Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Clothing for Sorcerer Class

Discover the best Sorcerer Clothing in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3), equipping your class with the top 10 early and end-game choices.

Best Clothing for Sorcerer Class - BG3

The Sorcerer class in Baldur’s Gate 3 has no armour proficiencies, and therefore you will be limited to clothing and robes to protect your character. When choosing defensive robes for your Sorcerer, it is important to consider your character’s playstyle and the types of enemies you will be facing. Thankfully, there are many notable clothing items that come with powerful set bonuses that aid in defensive or offensive playstyle. The following guide will explain the best clothing for the Sorcerer class and how to use it.

This guide has been updated for the Patch 7 version of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Best Clothing for Sorcerer Class in Baldur’s Gate 3

The best clothing for the Sorcerer class in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Potent Robe, Helldusk Armour, and Robe of the Weave. Potent Robe is the best overall clothing item because it aids in damage and defensive capabilities. You can multiclass your Sorcerer to a Sorclock (Warlock) and gain a powerful Eldritch Blast. Potent Robes will increase your damage with cantrips and are very helpful when playing on higher difficulty along with extra Temporary Hit Points. Helldusk Armour is heavy, but you gain proficiency by boosting your AC to 21! Lastly, Robe of the Weave gives you a passive boost to spell saves and attacks along with AC. Regardless of your Act and subclass, let us review the best clothes/clothing for the Sorcerer class.

Best Clothing for Sorcerer Class in Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3):

  1. Potent Robe: +1 AC, Damage to Cantrips, Temporary HP
  2. Helldusk Armour: 21 AC and Fire Resistance
  3. Robe of the Weave: +2 AC, +1 Spell Save and Attack
  4. Wavemother’s Robe: Fire and Cold Resistance
  5. Robe of Supreme Defences: Boost to AC and save while concentrating
  6. Obsidian Laced Robe: Fire Resistance and Fire Damage on Save
  7. Icebite Robe: Cold Resistance and Spell
  8. Infernal Robe: Fire Resistance and Spell
  9. The Protecy Sparkswall: +1 Spell Save
  10. Poisoner’s Robes: Extra Poison damage

10 Poisoner’s Robes

Poisoner’s Robes features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Uncommon
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 3.6 lb
  • Value: 250 gp
  • Where to Find: Dropped by Phase Spider Matriarch
  • Special Bonus: Posion Trails

Early in Act 1, look to collect the Poisoner’s Robe clothing item as an early upgrade for your gear. This clothing item has a Poison Trails special feature that increases poison damage by 1-4. While this isn’t impressive, you can obtain the Staff of Crones by defeating Auntie Ethel in Act 1. This staff gives the poison Ray of SIckeness spell-free per short rest and can do decent damage combined with Poisoner’s Robes.

Sadly, Act 1 isn’t filled with useful clothing items and quarterstaffs for your Sorcerer build. However, consider obtaining the Bracers of Defence gloves. This can give you +2 AC without wearing armour or a shield. Lastly, if you have a race that can equip a shield, remember that quarterstaffs are versatile weapons. Thus, you can equip a staff and a shield together for extra survivability. Later Acts will have much better options, but this should be your primary target early on.

9 The Protecty Sparkswall

The Protecty Sparkswall features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 3.9 lb
  • Value: 260 gp
  • Where to Find: Bridge within the Grymforge, behind traps.
  • Special Bonus: High Spellcasting, Sparswall Armour

Another useful clothing item for your Sorcerer in Act 1 is the Protecty Sparkswall found in the Grymforge. Passively, this clothing item gives a +1 bonus to spell save DC. However, you can obtain another item that grants lighting charges and gain +1 AC and Saving throws while you have lighting charges. An early combination is this clothing item combined with the Spellsparkler quarterstaff.

The Spellsparkler can be found early in Act 1 at Waukeen’s Rest. It’s a reward for reducing Counsellor Florrick and should be chosen if you intend to use Protecy Sparkswall. The Spellsparkler gives 2 lighting charges when you deal damage with a spell and or a cantrip. With this combination, you can obtain high AC and defensive benefits while playing aggressively. Consider the protect Sparkwall and Spellsparkler combination one of the best clothing items in Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 1.

8 Infernal Robe

Infernal Robe features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Very Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 4.0 lb
  • Value: 1600 gp
  • Where to Find: Wyll kills Karlach to get a reward from Mizora (additional ways).
  • Special Bonus: Fire Shield Warm Sepp, Fire Resistance, +1 AC

When you recruit both Wyll and Karlach companions, they have a feud that can be negotiated or turn violent. The Infernal Robes is one of the best clothing items in BG3 but requires you to kill Karlach. There used to be a method for getting the Robe without having to kill Karlach. However, the developers changed this in Patch 5 and unfortunately this is no longer possible.

The reason Infernal Robes is so powerful is gaining Fire resistance. This reduces damage from Fire by half. You can also use the Sorcerer subclass Draconic Bloodline to pick a different elemental like Cold, Lighting, or Thunder. At level 6, you will gain affinity and resistance to that type of element. Thus, you will have two types of damage reductions which come in handy in later Acts where fire and cold are common damage sources.

Lastly, Infernal Robes gives you a powerful level 4 Evocation spell, Fire Shield: Warm. While active, you will take half damage from cold and do 2d8 fire damage to anyone who attacks you with melee damage. This spell is a hard counter to melee aggressors and doesn’t require concentration. Depending on your party composition, consider acquiring the Infernal Robes for your Sorcerer build.

7 Icebite Robe

Icebite Robe features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 3.6 lb
  • Value: 800 gp
  • Where to Find: Saccophagus in Act 2, Shadow-Cursed Lands X: -158 Y: 73.
  • Special Bonus:

Early in Act 2, consider searching the Shadow-Cursed Lands Saccorphagus near the Grand Mauselum for the Icebite Robe. Icebite Robe is one of the best clothing items in Act 2 because of the free spell Armour of Agathys and Cold Resistance. Armour of Agathys is a Level 1 Abjuration spell, that grants the user 5 temporary hit points and returns 5 cold damage to melee attackers if hit. The spell lasts until a long rest and does not require concentration making it a strong defensive self-buff spell.

Moreover, Icebite Robe upcasts this spell to Level 3 once per long rest. This upcasting, or higher level spell increases the amount of Temporary Hit Points gained and cold damage. Now you will immediately gain 15 temporary HP and return 15 cold damage to melee attackers! The best part about the Icebite Robe for your Sorcerer is you can combine it with Elemental Affinity and Resistance for Fire and have protection against two elemental types. You could go with a third layer of protection by selecting a Dragonborn Race, choosing another elemental which would give you three elemental resistance. Consider Icebite Robe a powerful Act 2 clothing item for any Sorcerer build that can be easily obtained.

6 Obsidian Laced Robe

Obsidian Laced Robe features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 3.9 lb
  • Value: 800 gp
  • Where to Find: Quartermaster Talli, Act 2 Last Light Inn Vendor.
  • Special Bonus: Flaming Revenge, Fire Resistance

If you arrived in Act 2 looking for an easy boost to your clothing item, consider purchasing an Obsidian Laced Robe from Talli in the Last Light Inn. What makes these robes useful is fire resistance and the Flaming Revenge special feature. On a spell-saving throw, you return 5-8 damage to the attacker. The Sorcerer can combine this retaliation bonus with a spell-like Counterspell and multiclass into the Warlock for Hellish Rebuke. This loadout would give you 3 potential ways to counter or punish enemy spellcasters.

While these Robes do not seem overpowered, Obsidian Laced robes can be purchased directly from a vendor. This bypasses any miscellaneous puzzles, or if you missed early Robes in Act 1 for your Sorcerer. Consider spending the gold for a quick upgrade or pass the clothing on to a fellow spellcasting companion.

5 Robe of Supreme Defences

Robe of Supreme Defences features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Very Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 3.6 lb
  • Value: 1600 gp
  • Where to Find: In Act 3, Rivinington Vendor Ferg Drogher.
  • Special Bonus: Exquisite Focus

Upon arriving in Rivington in Act 3, you can purchase the Robe of Supreme Defences from the merchant Ferg Drogher. What makes Robe of Supreme Defences strong is the defensive boost while concentrating via the Exquisite Focus special feature. While concentrating, you add your spellcasting Ability Modifier to your saving throws and gain a +1 bonus to Armour Class.

It is not uncommon for a Sorcerer to have 20 Charisma at this level, or with the Birthright hat, 22 Charisma. This would give you a +6 bonus to saving throws! Essentially it makes it very hard for an enemy to hit you. One common Sorcerer method for concentration is using Twinned Metamagic with the Haste spell. This will give two allies the Hasten status effect, an extra action per turn for 10 turns or until your concentration is broken. Typically, you cast this spell on yourself and another high-damage dealer on turn one and try to avoid damage. This is a powerful buff and support combination for the Sorcerer build which in turn makes you very survivable in the process.

4 Wavemother’s Robe

Wavemother’s Robe features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Very Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 1 lb
  • Value: 2240 gp
  • Where to Find: Water Queen’s House during Act 3 finishing quest.
  • Special Bonus: Temperature Adjustment, Watery Rejuvenation, Create Water spell, AC +1

If you were looking for a subclass-specific Sorcerer Clothing item, it would be the Wavemother’s Robe and the Storm Sorcery subclass. The Storm Sorcerer focuses on the Thunder and Lighting elements. When water is combined with Lighting, you can electrocute enemies causing extra damage per turn. The Wavemother’s Robe is perfect for this playstyle because it rewards the user for standing on water surfaces, by healing you for 1-4 HP per turn.

In addition, you gain resistance to Fire and Cold while the Storm Sorcery subclass gains elemental resistance to Lighting and Thunder passively. As mentioned earlier, you could go even further taking the Dragonborn race and an ancestry for a 5th elemental resistance! Consider the Wavemother’s Robe god-tier for the Storm Sorcery subclass, and a great overall Clothing item for any Sorcerer build in Baldur’s Gate 3.

3 Robe of the Weave

Robe of the Weave features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Very Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 3.6 lb
  • Value: 2900 gp
  • Where to Find: In Ramazith’s Tower during Act 3.
  • Special Bonus: Aracne Enhancement, Wave Eater, +AC

Consider the Robe of the Weave one of the best all-around Clothing items for the Sorcerer in Baldur’s Gate 3. Robe of the Weave is relatively easy to get, simply by travelling to Ramazith’s Tower where you can collect the Markoheshkir Legendary staff as well. What makes the Robe of the Weave powerful is its defensive bonuses to Spell Saves, healing on saving throws, and Armour Class +2. In addition, these bonuses are passively given to you and do not require any special activation or spells.

What holds the Robe of the Weave back from being higher on the list is zero offensive benefits. While defensive bonuses are great, your Sorcerer is often incentivised to do so much damage on turn one, that you may not need any defensive benefits. Moreover, the Helldusk Armour provides more defensive properties, so there are better defensive options. However, it’s one of the best clothing items because it’s a powerful defensive set that can be obtained early in Act 3.

2 Helldusk Armour

Helldusk Armour features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Heavy
  • Armour Class: 21
  • Proficiency Requirement: None (unique)
  • Rarity: Legendary
  • Weight: 20 kg / 40 lb
  • Value: 8,000 gp
  • Where to Find: Looted from Raphael in the House of Hope Act 3.
  • Special Bonus: Armour Proficiency, Infernal Retribution, Prime Aegis of Fire, Fly

The best defensive set for the Sorcerer is Helldusk Armour obtained in the House of Hope late in Act 3. Uniquely, Helldusk Armour grants Heavy Armour Proficiency while wearing, thus you can equip it and still cast spells. Once equipped, you gain a staggering 21 Armour Class (AC) and 3 less damage from all sources. Simply put, there’s nothing that beats Helldusk Armour’s defensive properties for a Sorcerer class in Baldur’s Gate 3.

However, it’s not number one because Helldusk Armour has zero offensive benefits. As a Sorcerer, you shouldn’t play as a front-line Fighter, Barbarian, or Paladin, relying on range, Counterspell, Shield, and Mirror Image for protection. Moreover, you want something that enhances not only defensive power but offensive as well. And thankfully, there is one such item.

1 Potent Robe

Potent Robe features in Baldur’s Gate 3:

  • Armour Type: Clothing
  • Armour Class: 10 + Dexterity Modifier
  • Proficiency Requirement: None
  • Rarity: Very Rare
  • Weight: 1.8 kg / 4 lb
  • Value: 1,600 gp
  • Where to Find: Complete Rescue the Tiefling’s quest in Act 2 from Alfira NPC.
  • Special Bonus: Gregarious Caster, Well-liked and Well-Fortified, and AC +1

The best overall clothing item for the Sorcerer in Baldur’s Gate 3 is Potent Robes. You can obtain Potent Robes in Act 2 by rescuing the Tieflings from Moonrise Tower. What makes this Robe powerful is a bonus to offensive and defensive potential tied to your overall Charisma Modifier. Uniquely, the Sorcerer can achieve very high Charisma with a Birthright helmet and Mirror of the Loss permanent bonus.

The Birthright Helmet found in Act 3 gives you +2 to Charisma up to 22. In addition, during Shadowheart’s questline in Act 3, you will seal the fate of her parents (no spoiler). Within the quest is a Mirror of the Loss. This will cause you to pass a 25 DC check and another 20 DC check. If you do, you can sacrifice one ability score to permanently boost one by +2. The negative bonus is removed after a long rest, leaving you with 24 Charisma and a +7 Charisma Modifier!

How to Use the Potent Robe in BG3

Now, if we take a look at the two Potent Robe bonuses, you could gain 7 Temporary Hit Points every turn and an additional 7 damage with Cantrips. A popular build is the Sorclock, multiclassing Sorcerer with the Warlock using Hex and Eldritch Blast combination. If done right, you can do 30-50+ damage with a cantrip and not consume any spell slots. This is very helpful when playing Tactician or the highest-difficulty Honour Mode with a high resting cost (80 per long rest).

The last tip for Potent Robes is to use the Quickspell Gloves in combination with them. Quickspell Gloves can be purchased in Act 3 from Rolan at Lorroakan’s Projection. It allows you to use Cantrip as a bonus action rather than an action. This allows the Sorcerer to cast the Eldritch Blast cantrip and a powerful spell in the same turn. Moreover, you can cast Disentategtion, the most powerful single target spell on two targets using Twinned Magic. Then, follow it up with a cantrip like Firebolt. While Potent Robes doesn’t have the defensive capabilities of Helldusk Armour, it’s easy to obtain and powerful for offensive and defensive potential.

Consider Potent Robes the best overall clothing item for the Sorcerer Class in Baldur’s Gate 3.
