Dragon's Dogma 2 All Fast Travel Methods

With the full release of Dragon’s Dogma 2 on March 22, 2024, there has been a lot of discussion about the size of the map and the availability of fast travel. Fast travel has been a fairly standard feature of most major RPGs and typically allows a player to quickly teleport from one location to another. The developers at Capcom are looking to do things differently than the standard, however, so let’s break down how fast travel will work in Dragon’s Dogma 2

All Fast Travel Methods in Dragon’s Dogma 2

The fast travel methods available in Dragon’s Dogma 2 will include Oxcarts and Ferrystones. The first method will provide players with a more ‘moderate speed’ way of getting from one location to another, while the latter will function more like a typical teleport method. Usually, those locations can’t be unlocked until you’ve already walked your character there once.

According to the game director Hideaki Itsuno, the world map size in Dragon’s Dogma 2 is at least four times what players saw in the original game. That means a lot of world to explore and a lot of in-game miles to walk. Additionally, the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is vast and dynamic, and travel on foot or by cart is not likely to be sedate. You’ll need to be well prepared and well rested before setting out from the safety of established towns.

In this guide, we’ll discuss all of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s fast travel methods, including where they can be found and how to use them.

How to Use Oxcarts

Dragon's Dogma 2 Oxcarts for faster travel

Oxcarts are a new feature coming to Dragon’s Dogma 2. They will allow players to travel from one town or city location to another without physically walking the entire way. However, Oxcart travel is not entirely devoid of danger. You can encounter roadblocks such as fallen trees knocked over by bandits or bridges destroyed by goblins. Griffins are attracted to bovines and have been known to attack traveling Oxcarts for a snack.

Additionally, time will continue to pass as you ride an oxcart. Therefore, you will likely want to avoid traveling in the dark. The beasts that menace the Dragon’s Dogma 2 road might bed down for the night, but arguably, more dangerous monsters will take their place.

Finally, when traveling to another location using the Oxcart, you can choose whether to close your character’s eyes while they ‘nap.’ This will let you skip at least some of the travel animations. However, in-game time will continue to pass as if you had been awake for the entire trip.

How to Use Ferrystones and Port Crystals

Using a Ferrystone (Image Source: Capcom and IGN)

Ferrystones and Portcrystals make a return from the original game in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and they function as fast travel in the more traditional RPG way. Portcrystals are items that you will use Ferrystones to instantly travel to. In the original game, stationary Portcrystals could be found in a handful of select sites scattered worldwide.

Additionally, you could also find portable Portcrystals. While heavy, you could carry it to a chosen location and set it down to create your own teleport location. It remains to be seen if the Portcrystals will work similarly or if all Portcrystals will be stationary.

Finally, to use the Portcrystals, you must also have a Ferrystone. Ferrystones are the items you will use to open a rift, taking you to the Portcrystal you choose. They are one-time-use items and are typically hard to come by. Shops will have limited stock, and they will not be cheap.

Will Dragon’s Dogma 2 Have Mounts?

Capcom has said nothing about Dragon’s Dogma 2 having mounts in the game. Therefore, it is doubtful that they are part of the sequel. This feature (or lack thereof) is a carry-over from the original game, which also did not have mounts.

In other RPGs, mounts are seen as a way for you to explore the world using a method that is faster than on foot. It usually saves your ‘Stamina’ or ‘Endurance’ bar, which is often depleted while running or sprinting.

The developers at Capcom have stated that their vision for Dragon’s Dogma 2 was to encourage the player to explore and travel mostly on foot. They have striven to make the world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 compelling and ever-changing. So, there is always something to encounter while exploring, and it never feels boring or repetitive.

Moreover, a recent Twitter/X post from the Official Dragon’s Dogma account just released some fun video of the Arisen riding on the back of a griffin. While this might suggest the idea of taming monsters as mounts, the text of the twitter post seems pretty clear that this is something the beast is doing on its own. The rider doesn’t appear to have any control over the creature and it may even been taking you back to its nest!
