What is Outlander Background?

Outlander is a background in Baldur’s Gate 3, and it represents their proficiencies, where the character comes from, and what their life was like before. NPC characters, including your companions, will recognize your foreign origin. You can also use your athletic and survival skills to help your team explore and safely complete missions. Being an Outlander can sometimes earn you friendships or disrespect.

You grew up in the wilds, learning to survive far from the comforts of civilization. Surviving unusual hazards of the wild will enhance your prowess and understanding.

What are Outlander Proficiencies?

In addition to the role-playing aspect, the background defines proficiencies, giving you a slight bonus to dice rolls and success in checks. Proficiency is what your character is good at and what knowledge they possess. This background’s default proficiencies are Athletics, History, Insight, Perception, and Survival. Your Outlander proficiency features are Athletic and Survival.

Athletic is a Strength skill that will help you with the following checks:

  • Climbing when something is trying to knock off
  • Jumping higher and long distances.
  • Avoid hazardous areas

Survival is a Wisdom skill that will help you with the following checks:

  • Hunt in the Wild
