Some games tend to receive a lot more praise than they actually deserve. While these are great games and deserve to be admired, calling each one of them the best game ever made is taking it a touch too far.

So, here are the 5 most overrated games of all time that fans celebrated and praised a bit too much for what was actually warranted.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2

Don’t get me wrong, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a fantastic video game. The story and characters are all incredible, and the game looks gorgeous. However, is it the best video game of all time? I find it hard to agree. The game does have some clear flaws with its pacing, and the forced realism can be very tedious sometimes.

A game should prioritize fun above all else, and when the added realism becomes tedious instead of fun, that is when it becomes problematic. I remember when I was ambushed by some bandits while riding my horse. Although I managed to fend them off, my steed, however, was gravely injured. So, I spent 5 minutes just walking to the nearest town to fetch some medicine. While this experience does sound intriguing, it definitely was not fun to play.

2. Grand Theft Auto V

While Grand Theft Auto V does not have any gameplay mechanics that feel tedious, I believe that it is still very overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it is a fantastic game with one of the most vibrant and alive worlds out there. However, my issue is with how the main campaign is handled. It either involves driving somewhere, shooting someone, or worse yet, piloting a crane.

The crane part made me realize that there is a problem with Rockstar’s mission design; it could stand to be a bit more fun. This is one thing I believe that Red Dead Redemption 2 did better than GTA V. In that game, the missions were more fun as the game featured much better exploration, both indoors and outdoors.

3. The Last of Us

Easily the most overrated game on this list, I don’t understand what the hype behind The Last of Us is. Sure, the story is great, but is that all we look at these days? While this opinion could easily get me crucified, I believe that the game’s combat system and overall gameplay experience were just alright. While it may be an unfair comparison, playing the Uncharted games definitely spoiled me with how much more fun the gameplay experience in them was.

I understand that The Last of Us is a horror game, so it cannot be action-packed like the Uncharted games. However, people saying that this game saved gaming as a whole from stagnation is a bit too far, personally.

4. God of War

I am one of those people who believe that the Greek Saga God of War games were much more fun than the Norse ones. The reason is that the combat system in the previous games had a lot more depth, as jumping allowed for some spectacular combos. In addition, the bosses and set pieces are also beyond anything that the Norse games provide.

Many people argue that the reboot made Kratos an actual character, which I find to be a big disservice to the Greek games. I truly believe that the current Kratos story would not work if the Greek-era Kratos and his misguided lust for vengeance did not exist.

5. Dark Souls

We have arrived at what is arguably the most controversial entry on the list. Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Dark Souls indeed accomplished a lot in the industry, spawning a whole genre of Soulslikes. However, if we take a look at the game without any bias, we will see many flaws. For example, the game’s combat system is full of bugs and glitches, such as the Backstab mechanic.

The worst part of all is the rushed areas, such as Lost Izalith, which dampen the experience. In my opinion, it is clear to see that the game drops off in quality after Anor Londo. But, despite all these flaws, the game is still amazing, and its legacy cannot be denied.
