Amulet of Elemental Torment

In Baldur’s Gate 3, The Amulet of Elemental Torment is a jewelry item that requires you to use the environment to deal bonus damage. When the character wearing this item stands on certain surfaces like fire and deals damage to someone, the target they’re attacking also feels the effects of that surface. In this case, they would also take damage from the fire. It’s like the environmental damage is reflected back onto the target. It’s use is very situational and will work on specific builds.

You can equip it to your character’s neck slot in the inventory, providing additional bonuses and buffs. There are no requirements for this item. You can equip it on any class, companion, or character.

In Act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3, Raphael makes you a tempting offer: he’ll give you the Orphic Hammer, but only if you agree to hand over the Crown of Karsus after defeating the Elder Brain. If you reject his deal but still want the Hammer, you’ll need to find your own way into the Hells to claim it.

Your journey begins at the Devil’s Fee, where you’ll need to speak with Helsik. There are a few ways to get her help. The most straightforward is to pay her to open a portal to Avernus. She asks for a steep 20,000 gold, though with some persuasion, you can reduce the cost to 10,000 gold. Another option is to promise to give her the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength instead.

Alternatively, the more daring route is to pickpocket the ritual instructions from Helsik, then head upstairs to perform the portal ritual yourself.

Complete Ritual to Open Portal

With the instructions and the items, head upstairs to Helsik’s private rooms to find the ritual circle on the floor. Place the items carefully to open the portal to the House of Hope:

  1. Infernal Marble: In the center
  2. Skull: Place it on the star point, looking like a triangle pointing directly to the desk
  3. Coin of Mammon: Put in on the next star point
  4. Skip next spot
  5. Diamond: Place it on the third spot
  6. Incense: Put it on the following star point, next to the door to the balcony.
  7. The last two spots should be empty.

Next, after stepping through the portal you will meet Hope. She is trapped here and asks for your help escaping. Agree to save her, but first explore the House of Hope so you can loot the many valuable items here. Leave the Archives for last because taking the Orphic Hammer will sound the alarms.

Break Hope Out of Prison

After stealing the Orphic Hammer, exit the Archives and follow the passage straight ahead. Head past the dining table and continue all the way east. Be prepared for a fight. Raphael’s minions will try to block your path at every turn. Your destination is Hope’s Prison, which you’ll find through a hatch tucked into an alcove near the chamber filled with portals to other realms.

Before entering, make sure to equip your strongest Strength-based character with the Hammer. If your avatar isn’t up to the task, Lae’zel is a top choice for wielding it effectively.

Rescue Hope

Inside Hope’s cell, you’ll find her magically bound to a central platform, flanked by two large glowing stones positioned on raised platforms to either side. These stones are your targets and only the Orphic Hammer can destroy them and break her bindings. Misty Step is a useful spell here, but any character with decent Strength can also reach the platforms by jumping.

You’ll encounter a few enemies in the cell as well, but if you managed to fight your way down the earlier passage, they shouldn’t pose much more of a threat.

Finally, once Hope is free head back to the portal to leave. Rapheal and his minions will arrive to stop you and there will be a serious fight. During this conflict, if Hope dies you can loot the Amulet of Elemental Torment from her body. However, keeping Hope alive will grant you the Gloves of Soul Catching, a much better gear item.

How to Use the Amulet of Elemental Torment in BG3?

Unfortunately, the ‘best’ way to use the Amulet of Elemental Torment in BG3 is to not use it at all. It comes much too late in the game to be part of an effective build. Additionally, the elemental damage types have a limitation where only certain types of elemental surfaces will add the extra damage. This does not include ice surfaces or electrified surfaces.
