Many developers, when they get tired of their original formula, opt to reboot their game series and take it in a new direction. While this can either lead to stellar reviews or riots by fans, there is still an objective standard of quality. So, we will be mentioning the 5 best game reboots that completely changed up the format of their respective series.

1. God of War

God of War 2018 completely changed the direction of the series, opting for a new one that was reminiscent of The Last of Us. Although some fans were not pleased, the reboot worked. God of War became the most successful entry into the series yet and allowed Santa Monica Studio more freedom to express their character-writing skills.

While the combat was not the same as it used to be, it is still good. Additionally, Santa Monica Studio took a lot of inspiration from the Souls series in their combat, introducing an emphasis on parrying and dodging while still keeping some of the combos that the series is known for.

2. Assassin’s Creed Origins

After Unity and Syndicate failed to meet Ubisoft’s expectations, they opted for a soft reboot of the series with Assassin’s Creed Origins. In this game, they took a lot of inspiration from The Witcher 3’s mechanics, and it is understandable why. They made Origins a fully open-world game, introduced a bigger focus on skill trees, and added sidequests throughout the open world.

Additionally, they still kept some of the old identity of Assassin’s Creed, allowing players to climb tall buildings and giving a deeper insight into the lore of the Assassin Brotherhood.

3. Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat’s reboot, also called Mortal Kombat 9, took the franchise’s story back to Mortal Kombat 1. Their addition of some new plot twists into the story led to the game being celebrated by all Mortal Kombat fans. Additionally, players also loved the game mechanically. However, the highlight of the game has to be the two guest characters.

Freddy Krueger and Kratos made it to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, respectively. Also, it can be argued that Mortal Kombat popularized the tradition of adding guest characters.

4. DmC: Devil May Cry

The most controversial entry on this list, DmC: Devil May Cry, was hated by fans of the series. However, this does not make it a bad game by any means. Even the fans who disliked this game agree on one thing. They agree on the fact that the combat in this game is absolutely phenomenal. Additionally, it can be argued that DmC had combat that could stand toe-to-toe with DMC4.

What made fans dislike this game is the portrayal of the characters, which is widely agreed upon to be lacking. However, if that is ignored, then the game is definitely one of the best action games out there.

5. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

It is not a far-fetched thing to say that Resident Evil 7 revitalized the series and brought it back. After the lackluster performance of Resident Evil 6, fans waited five years for Capcom to make a new mainline entry. And when they did make one, they made it count. It is clear that they took a lot of inspiration from Hideo Kojima’s Silent Hills, as they opted for a first-person POV. Additionally, they placed more emphasis on indoor settings and a creepy atmosphere compared to the action-heavy settings of previous entries.
