Avowed: Release Date
The developers have not yet announced the exact release date for Avowed, but during the Xbox Developer Direct it was revealed that the game is set to release in the fall of 2024. Avowed is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is the first AAA project developed by Obsidian since the company was bought by Microsoft in 2018.
Avowed Platforms: Is Avowed an Xbox Exclusive?
Avowed will specifically be a Microsoft exclusive, which means that it will release on both Xbox Series X/S and on Windows PC. Additionally, Avowed will also be available day one on Game Pass to players who have the subscription service on either Xbox or PC. Players on PC will need to have Windows 10 or 11 as their operating system.

Avowed: Story and Setting
Avowed takes place in the fantasy world of Eora, which some players may recognize as the same universe from the previous Obsidian game Pillars of Eternity. The time period setting for this game relative to the previous entries has not yet been revealed. Consequently, whether it might be a sequel or prequel to that turn-based strategy game is a guess. The most recent gameplay trailer shows a variety of different landscapes and vistas, including standard fantasy cities, forests, mountain shrines, underground caverns and caves, immaculate alters and overgrown ruins.
In Pillars of Eternity the specific setting within the world of Eora was a region called the Eastern Reach. Avowed will take place in a different region called the Living Lands, a “plagued, wild island set in the world of Eora.” Moreover, the level of technology in this setting has seen the development of basic firearms. And we see this reflected in some of the weapons shown in the trailers for Avowed.
You are the envoy of Aedyr, a distant land, sent to investigate rumors of a spreading plague. You discover a personal connection to the land itself and an ancient secret that threatens to destroy everything. Can you save the island and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them asunder?
Avowed Description – Obsidian Entertainment
The story of Avowed appears to revolve around you as the protagonist being sent to the Living Lands by the Emperor. Your appointed task is to investigate a plague which has been infecting living creatures not only physically, but possibly affecting their souls, as well. The trailers seem to suggest that you have powers and abilities never seen before, and the people living there aren’t sure whether or not you’re to be trusted. What choices will you make, what person will you become and what will the consequences be?
Avowed: Gameplay
Gameplay mechanics in Avowed include real-time combat using magic, weapons, and/or firearms, companions to meet and recruit, crafting and upgrades to weapons and equipment and skill trees to level. Everything we know about Avowed gameplay primarily comes from what we’ve seen in the most recent trailer as well as an Xbox Wire article released about this same time. Obsidian Entertainment is endorsing it’s ‘all-new first person combat system’. We get a few brief glimpses of combat in action during the trailer. In a manner similar to Skyrim, you can wield both magic and melee. With a sword in one hand while casting magic with the other.
Furthermore, at the recent Xbox Developer Direct it was revealed that you can create customizable load-outs, which you can save and then easily switch between during combat. So that you can dual-wield wands for mid-range attacks and then switch to a sword and shield for defense. You’ll need this flexibility to deal with a variety of different enemy types, each with their own strengths and weaknesses.
Avowed Companions
Additionally, companions will also be an integral part of your journey in Avowed. You can bring up to two companions with you at a time, and you’ll need to choose wisely because each will have their own unique combination of skills and abilities. So far the only companion Obsidian has shared with us has been a Coastal Aumaua named Kai. Kai makes a central appearance in the recent gameplay trailer, providing more context for the story.
He is a former soldier, and his idealistic and pragmatic temperament will help guide you as you venture out into this wild frontier.

Obsidian Entertainment has only released only a couple of trailers for Avowed as of mid November 2023. The first announcement trailer for the game dropped on Youtube in the summer of 2020. It offered players just a glimpse into the world without any type of gameplay and only a hint of story. Three years later we finally got an Official Gameplay Trailer in 2023. This time there is a bit more insight into the story and lore. Additionally, it also included some reveals of weapon types, gameplay mechanics and enemies.
While the culmination of everything we know about Avowed may not seem like much just yet, Obsidian Entertainment is sure to reveal more to fans after the first of the year! With this and more to come, hopefully the video games industry will be as robust in the new year as it has been in 2023.
