You will have to capture monsters during certain missions, and this article explains how you can do it in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Although killing monsters might be your flair in Monster Hunter Wilds, there are times when you will need to capture them as well. In particular, you will need to capture a rather annoying monster just before unlocking HR in the game. Generally, this is an easy process, although you need to carry a specific item.
In this article, we will explain how you can easily capture monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds. Generally, this is easier than killing a monster, although there is a particular series of tasks that you need to follow.
Steps to Capture Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds
You will need to weaken a monster and then use a Tranq Bomb to capture it in Monster Hunter Wilds. As such, it is necessary that you always carry Tranq Bombs on your Hunter.
Follow these steps to easily capture monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Fight and weaken the monster till the skull icon appears on their icon on the map.
- Place a trap to immobilize the monster.
- Use Tranq Bombs, Tranq Ammo, or Tranq Blades to make it fall asleep and capture it.
Here is a detailed explanation of each process:
1) Fight And Weaken The Monster

The first step to capturing a monster is to weaken it. To do this, you will have to fight the monster normally for the first (or maybe second and third, depending on your weapon and level) phase. Try not to use any of the traps that you carry. In case you are doing it in multiplayer, ensure that at least one player has all of their traps unused.
Keep fighting the monster till it is sufficiently weakened, and the skull icon appears beside its icon on the map. This icon is a visual indicator that the monster can now be captured.
2) Place a Trap to Immobilize The Monster

After the skull icon appears, place a trap that can immobilize the monsters. The traps that work exceptionally well include:
- Shock Trap
- Pitfall Trap
After placing the trap, your next job is to lure the monster towards it. You can do this by using a Lure Pod, or you can also force its aggro and manually lure it to the trap. When the monster has activated the trap, it will be immobilized, and you are now ready to capture it in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Some particular monsters are immune to certain traps, so you need to be careful of that. In particular, the element of the monster should be a good indicator for this. Here are the trap immunities of some large monsters:
Monster | Trap Immunity |
---|---|
Rey Dau | Immune to Shock Traps |
Gypceros | Immune to Shock Traps |
Jin Dahaad | Immune to Pitfall Traps |
Zoh Shia | Immune to both Shock and Pitfall Traps |
3) Use Tranq Bombs, Tranq Ammo or Tranq Blades

When the monster is immobilized because of your trap, you have a small window to capture it. To do this, you will need to use the Tranq Bombs or Tranq Blades. Depending on which tranquilizing agent you use, the process will be different.
Open your Item Pouch and choose the Tranq Bombs or Tranq Blades. These are throwable items and can be used either as throwables or with the slinger. If you are using the Tranq Blades, you will have to equip it on your slinger and shoot from afar. On the other hand, you will need to be right beside the monster to use Tranq Bombs. If you are using a Light Bowgun or a Heavy Bowgun, you can also use the Tranq Ammo to make the monster fall asleep.
Using two Tranq Bombs is an instant capture in Monster Hunter Wilds. Once the monster is asleep, it automatically counts as a capture in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Note: In some cases, you might also receive EZ Tranq Bomb on your Seikret Item Box. These are mostly offered to you during specific quests that require you to capture monsters and not kill them. If you do receive this item, Alma will notify you to check the Item Box for added resources. EZ Tranq Bombs are more powerful and effective when compared to their normal variants, but they cannot be crafted.
Why Should You Capture Monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds?
It is generally better and easier to capture in Monster Hunter Wilds, and here’s why you should do it:
- Capturing monsters can sometimes give you more loot. This increases your chances of getting valuable and rare items.
- When you capture monsters, you automatically reduce the duration of the fight since you do not have to kill it.
- You do not have to carve out materials from the monster’s carcass. Instead, you get the loot right away without any additional action.
Since capturing does away with the carving process altogether, you will not get any items that are carve-specific. If you want to farm for these items specifically, then you will, unfortunately, need to kill it. Check your Monster Field Guide to check which items are carve-specific.
