How to Get Amulet of the Devout in BG3? Explained

Baldur's Gate 3 Storm Shore Tabernacle Vicar Humbletoes

To get the Amulet of the Devout in Baldur’s Gate 3 you need to visit the Stormshore Tabernacle in Act 3 and find your way into the basement. You can find the Tabernacle in the city, on the east side of the map very close to the Basilisk Gate waypoint. Inside you will find Vicar Humbletoes, who acts as a vendor and sells the Reviving Hands and the Mantle of the Holy Warrior, among other items.

In order to make these process as easy as possible, it’s best to have a character with the Sleight of Hand skill and another with the Remove Curse spell (or scroll). Astarion as Rogue and Shadowheart as a Cleric are good options for this. You’ll also need either a character with the Fog or Darkness spell or corresponding scrolls/arrows.

What you’re really looking for inside the Tabernacle is going to be an Ornate Wooden Hatch. You can find it hidden in a corner, just around to the left of the main entrance. Unfortunately, it is in full view of Vicar Humbletoes and even if you split your party to try and speak him while another picks the hatch lock, he will catch you in the act. This is where you use either Fog or Darkness. Cast it right over the area around the hatch. Now you can crouch and pick the lock and drop inside without being stopped.

In the Tabernacle Basement

Once in the basement you’ll want to split your party up so only the Sleight of Hand character is separate. There are several traps and triggers you’ll want to disarm. It’s possible for a single party member to move around or jump over the traps, so long as your Perception checks are successful, but it’s easier to just disarm them.

You’ll find the Offering Chest down the short hallway and at the back. It’s not trapped or locked, but whoever takes the Amulet of the Devout from the chest will fall victim to the Castigated By Divinity condition. This condition causes the party member to be cursed by angry gods. When the target falls unconscious, they immediately die. Moreover, when they die, a terrible envoy of the offended deity is conjured from the entity’s corpse.

Baldur's Gate 3 Castigated by Divinity and Celestial fight

You can get around this (sort of) by using the Remove Curse spell. This will remove the curse but still trigger the ‘terrible envoy of the offended deity.’ It immediately spawned a Level 10 Celestial with high HP and resistance to Slashing, Piercing, Bludgeoning, and Radiant damage. It’s a four against one fight, however, and if your party is a sufficiently high level it shouldn’t be too much trouble. Necrotic damage works nicely here, along with Flame Strike and Call Lightning spells, if you have them.

Once defeated, return up the ladder. Vicar Humbletoes will automatically chastise you for stealing, but lets you walk away and the Amulet of the Devout should still be in your inventory. Additionally, he goes right back to being willing to trade and talk after, so it doesn’t seem like there is any risk to losing him as a vendor.

How to Use the Amulet of the Devout in BG3?

The best way to use the Amulet of the Devout in Baldur’s Gate 3 is by equipping it to a character with a Cleric build or a companion such as Shadowheart. This is because Clerics can benefit from both of the passives on this accessory. Specifically, the Godswill bonus grants a Cleric and extra Channel Divinity charge.

With Channel Divinity you gain the ability to channel divine energy, starting with two effects: Turn Undead and an effect determined by your Domain. As a Cleric levels, they get one Channel Divinity charge at Level 2 and an additional charge at Level 6. Given that most players entering Act 3 will be well past Level 6, this means that any Cleric equipping this item will have a total of three Channel Divinity Charges per Long Rest.
