Nu Udra is one of the most difficult monsters to fight in the second chapter of Monster Hunter Wilds. This beast is a Cephalopod and is introduced to the franchise in MHW itself. Having several slimy tentacles allows it to move much more freely compared to other monsters on the roster. This battle becomes increasingly satisfying because Nu Udra presents a real challenge for all hardcore Monster Hunter fans.

Nu Udra Overview

Nu Udra is one of the weirdest creatures you will encounter while playing MH Wilds. The primary reason is its appearance. While most wyverns look similar to some old designs from this CAPCOM video game series, Nu Udra oozes creativity. Its gooey texture gives us the creeps, and the many tentacles also make its attacks erratic.

You will find that, for the most part, Nu Udra relies on physical damage. However, it can also tap into the Fire element and wreak havoc everywhere in the arena. So, it becomes important that you pick the best gear and find all its weaknesses before jumping into the battle.

Nu Udra has no predators except the Hunters because they are the Apex Predator of the Oilwell Basin region. Fortunately, you cannot miss your fight against the Cephalopod because it is part of the primary questline. In Chapter 2, when you are playing through the Long Forgotten Flame main quest, you will eventually stumble upon the task of defeating this slippery giant.

While it is the Apex Predator of the Basin biome, it is not omnipresent. In fact, it is in hiding, and you must track it down. You will eventually visit the underground section of the biome, where Nu Udra will be hanging out. Now, you can freely disturb its peace and hunt down the monster carefully. This biome is also home to Ajarakan and Rompopolo.

Nu Udra Weaknesses

Nu Udra’s Elemental Weakness

  • Water-type Damage

Since Nu Udra has a Fire affiliation that it uses when it’s enraged, it is pretty much immune to Fire-type damage. So, our best way of approaching this situation is by using the Water element to deal more effective damage.

Nu Udra’s Weak Points

Since Nu Udra is a Cephalopod, it is difficult to distinguish between its body parts. Hence, it becomes difficult to target weak points. However, if you look closely, you will find that there are a few sections of the body that you can try to target for better results during the fight. We suggest that you focus on attacking the mouth, head, and torso. Attacking them will help you land critical hits, but you should be patient enough for an opening. The membrane and the tentacles are two sections of the monster’s body that don’t take a lot of damage. So, only attack them when you are out of options and/or believe it is worth the risk to go in for an attack.

Irrespective of its Apex Predator status, the Cephalopod is weak against slash and bludgeon damage. So, we will try selecting weapons for the fight that can exploit this weakness in the best way possible. Based on your playstyle, you can take Dual Swords, Great Sword, Hammer, and Gunlance on the mission.

Without a doubt, the Dual Swords category of weapons has impressive speed that lets you go in and out of combat quickly. This will be a good pick against Nu Udra, considering how unpredictable its moveset is. However, if you are confident enough, you can also pick the Great Sword or Hammer. Despite being slower than Dual Swords, they deliver good damage if you get used to their attack buildup animations. Lastly, a Gunlance will be useful for letting you shoot from a distance whenever it is too risky to get in for an attack.

Items To Carry for the Battle

The following items will let you get done with the fight comparatively easier:

  • Puddle Pods
  • Water Ammo
  • Wild Herb
  • Cool Drinks
  • Mega Potions
  • Nulberries

The fight will start with Nu Udra dealing only physical damage to the Hunter. So, it will heavily rely on its tentacles for the same. They are quick and also quite numerous. So, it can be unpredictable what attack will come your way and from where. It has an attack where it swiftly slaps one front tentacle on the ground, followed by another. Another physical attack is when it extends its body upwards and slams itself on the ground. Usually, it will get tired after two slams.

Another phase of this fight is when Nu Udra raises two tentacles, entangles them in the air, and lights itself up in flames like some wizard. Now, its attacks will also include waves of fire to overwhelm you.

Tips To Defeat Nu Udra

Here are some tips to help you defeat the octopus-like creature:

  • Try evading the attacks by learning the attack pattern.
  • Stay patient and don’t attack when your gut says there is no time room left.
  • When it stretches its body upwards, clear out. Stay at a decent distance so you can swoop in once it gets tired of the slams.
  • When it prepares for physical attacks, stay back and use your Gunlance if you have it equipped.
  • If it is possible for you, douse the flames with Water projectiles to weaken Nu Udra.
  • Keep an eye on your Cool Drinks and Nulberries and use them whenever you need them.
