All Temporary Companions in Baldur’s Gate 3

Temporary companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 can be connected to hidden side quests, unique gear, and even achievements.

All Temporary Companions in Baldur's Gate 3 BG3

In Baldur’s Gate 3, temporary companions can join your party much like the various types of summons you can conjure with spells. For a brief period, they will travel and fight with you. Additionally, you can control all the movements and actions they take during combat. Consequently, this means you’ll also need to keep a careful eye on their health! They are vulnerable to falling in battle and if their HP reaches zero they can die. Moreover, you cannot resurrect non-companion NPCs in BG3, so if they die then it is permanent. In some cases, this may lock you out of potential rewards.

How to Get All Temporary Companions in BG3

You can meet all of the temporary companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 in different locations, and each will have different conditions you’ll need to meet to have them join you. Most will require certain responses in dialogue. Moreover, some of those dialogue options will require you to pass some type of difficulty check.

The following sections divide the temporary companions into the Acts where you can find and recruit them. Furthermore, some of these characters are tied into the main story. Therefore, if you haven’t completed your first play through then there could be spoilers below.

Temporary Companions in Act 1 of BG3

The are four potential temporary companions you can find in Act 1 of Baldur’s Gate 3. One is specific to Lae’zel’s origin story, but the other three can be found on any type of playthrough. Technically, the first two temporary companions listed here are found in the Prologue, but we’ll include them here for simplicity’s sake.

Us

BG3 How to Unlock Summon Us
  • Location: On the Nautiloid Ship in the prologue, interact with Myrnath in the second room
  • Related Quest: Escape the Nautiloid
  • Utility: In Act 2, save it again and Us will become a summonable companion
  • Gear: None

You can first meet the small Intellect devourer ‘Us’ on the nautiloid ship during the Prologue of Baldur’s Gate 3. If you free it from the skull of Myrnath in the second room, it will join your party for the rest of the prologue. It doesn’t do a lot of damage to enemies, but you need all the help you can get when you’re only a Level 1. Additionally, it can be helpful to have it along if you are planning on challenging Commander Zhalk for the powerful Everburn Blade.

Us will be lost during the nautiloid crash, but you can find it again during Act 2 down in the Mind Flayer Colony. Free it from the cage in the Morgue and you will permanently unlock Us as a summon companion for the rest of the game.

Losiir

Baldur's Gate 3 Losiir from Lae'zel Origin Story Prologue
  • Location: On the Nautiloid Ship in the prologue, only if you are playing a Lae’zel origin character
  • Related Quest: Escape the Nautiloid
  • Utility: Takes Lae’zel’s original place in the prologue
  • Gear: An extra set of Githyanki Half Plate

Losiir is possibly the ‘rarest’ of the temporary companions in Baldur’s Gate 3 because he only shows up if you are playing through the game as Lae’zel. In a normal playthrough, Lae’zel is the companion you first run into on the ship. She makes a dramatic entrance before the two of you connect through the tadpoles. After deeming you not a current threat, you band together to get off the ship.

Therefore, when you are playing as Lae’zel, Larian Studios needed someone to take her place in the story. The Githyanki Losiir is the solution. He will recognize Lae’zel and be grateful he has someone to escape the ship with. The rest of the prologue will play out much the same. However, after the ship crashes, Losiir will be dead. You can find his body on the beach and loot him for another set of strong Githyanki Half Plate.

Sazza

Baldur's Gate 3 Goblin Sazza
  • Location: Makeshift Prison in the Hollow of the Emerald Grove
  • Related Quest: Save the Goblin Sazza
  • Utility: Earn the ‘She Cannot Be Caged!’ achievement for saving Sazza from the Grove, Goblin Camp, and Moonrise Towers
  • Gear: Assassin’s Touch dagger is a reward for escorting Sazza to the Goblin Camp

You can find Sazza in the back northwest corner of the Emerald Grove, locked inside a cage in their Makeshift Prison. She’s being threatened by an angry Tiefling and you can interfere to save her life. She’ll mention a Priestess Gut if you speak with her, as a possible healer solution to your tadpole problem. Moreover, she’ll tell you if you can get her out, she’ll make sure you can meet the Priestess.

If you agree and unlock the cage, then Sazza will become a temporary companion while you escort her out of the Emerald Grove. You can try taking her out the front gate, but this requires passing a lot of Deception or Persuasion checks. A better way is to take her out by the secret entrance at the back of the prison. This will lead you to an Underground Passage. When you are finally outside, Sazza will leave the party and promise to meet up with you again at the Goblin Camp.

Glut

Baldur's Gate 3 Myconid Glut thumbnail
  • Location: Myconid Colony in the Underdark
  • Related Quest: Avenge Glut’s Circle
  • Utility: Can choose to support either Sovereign Glut or Sovereign Spaw
  • Gear: Champion’s Chain is a unique reward from Glut after completing Deliver Nere’s Head

Sovereign Glut is a king without a people in Baldur’s Gate 3 and you can meet him while visiting the Myconid Colony in the Underdark. This particular colony is under the leadership of Sovereign Spaw, but Glut has been invited in because of the tragedy that struck his people. Glut’s colony was all slayed by duergar, and now he is looking for revenge. Agree to help him, and Glut will immediately join your group.

It’s recommended that you go directly to the Decrepit Village with Glut to deal with the duergar first thing. Glut doesn’t have a lot of HP and walking around with him in the Underdark is a good way to get him killed. For that matter, keep a close eye on him during the duergar fight, too. Should Glut survive, he will leave your party and then ask you to support him in taking over the Myconid Colony from Spaw. If you support him, you can win the Champion’s Chain from him later on. If you decide to support Spaw, he will reward you with the Envoy’s Amulet for the same later quest.

Temporary Companions in Act 2 of BG3

There are only two temporary companions you can find in Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3. Furthermore, both of them can also become camp followers during the story. Additionally, they will follow you into Act 3 where Aylin can become a powerful ally in the final battle.

Aylin

Baldur's Gate 3 Dame Aylin confronting Ketheric Thorm
  • Location: Gauntlet of Shar, within the Shadowfell
  • Related Quest: Find the Nightsong
  • Utility: Can join you in the fight against Ketheric Thorm, become a camp follower, and ally in the final fight
  • Gear: Rewards Selûne’s Spear of Night if the Nightsong is freed

To find Aylin you must discover and make your way through the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2. At the end of the trials, you will travel through a portal to into the Shadowfell. There, Shadowheart will have to decide if her true loyalties lie with Shar, or if she is willing to consider another path. The only way to have Aylin join your group as a temporary companion is to free her.

Furthermore, Aylin will not join you immediately but will be present during the final confrontation with General Ketheric Thorm. She’ll appear during the fight at the top of Moonrise Towers, but only to interrupt Ketheric’s attempt to control you. However, during the second phase of the fight at the bottom of the Mind Flayer Colony, she will be held captive at the back of a room in a cage. Free her there and she will join your party for the rest of the fight. She is a huge help and can deal a lot of damage, helping you claim loot like Reaper’s Embrace and Ketheric’s Shield.

Isobel

Save Isobel in Baldur's Gate 3
  • Location: At the Last Light Inn in the Shadow-Cursed Lands
  • Related Quest: Resolve the Abduction
  • Utility: Isobel can grant you a blessing that protects you from the Shadow Curse
  • Gear: Shifting Corpus Ring dropped by Marcus

After you make your way to the Last Light Inn during Act 2 of Baldur’s Gate 3, Jaheira will suggest that you go upstairs to speak with their resident cleric of Selûne, Isobel. She is the one casting the magic light spell which is currently protecting the Inn and allowing everyone to live safely inside. Speaking to Isobel for the first time will trigger a cutscene and fight, however, so be prepared.

Flaming Fist Marcus will interrupt and reveal himself as a traitor. He is there to kidnap Isobel for Ketheric Thorm and he’s brought several Winged Horrors along to help. Many of the Harpers, including Jaheira, will become allies in this fight. Additionally, Isobel herself joins your party and fights against Marcus, as well. This only lasts so long as the fight does, and once it ends you go your separate ways.

Temporary Companions in Act 3 of BG3

There are 10 temporary companions you can meet and join forces with in Act 3. Some of them come at the end of consequential choices, while others are a surprise one seemingly smaller side quests.

Counsellor Florrick

Baldur's Gate 3 Counsellor Florrick NPC
  • Location: Inside a cell in Wyrm’s Rock Prison
  • Related Quest: Free Counsellor Florrick
  • Utility: If freed, becomes an ally in the final fight
  • Gear: None

You may have met Counsellor Florrick at Waukeen’s Rest during Act 1 and you can find her again in need of your help during Act 3. Gortash has placed her under arrest and she sits in a cell in Wyrm’s Rock Prison waiting for her death sentence to be carried out. It’s easy enough to lock-pick the cell to get Florrick out. At this point, she will join your party and you will have to safely escort her outside.

If you don’t want to fight all of the guards it’s best to cast an Invisibility spell on Florrick. Then, take her out of the Prison through a wall that can be broken down in the back of the storeroom on the east side of the map. Through that hole, you’ll find a path that takes you out through a crevice in the wall. She will leave your party once outside, but promises to help in the battle to come. In the final fight, you can Florrick’s Cohort, which includes two Fist Attackers and a Fist Defender.

Duke Ravengard

Choosing to Save Duke Ravengard in Baldur’s Gate 3
  • Location: Wyrm’s Rock Fortress, and then the Iron Throne prison
  • Related Quest: The Grand Duke
  • Utility: If saved, can become a camp follower and will tell the party about Ansur
  • Gear: None

Duke Ravengard plays a pivotal role in Wyll’s personal history, and if you are willing to attempt his rescue from the Iron Throne prison he can offer you some helpful information. You’ll first see him in Act 3 during Gortash’s ceremony at Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. You can speak with him afterward, but can’t do anything yet to help him.

Mizora will use this as an opportunity to try and cut a new eternal deal with Wyll, in exchange for his father’s life. The Duke is being held at the high security prison the Iron Throne, and you can attempt a rescue. Break him out of his cell and Duke Ravengard will join your party for the run back to the submersible before the whole place is blown to bits.

Omeluum

Baldur's Gate 3 Omeluum after you save him from the Iron Throne
  • Location: Iron Throne prison
  • Related Quest: Retrieve Omeluum
  • Utility: Can teleport back to the submersible after you reach him in the cell
  • Gear: Rewards a pouch with scrolls and potions for saving him

While you’re in the Iron Throne saving Duke Ravengard and all of the Gondian Gnomes, don’t forget to be on the lookout for your mind-flayer friend Omeluum. He’s locked in the cell found in the southwest corner of the prison. He’ll only join your party for the short little bit it takes to get back to the submersible. However, if you can spare a party member for him, he’ll make it very easy to get back to the ladder with a teleport spell.

Visit him again at the Society of Brilliance Lodge and he will give you a modest reward. The pouch includes: a Wizardsbane Oil, a Fungal Bamboozler, a Scroll of Dimension Door, a Scroll of Sunbeam, and a Potion of Supreme Healing

Aylin

Baldur's Gate 3 Dame Aylin after defeating Lorroakan
  • Location: Your camp, then Sorcerous Sundries
  • Related Quest: Find the Nightsong
  • Utility: A powerful ally in the fight against Lorroakan
  • Gear: Loot the Shelter of Athkatla and Despair of Athkatla from Lorroakan

As mentioned previously, after the events at the end of Act 2 Aylin (with Isobel) will come with you as a camp follower in Act 3. After you visit Sorcerous Sundries for the first time you can discover that Lorroakan was the wizard who was originally paying adventurers to find the Nightsong for him. Return to camp to tell this to Aylin and she angrily flies off to confront him.

When you return to Sorcerous Sundries you will have to choose between siding with Aylin or with Lorroakan. To be fair, Lorroakan will reward you with 5,000 gold and become an ally in the final battle. But that seems a poor reason to choose to let Aylin be trapped again after you just set her free before. Plus, a dead Lorroakan has some sweet loot you can take after you help Aylin bring him down.

Zanner Toobin

BG3 Zanner Toobin
  • Location: Steel Watch Foundry
  • Related Quests: Save the Gondians, Avenge the Ironhands, Disable the Steel Watch
  • Utility: Can aid you in the destruction of the Steel Watch Foundry
  • Gear: Winkling Gloves, can be looted from Zanner if he dies

If you visit the Steel Watch Foundry before going down to the Iron Throne, then Zanner Tobin will be in the back and refuse to help because of the danger to the hostages. After you free the hostages and return, the next time you enter the Foundry Tobin will be leading a revolt. This fight here can be difficult if you’re trying to keep all of the Gondians alive. If it’s too much trouble, then Tobin should be your main priority.

Afterward, Tobin will share that he knows a secret passcode to make the foundry self-destruct. He’ll join your party as you go deeper into the Foundry. He won’t enter the Control Room at all until you’ve defeated the Steel Watcher Titan. Moreover, if he does die along the way, you can use Speak with Dead to find the passcode. Additionally, you can also use the Runepowder Bomb given to you by Wulbren in Angleiron’s Cellar to accomplish the same thing.

Hope

BG3 Saving Hope thumbnail
  • Location: House of Hope
  • Related Quest: Free Orpheus, Deal with the Devil, Save Hope
  • Utility: Can help you in the fight against Raphael
  • Gear: Gloves of Soul Catching, the reward for completing the Save Hope quest. Must keep Hope alive through the fight with Raphael.

Hope is an unexpected ally you will find when you go hunting for the Orphic Hammer in Raphael’s House of Hope (via the portal in the Devil’s Fee). She is being kept captive somewhere deep within the House but speaks to you through a projection. She’s a bit addled, but happy to help if you’ll help her in turn. When searching through the House it’s best to save the Orphic Hammer for last, as the alarm you set off while stealing it will summon Raphael.

With the Hammer in hand, you’ll have just enough time to fight your way across the House and free Hope from her bonds. Afterward, you can make a run for the portal (stop by the Restoration Faucet in the Boudoir to heal up). Raphael will appear and one of the most epic battles in the game will begin. It can be tricky to keep Hope alive during the fight, to earn the Gloves of Soul Catching. You can try to keep her safe underneath of Globe of Invulnerability spell if you have a high-level spellcaster on hand.

Yurgir

BG3 Yurgir in Act 3
  • Location: House of Hope
  • Related Quest: Deal with the Devil, Gather Your Allies
  • Utility: Can help you in the fight against Raphael
  • Gear: Hellfire Hand Crossbow (only if it wasn’t already looted from him during Act 2)

In the final confrontation with Raphael, he will summon Yurgir, who you will likely remember from the Gauntlet of Shar in Act 2. Depending on your actions with Yurgir during those events, it’s possible to get him to switch sides and fight against Raphael with you. If you helped free him from his contract, then he will switch allegiances without you having to convince him.

Furthermore, if you killed him in Act 2, then you still have a slim chance of getting him on your side. However, it will require that you successfully pass a 30 DC Persuasion roll. Therefore, if you want to have the greatest chance of success with Yurgir, it’s best to initially speak to Raphael with your highest Charisma character.

Finally, if you convince Yurgir to switch sides and he lives through the fight, then he will agree to aid the party in your final battle. He will become a summonable ally again, as you fight against the Netherbrain. However, if he dies you still have a chance to loot the strong Hellfire Hand Crossbow from him, assuming you didn’t already collect it in Act 2.

Strange Ox

BG3 Strange Ox in Rivington
  • Location: Southeast Rivington, inside a small barn
  • Related Quest: Help the Devilish Ox
  • Utility: Becomes a summonable ally in the final battle
  • Gear: Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring, for completing Help the Devilish Ox

To get the Strange Ox as a temporary companion in Baldur’s Gate 3 you must interact with him in both Act 1 and Act 2 without antagonizing him into a fight. In Act 1 you can find him in the Emerald Grove and then in Act 2 in the barn at the Last Light Inn. In Act 3 you’ll be able to discover him very early on if you take an immediate right after arriving in Rivington and checking out the small barn in the southeast corner of the map.

Use Speak with Animals before interacting with him, and again take care not to antagonize him. When he asks for your help getting into the city, agree. He will turn himself into an apple and fit into your pocket. That’s all you have to do. When you enter the Lower City for the first time, you will get a notification that you’ve completed Help the Devilish Ox and you’ll receive the Shapeshifter’s Boon Ring.

Afterward, you won’t see the Strange Ox again until the very end of the game. He’ll become an ally during the final fight against the Netherbrain. You can summon him into battle, and he’ll reveal his true form as an Ooze named Zlorb.

The Emperor

BG3 The Emperor in Act 3
  • Location: Astral Prism
  • Related Quest: Confront the Elder Brain
  • Utility: Can use the Karsus’ Compulsion, a spell essential to defeating the Netherbrain
  • Gear: Orphic Ring, looted from Orpheus if you side with the Emperor

The Emperor has been at your side for the entire game, but he only becomes a temporary companion in your party during the final battle against the Netherbrain. For this to happen you must agree to side with the Emperor, and let him assimilate Orpheus and all of the Githyanki Prince’s powers. Now the Emperor will be free to leave the Astral Prism and come with you as you climb the High Hall to reach the Netherbrain.

As a powerful Illithid, the Emperor has with him all of the usual Illithid powers including Levitate for mobility, Mind Blast for damage and stun, and  Mind Flayer Domination which can control enemies. Additionally, he also has some strong spells at his disposal. Slow, Evard’s Black Tentacles, and Chain Lightning are probably the most useful. Once you reach the Netherbrain your main goal with the Emperor is not to have him fight, but to get him across the field to the Crown so that he can cast Karsus’ Compulsion. This will open a portal that will allow you to attack the Netherbrain directly.

Orpheus

Consequences of Saving Orpheus in BG3
  • Location: Astral Prism
  • Related Quest: Free Orpheus
  • Utility: Can use the Karsus’ Compulsion, a spell essential to defeating the Netherbrain
  • Gear: None (The Orphic Ring can only be acquired if Orpheus is dead)

Whether you should side with the Emperor or save Orpheus is one of the most crucial choices in the game. Orpheus has the power of the Karsus’ Compulsion innately, while the Emperor has to take it from him by consuming the Prince. There is no way in Baldur’s Gate 3 to get these two to cooperate. If you choose to free Orpheus, then the Emperor will immediately leave. Moreover, you will find him at the top of High Hall and face him as a foe.

However, with the Emperor gone, you will have to make the follow-up decision about who will become a mind flayer in order to properly wield the power of the Karsus’ Compulsion spell. You can choose between your character, Orpheus himself, or Karlach if she is in your party at the time. Regardless of the choice, Orpheus will accompany you to the Netherbrain.

Additionally, his available list of skills and abilities can be quite useful in the final fight. He can cast Glove of Invulnerability, which is incredibly helpful with keeping the one casting Karsus’ Compulsion protected while they are casting.
