Obsidian Entertainment’s extended gameplay footage showcased many familiar enemy types in Avowed.
Avowed Enemy Types
We have seen a lot of enemy types in Avowed so far, but there is still so much we don’t know.
In the world of Eora, there are roughly five enemy types: beasts, primordials, spirits, vessels, and wilders. These are important to know because abilities and weapons have different levels of effectiveness against different enemies. In the Avowed combat system, you’ll feel most powerful when you understand these weaknesses and can capitalize on them.
Beasts in the Living Lands
Obsidian has shown a few beasts in the Avowed gameplay, but one beast stands out from the other enemy types.
Pillars of Eternity players are well acquainted with bears in Eora as one of the more formidable beasts. What makes this bear stand out, however, is the fungal growths all over the beast. We know there is some kind of plague called the “Dream Scourge” across the Living Lands, but we don’t know what the corruption is. It’s still unclear if this fungal bear is impacted by this scourge or if these growths are something unique to the Living Lands themselves.
There are all kinds of beasts we know from the Pillars of Eternity series, but the Living Lands could bring many more beasts. While we haven’t seen them yet, in Pillars, players fight antelopes, beetles, boars, dragons, lions, spiders, stags, stelgaers, wolves, and more. We expect to see many more beast types, but the gameplay has not shown any new beasts.
Primordials
Primordials are another creature type in Pillars of Eternity that we expect to see in Avowed.
We haven’t seen any primordials in the gameplay footage so far. There are a few primordials we’re looking for, however. In Pillars, primordials you’ll be familiar with are delemgans, lurkers, oozes, and spores. Any of these primordials could fit the environment we’ve seen in the Living Lands. We don’t know which ones we’ll see or if we can expect to discover new primordials.
Will There Be Spirits in Avowed?
We also haven’t seen any kind of spirit enemy types within Avowed gameplay footage yet.
Spirits are beings such as blights, shadows, wisps, phantoms, or other monsters that lack corporeal beings. Many spirits are often resistant to certain elemental attacks while being weak to other elements. When you inevitably encounter spirits in Avowed, it’s best to try not to hack and slash your way through them and focus on spells and enchantments to do the most damage.
Vessels in Avowed
The vessel enemy types we’ve seen the most are the undead skeletons appearing throughout the Avowed gameplay trailer.
Skeletons appear in extremely large packs in the trailer. That may not be true to the enemy density in Avowed, however. We don’t know if you’ll need to fight off armies of skeletons or if you can expect smaller packs of skeletons during your journey through the Living Lands.
There are also other types of vessels we haven’t seen in the showcased Avowed gameplay yet. Creatures like animats, flesh constructs, or wichts could appear in the Living Lands, but we might see a creative twist for Avowed, like the fungal bear shown in the trailer.
Wilder Types in Avowed
From the showcased Avowed gameplay, the enemy type we have seen more than any other is wilders. More specifically, the wilder we have seen the most from the Avowed gameplay footage is the Xaurip. A Xaurip is a reptilian humanoid that typically wears the bones of fallen enemies. The gameplay shown takes place in Shatterscar, where Xaurip lay claim to pockets of territory.
As long-time fans will know, Xaurip are particularly vulnerable to freeze damage, which is why ice enchantments were shown freezing these enemy types throughout the showcased gameplay.
We have also very briefly seen what appears to be a large ogre wielding a club. Ogres are one of the more dangerous enemy types in the world of Eora because unlike other worlds, ogres are very intelligent in addition to being large and strong. Like many of the Pillars creatures, there are many different types of ogres with varying levels of weaponry and aggression.
We have also seen large crabs multiple times throughout the gameplay footage. In one scene, the player is shown swinging a two-handed axe down on a crab, smashing the crustacean. Like other enemy types, choosing your weapons carefully when fighting Avowed enemies can help you take down larger foes with greater ease.
Other wilder enemy types we could see in Avowed are trolls, imps, eoten, or vithrack.
