Players can’t get the Totem of Defiance easily in Avowed. Follow this guide to ease up your grind and get those buffs.
Envoy is required to restore the Schemer’s Offerings as part of the side mission “Totem of Defiance” in Avowed. Be warned, though, it’s not an easy job at all. Players will have to visit many locations in the Emerald Stair region to piece together this totem and reap the buffs it has to offer. You will have to get six more items other than the Schemer’s Offering itself. These are as follows:
- Schemer’s Offering
- Idol of Covert Plots
- Idol of Violent Rebellion
- Obsidian Prayer Beads
- Sacrificial Dagger
- Idol of Secret Hatred
- Effigy Necklace
It is after finding all of these items that players can finally complete the ritual of restoring Schemer’s Offering. Kindly note that not all of the items on the list must be obtained in the mentioned order, but that’s how we will be exploring them in this guide. Additionally, some locations will only be accessible once you have progressed far enough into the story.
But what do you get after completing this ritual? If you were adamant about restoring the Totem of Defiance, Avowed will reward you with Furious Frenzy, The Slave’s Patience, Hidden Hatred, Kill the Master, Bitter Thoughts, and A Vengeful Victim, which are additional ability buffs for you and your party.

Putting Together the Totem of Defiance in Avowed
Schemer’s Offering
Just like we said, there is no particular order to these totem fragments. However, we suggest that you start at the totem base, which is located at the Shrine to Skaen. You can begin your climb from the side of the shrine. Hop onto the stone platform, and then keep parkouring your way up. The path is pretty straightforward, and you won’t need to think much on your way up. There is also a health potion and a letter midway. But don’t worry, there are no threats that you need to be concerned about. Make your way to the top and simply collect the totem base.
Idol of Covert Plots
This one is pretty simple. All you need to do is visit the Infested Camp near the Grim Wetlands area. Now, make your way to the location marked on the map. You will find that this is one of the only few buildings in this location, and that too, pretty damaged. It looks like a church with the main door locked. Make your way to the cliff connecting to this building, and you can simply spot a wooden bridge leading to the hole in the roof of this building. Descend safely and interact with the Idol of Covert Plots to pick it up.
Idol of Violent Rebellion
This time around, your adventures will take you to the Ranger Headquarters tower. It is located east of Fior mes Iverno. Not completely on top, but the Idol of Violent Rebellion is placed pretty high up on the tower. To get to it, come to the wooden platform built adjacent to it and jump up on the crates shown in the picture above. Now, look at the tower, and you will find a ledge to sprint up to and grab. Do it.
Then keep following the path already set up here (probably by the rangers). Your parkouring session will eventually lead you to a bunch of small crates on a platform where you can pick up the Idol of Violent Rebellion.

Obsidian Prayer Beads
Go to the west of Delemgan Glade Beacon across the large bridge for your Obsidian Prayer Beads. There will be a big fight in the arena as part of the main story. I am not sure if you can get to this location before progressing up to that mission. Opposite the arena, find this archway (shown in the picture above). There will be a small crevice on the left when you walk past it.
Squeeze through, turn left, and go under the broken tree trunk. Immediately after, take a U-turn so you can climb up the tree trunk. Turn left after getting to the upper platform and then turn left again at the first chance you get to reach one more isolated platform where you will find your Obsidian Prayer Beads.
Sacrificial Dagger
All you need to do is visit the Abandoned Farms for this item. This location is north of the Rolling Crags. Outside one of the barns, you will find a note stuck to a wall with the Sacrificial Dagger holding it together. You can go ahead and grab it. That’s it. There is no exaggerated parkour or any combat experience required. However, there could be a few enemies in the area that you need to be aware of.
Idol of Secret Hatred
This one is located in the Ancient Grotto. You will find that it’s pretty close to the Overgrown Homestead. In fact, it lies in the middle of Naku Tedek Grounds and the Overgrown Homestead, marked by a stone dungeon door icon. Once you are in, turn left, go down the stairs, and cross the hazardous-looking water by jumping on the rock first and then onto the platform ahead. Stay on the path while looking to your left, and you will find a room lit by a bluish torch. Crouch and enter the hole in the wall, and it will lead you to the next totem part.
Effigy Necklace
Players can’t find this item until they have unlocked the mission Ancient Soil. This quest will take you to the Naku Tedek Grounds and let you access a secret door as part of the main story. When you are finally inside, interact with the generator to play a cutscene. Go left, and you will be able to access a door. It will be locked. Simply interact with the switch nearby using a lightning attack to open it. There will be water inside, blocking your path. Freeze it using ice grenades and grab the ledge far ahead.
Simply visit a Party Camp and place the totem in its designated place. Now, complete the ritual by placing all the items by interacting with the offering you placed down.
