Temporary Hit Points in Baldur's Gate 3

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the mechanics of combat are as intricate as the story itself, offering players a deep and strategic experience. One such mechanic that often raises questions is Temporary Hit Points. These temporary buffers provide a crucial advantage during battles. Understanding how they function and how to make the most of them can be tricky for both new and experienced players. In this article, we’ll explore the ins and outs of Temporary Hit Points in Baldur’s Gate 3, breaking down how they work, when to use them, and how they can shift the tide of battle in your favour.

How Do Temporary Hit Points Work in Baldur’s Gate 3?

In Baldur’s Gate 3, Temporary Hit Points are additional HP that get added to your base pool and are lost first if you take damage. Moreover, as the name implies, they only last until you take damage and lose them.

For example, you will receive 10 HP using the Shield of Thralls Illithid ability. These hit points will be added to your base HP pool, no matter what level it’s at. Then, if you are attacked for 6 points, you will lose that amount of temporary HP. Next, if you are attacked for another six points, four points will deplete the rest of your temporary hit points. The other two points will be taken from your base HP.

You cannot restore temporary hit points with healing spells or potions. Once temporary hit points have been lost, they can only be ‘restored’ by casting the spell or ability again.

Can You Stack Temporary Hit Points in BG3?

No, you cannot stack Temporary Hit Points in Baldur’s Gate 3. For example, if you try to cast the Armour of Agathys spell twice in a row, you will only receive the base 5 temporary hit points once.

Additionally, a source of higher temporary hit points will typically override a lesser. If your character has 5 temporary HP from Armour of Agathys, they cannot add 7 more with the False Life spell. Instead, the 7 HP from False Life will replace the 5 from Armour of Agathys. Consequently, you’ll only receive two more temporary hit points, rather than 12.
