémon is Knocked Out in this way, this Pokémon does 200 damage to itself.
- Calamity Storm: 100 damage + You may discard a Stadium in play. If you do, this attack does 120 more damage.
- Pokémon ex rule: When your Pokémon ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
- Weakness ×2 grass
- Resistance: None
- Retreat Cost: 2 basic energy
- Set: Paradox Rift124/182 Double Rare
The main benefit of Roaring Moon Ex is its consistent and powerful damage output via Calamity Storm or Frenzied Gouging. With Frenzied Gouging, you can automatically knock out a Pokémon with only three energies, but you’ll also take 200 damage yourself. So, if you don’t play this right, you’ll trade prize cards.
Your main goal is to discard energy from your hand to accelerate energy with cards like Professor Sada’s Vitality and Dark Patch. The Pokéstop Stadium card also serves two purposes in this deck. First, it can discard energy for you, helping you accelerate energy. Second, it can give you much-needed item cards that aid in your acceleration.
You can also use Galarian Moltres to attach energy to Roaring Moon Ex and then swap with Energy Switch. Additionally, Squawkability can discard your entire hand, freeing up many options for accelerating energy. Typically, keep Squawkability on your bench and swap with Switch Cart when you’re ready to take out your opponent’s highest health or most prized card Pokémon.
Earthen Vessel
Earthen Vessel Features in Pokemon TCG:
- Trainer – Item
- You can use this card only if you discard another card from your hand. Search your deck for up to 2 Basic Energy cards, reveal them, and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.
- Set: Paradox Rift124/182 Double Rare
Use an Earthen Vessel to retrieve energy from your deck. Discard one card and search for two basic energies. This is useful if you already have energy in your hand and want to feed other accelerators like Professor Sada’s. You can also combine more energy with more drawing power via Radiant Greninja.
Once you have energy in your hand, use it wisely by attaching it to your Pokémon and understanding your discard principles. Do you have something that can accelerate energy? Are you using Galarian Moltres, who can immediately attach energy? These are powerful ways to get your Pokémon powered up quickly.
Professor Sada’s Vitality
Professor Sada’s Vitality Features in Pokemon TCG:
- Trainer: Supporter
- Choose up to 2 of your Ancient Pokémon and attach a Basic Energy card from your discard pile to each of them. If you attached any Energy in this way, draw 3 cards.
- Set: Paradox Rift170/182 Uncommon
Next, Professor Sada’s Vitality is the cornerstone of the Ancient Roaring Moon Ex deck. It lets you attach basic energy from your discard pile and draw three cards. It’s important to note that you can only attach one energy to each Ancient Pokémon, but you can attach two energies to two different sources.
You can use this card to attach energy to active or bench Ancient Pokémon. This is helpful if Roaring Moon Ex is in the active spot and doesn’t have access to Dark Patch. This is a good reason to go second on turn one because this support is so vital to energy acceleration and card draw.
Squawkabilly Ex
Squawkabilly Ex Features in Pokemon TCG:
- Pokémon: Ex
- HP: 160
- Squawk and Seize: Once during your first turn, you may discard your hand and draw 6 cards. You can’t use more than 1 Squawk and Seize Ability during your turn.
- Motivate: Attach up to 2 Basic Energy cards from your discard pile to 1 of your Benched Pokémon.
- Pokémon ex rule: When your Pokémon ex is Knocked Out, your opponent takes 2 Prize cards.
- Weakness ×2 electric
- Resistance: -30 fighting
- Retreat Cost: 1 basic energy
- Set: Paldea Evolved169/193 Double Rare
Despite its initial appearance as an unusual card in the deck, Squawkabilly actively contributes to drawing cards and accelerating energy. Its key abilities, Squawk and Seize, become essential tactics, enabling players to discard their hand on the first turn and draw 6 cards.
This strategy proves exceptionally effective when Squawkabilly occupies the active spot, empowering players to attach two basic energy cards from their discard pile to a bench Pokemon in the subsequent turn. Its low retreat cost of one allows for swift maneuvers, enabling players to strategically position Squawkabilly on the backline for protection after powering up Roaring Moon Ex.
Dark Patch
Dark Patch Features in Pokemon TCG:
- Trainer: Item
- Attach a basic Darkness Energy card from your discard pile to 1 of your Benched Darkness Pokémon.
- Set: Astral Radiance139/189 Uncommon
To enable fast energy acceleration, use Dark Patch to attach basic Darkness energy to a Darkness Pokémon on your bench. This item card can be used multiple times per turn, assuming you have more than one. You can also use the Pokéstop Stadium card to feed Dark Patches into your hand for that much-needed last energy on Roaring Moon Ex.
The downside of Dark Patch is that it must be used on a bench Pokémon. If Roaring Moon Ex is in the active spot, you can retreat it, use Switch Cart, or power up Galarian Moltres V instead. With Dark Patch and other cards, you will have multiple ways of powering up Roaring Moon Ex to three energy very quickly, if not by turn 2.
How to Play Roaring Moon Ex
Your main goal is to bench Roaring Moon Ex and accelerate energy to it. Ideally, you should have three Darkness energy attached to it in the active spot by turn two. From there, you can either discard a Stadium to amplify damage or simply hit for 100 damage repeatedly. If you face a powerful opponent Pokémon, you can risk taking 200 self-inflicted damage to generate an immediate knockout.
To accelerate energy, you need to put Darkness energy in your discard pile. Then, you can play cards that bypass the one attached energy per turn standard. Find energy with Earthen Vessel, then use Dark Patch and Professor Sada’s Vitality to attach it to Roaring Moon Ex. You can discard cards with Ultra Ball, Pokéstop, Earthen Vessel, and more.
To draw cards, you want to find Radiant Greninja as quickly as possible. This will allow you to maintain a constant influx of cards by discarding energy. You can also power up Galarian Moltres V using its Direflame Wings ability, which lets you attach energy from your discard pile once per turn. With this strategy, you can easily retreat a wounded Roaring Moon Ex and have a fully powered Galarian Moltres finish the damage.
We selected Manaphy, Mew Ex, and Morpeko for their abilities. These Pokémon all have powerful abilities to prevent bench damage or get you much-needed cards. Your main source of damage will be Roaring Moon Ex, with Galarian Moltres V as a powerful backup.
Sample Hand
You want to get a combination of cards that enhance drawing, discard, and allow energy acceleration. Below is a sample hand and explanation of Roaring Moon Ex gameplay mechanics in Pokemon TCG:
- 1 Roaring Moon Ex
- 1 Ultra Ball
- 1 Darkness Energy
- 1 Nest Ball
- 1 Professor’s Research
- 1 Mew Ex
- 1 Earthen Vessel
On turn one, you want to put in Mew Ex or another Pokemon besides Roaring Moon Ex. This will help use the Dark Patch item if it comes up in your hand. With one darkness energy, discard it via Earthen Vessel to get at least one in your discard pile. From here, you should have two in your hand. Attach one energy to Roaring Moon Ex.
From here, you can use Ultra Ball or Nest Ball to get your preferred Pokemon. Consider on hand, Ultra Ball, and discarding another energy alongside Professor’s Research (if you went first) would net us Radiant Greninja. With a near-empty hand, you can use Mew Ex to draw until you have three. If you come across another energy feed the discard pile with Radiant Greninja. What you’re looking for here is ways to accelerate Roaring Moon Ex like Dark Patch and Professor Sada’s Vitality.
On this turn or next, the odds should allow you to draw at least one acceleration, putting three on Roaring Moon Ex and powering it up for damage. From this stage, you go into maintenance mode. You want to build up your bench Pokemon and get an alternate Roaring Moon Ex, alongside Jirachi to prevent bench damage. Now continue to feed energy and go for knockouts with Roaring Moon Ex and use the Frenized Goughing attack sparingly. With time and practice, you will dominate using the Pokemon TCG: Roaring Moon ex Deck Guide!
