Which Background should you choose in Baldur’s Gate 3?
In Baldur’s Gate 3, you should choose whatever suits your character and you simply like. Backgrounds have defined proficiencies, while classes have a list of skills they can be proficient with, and you can pick only two or three. As a result, regardless of which background you choose, your class proficiencies can be adjusted during character creation in the skills tab, preventing you from wasting potential. Additionally, proficiency is what your character is good at and what knowledge they possess. Therefore, always pick what suits your character’s story and/or will give you the best statistics.
Therefore, if you want the best character performance, you should choose a background and proficiencies that boosts your class, primarily statistic. For example, if you are a Druid and your primary ability is Wisdom, you should aim to be proficient in Animal Handling, Insight, Medicine, Perception, and Survival. As a result, Folk Hero (Survival, Animal Handling) is the background that includes those skills and could be a good choice for Druid or Cleric.
Some backgrounds are similar to each other and offer similar Proficiencies. For Example, Charlatan and Criminal backgrounds are masters of manipulation, and their inspirational goals focus on talking their way through challenging situations. However, criminals are better at stealth, and Charlatans are better at lockpicking. Regardless you can pick a class with proficiencies that allow you to create a mix of Charlatan and Criminal skills. As a result, be proficient in stealing and sneaking at the same time, which can benefit you in many ways. If you don’t mind spoilers, you can check the inspiration goals for each background and adjust proficiencies to them before finalizing your character creation.
