Map and Locations Overview in BG3
In Baldur’s Gate 3, all map locations will be shrouded in black darkness until the first time your character explores an area. Your character has a ‘cone’ of light around them, and as you move through a new location this will “unfog” the area on the map. Therefore, when you first enter a brand new region, you will not be able to fully see everything on the map. The only way to uncover everything is to walk your character around and explore.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is broken up into three major Acts, and within each of these Acts are major regions to explore. For example, you will start Act 1 in the Wilderness. However, within this large forest region are many locations to find. Not all of them may have characters or events that tie directly back into the main story. But, there is usually something special, like a boss fight, extra loot, good gear, or even a permanent bonus you can earn.
Consequently, the real fun in Baldur’s Gate 3 comes with the exploration. Don’t feel as though you have to rush through the main quest. Take the time to fully explore an area and discover all the secrets this game has to offer.

Nautiloid Ship
The Nautiloid Ship is essentially the tutorial area of Baldur’s Gate 3, where your character awakens after having been infected with a Mind Flayer tadpole. After you escape your pod you will need to make your way through a series of circular rooms. Along the way, you will meet Lae’zel, interact with Us, and have a chance to save Shadowheart.
The last small room contains a restoration point you’ll want to use before entering the large control room. Here you’ll have to make your way across the large, open space while fighting Lesser Imps and Hellsboar. If you feel up to the challenge, you can try taking down Commander Zhalk to loot the powerful Everburn Blade.

Wyrm’s Crossing
Getting into Wyrm’s Crossing requires you to get past the guards and Steel Watcher blocking the South Span Checkpoint. Pay a bribe to the guard and you will still have to be scanned, and the Steel Watcher will become aggressive. You can fight or agree to be imprisoned (where you can escape).
However, you can instead choose to bypass the guards completely by going to the right/east and looking for some wooden ledges/platforms and a ladder to jump and climb your way into Wyrm’s Crossing.
- Fraygo’s Flophouse
- Sharess’ Caress
- Stylin’ Horst Potion Shop
- Carm’s Garm
- Danthelon’s Dancing Axe
- Wyrm’s Rock Fortress
Baldur’s Gate Lower City
Getting into the Lower City of Baldur’s Gate first requires you to reach Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. This location will not open up for you automatically, but like the South Span Checkpoint, you can bypass the guards by going off to the right. At a point where the balcony railing is broken, use Feather Fall and jump over to the grassy ledges.
Follow the path around the right of the fortress and go inside a crack in the wall. This brings you into the Wyrm’s Rock Prison, where you may have to fight the guards. When you head upstairs a Steel Watcher will stop you. At this point, you’ll be granted permission to stay. However, you will need to attend Gortatsh’s investment ceremony before you are allowed out into the city.
