In Zelda, Cold and Freezing Temperatures can be brutal to survive, so we have a few pieces of advice for Tears of the Kingdom explorers.
In the legend of Zelda, players meet many obstacles, and the environment and climate are one of them. In this guide, we talk about Cold weather, how to survive in freezing temperatures and deal with it in several ways.
Protection against Cold and Freezing Temperatures in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
Players can use various buffs acquired from clothing, food elixirs or even nearby fire to prevent damage from Cold in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. If Link stays too long in freezing temperatures, he will eventually take cold damage and lose his health (hearts). Restoring health with food is extremely resource-consuming, so cold protection is essential in Zelda.
In Tears of the Kingdom, you will encounter your first cold and snow area early on during “the Closed Door” Main Quest. Link must find and solve puzzles inside the Gutanbac Shrine to open the Temple of Time. Also, it will unlock fast travel. If you don’t come well-equipped before heading to the third Sky Islands shrine, you’ll have a terrible time dying continuously.
How to Survive Freezing Temperatures and How to Protect Link from Cold?
There are three main methods that you can use to protect yourself from cold in Zelda, Fire, Clothing and Food. Here are all three ways starting from the easiest to obtain early on in the game:
- Fire source – For example:
- Campfire
- Zonai Flame Emitter
- Food that gives you Cod Resistance
- Warm Clothing with Cold resistance and protection
Fire Sources and How to Make a Campfire
Making a Campfire or any other source of fire won’t protect you during long walks. However, it should give you enough time to survive until you cook food or find warm clothing. To make a Campfire, you need wood which you can obtain by cutting any tree and flint, obtainable from sparking rocks, usually common in caves and dungeons. Lastly, you’ll need a weapon made of metal or stone.
Enter your inventory and make Link hold both: wood and find. Then place it where you want to start a campfire and hit it with your weapon. Also, Zonai Flame Emitter shoots fire and can be used as a weapon against monsters and a way to start a fire. Not the safest method, but in survival, all is permitted.
Campfire will not replenish your hearts, and you can’t move it, so it’s inefficient and more of a last-resort method. Regardless making a campfire can aid you in cooking, which is another much better way to stay warm during freezing temperatures in Zelda.
Food Recipes that Give Cold Resistance
Warming food is probably the best method to deal with freezing temperatures early in the game. Cold Resistance food requires Spicy Peppers, which is even better if you have additional ingredients to create an even more powerful dish. Spacy Peppers can be found on bushes, even in cold regions where the first Gutanbac Shrine is located. When cooking warming food for Link, after eating it, he will have a few minutes of cold resistance and won’t take any damage.
To cook a cold Resistance recipe in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you must find a place to cook first. It can be any cooking pot usually found around ruins. Also, you may already have found a Zonai Portable Pot, which can also be used as a cooking pot, but only one recipe. When you have all components and a place to cook, enter the inventory, make Link hold the ingredients and throw them into the cooking pot. After a short animation, you will be rewarded with new dishes.

Warm Clothing that Protects Link from Cold and Losing Health
Warm clothing is the best way to ensure Link won’t lose health while exploring cold areas in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. However, it’s not easy to find. The first piece of warm clothing is near the mentioned Gutanbac Shrine. You will easily spot a large stump just after you reach the top of the mountain from the shrine. Use the Ascent Ability to reach it. Underneath, you’ll find a chest with cold-resistant Archaic Warm Greaves trousers.
More fancy clothing is available to purchase in Rito Village later in the game. It’s a three-piece set, called a Snowquill Armor, costs 2150 rupees in total and will permanently give Link Cold resistance.
