Discover the 5 greatest Souls bosses of all time with our ranking, based on multiple playthroughs and years of experience.

Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Souls games are known for many things, such as the crushing difficulty, gorgeous level design, and mysterious lore. However, the highlight of his games is always the boss battles. The best fights are incredibly well-designed, have a lot of impact on the story, and are overall very memorable.
However, out of all the bosses, we will be taking a look at 5 of the greatest souls bosses of all time in our list.
5. Messmer, The Impaler

We’ve long been teased about the demigod that Queen Marika rejected in Elden Ring. At first, we thought it was Godwyn after he was killed. However, Shadow of the Erdtree quickly nullified these theories after being introduced to Messmer, The Impaler. Messmer is one of the hardest bosses in Elden Ring, due to his quick moves, alongside fire-based spells.
In his second phase, he shows his true form as a Serpent, further adding to the difficulty and spectacle of the fight.
4. Isshin, The Sword Saint

Isshin Ashina was like a mentor to Sekiro. This is why the final fight against the Sword Saint is so impactful. Isshin is a whopping four-phase fight, with each phase adding additional attacks into the mix. The fight also takes place in one of the most beautiful arenas of any Souls game, further adding to the glory of this fight. The ending to this boss fight further enhances it, as Isshin asks Sekiro to end his life in one fell swoop after his defeat and commends him.
3. Ludwig, The Holy Blade

Similar to Messmer, we heard many tales about Ludwig from item descriptions in Bloodborne. It wasn’t until The Old Hunters dropped that we finally got to meet him face to face. At first, we were misled, as Ludwig was just a mindless beast and fought in such a way. However, as soon as phase two started, he utilized the Moonlight Greatsword and acted like he was described in the item descriptions.
This second phase also has one of the greatest musical scores in a Souls game yet, further adding to this fight’s legacy.
2. Slave Knight Gael

Featured in The Ringed City, Slave Knight Gael is the final boss of the Dark Souls series itself. We were first introduced to him in Ashes of Ariandel as an NPC who got us inside the first DLC area. Afterward, we meet him in The Ringed City, at the end of the world itself, as a boss. We fight while lightning strikes in a desolate, dead world for the blood of the dark soul.
In addition, he is heavily inspired by Guts from Berserk, making him a perfect sendoff to the Dark Souls series as a whole.
1. Soul of Cinder

The final boss of Dark Souls 3, the Soul of Cinder, is located at the Dreg Heap. The area itself is a literal mix of all places from the Dark Souls series. In addition, The Soul of Cinder is also a mix of everyone who ever linked the fire, including The Chosen Undead and Lord Gwyn from Dark Souls 1. These factors are reflected in the boss moveset, as it uses the undead’s moveset in the first phase.
In the second phase, he uses all of Lord Gwyn’s attacks, alongside his theme as well. All of these factors make this fight a love letter to each Dark Souls fan and the best Souls fight of all time.
