Legacy of Vaal is a lengthy quest in Path of Exile 2 that may require some assistance. Read along to guide yourself through it.
Legacy of Vaal is a long quest that you can start immediately after the cutscene at the beginning of Act 3. Talk to The Hooded One once you have successfully been teleported to Sandswept Marsh.
You will later find yourself in the Ziggurat Encampment. It is a hidden pathway in the Marsh which is marked by lit torches along a stone path. After entering, find Alva and Oswald near the entrance. Later, the game’s objective will guide you back to The Hooded One. This is where the quest really kicks off.
Now, you must make your way to the Jungle Ruins in search of the Matlan Waterways. It’s a path filled with dangerous enemies. You can skip all of them and make a dash to the next region until you reach the Chimeral Wetlands. We suggest that you explore the outskirts of this region first because once you move inwards, you will be greeted by Xyclucian, the Chimera.
Defeating the elemental beast becomes your primary objective. Once done, access Jiquani’s Machinarium located nearby.
Finding the Soul Cores
Small Soul Core
Once you enter the Machinarium, you will find Alva again by a Stone Altar. You both need a Small Soul Core. It is located all the way left from the Altar. As you start heading left, keep the hologram map open. When you see the green exclamation mark, you will know that’s where the Soul Core is.
Be careful, because right outside the room containing the core, a Stone Sentinel is in his slumber. So, you will have to defeat it either before or after getting the core. Once you have it, interact with the Stone Altar and it will awaken two more Stone Sentinels and a Rotted Rat of the Blur.
Defeat them and make your way deeper into the Machinarium. Keep following the red line on the ground if you wish to reach the objective. There are many rooms with some loot. You may also want to stray from your path a little at times. Beware of the enemies, though. Once you reach the end of the line, there will be another Stone Altar to interact. Do so, and the two Stone Sentinels beside it will awaken.
You can skip them and dash inside until you can head into the next area and let your friends spawn there with you, avoiding all conflict.
2 Medium Soul Cores and 1 Large Soul Core
Once you have exited the Machinarium, you will have arrived at Jiquani’s Sanctum. Open the waypoint to reach the Grand Soul Core Nexus. Talk to Alva again here.
There are two generators in the area, the two Medium Soul Cores are close to them. All you have to do is keep your waypoint open so you can detect the green exclamation marks. Each one needs to be placed on the generators near the two checkpoints. They look like small stone arch bridges.
Once done, head back to where Alva was and interact once more. This is when Zicoatl Warden of the Core spawns in the area. You must defeat it to take the Large Soul Core. You can now exit and return to the Infested Barrens to activate the Stone Altar outdoors using the Large Soul Core.

Matlan Waterways
Once you enter the Matlan Waterways during the Legacy of Vaal quest, your primary quest will be to turn the Control Levers. 6 small ones are found near canal walls while 1 big one is on the far side of the area.
Pulling all of them will trigger a brief cutscene showing that the water around the Ziggurat Encampment is draining. Now, you must return to the camp.
Returning will cause you to meet Alva again and you can then proceed to The Drowned City.
The Drowned City in Legacy of Vaal
The Drowned City will lead you to the Apex of Filth. Finding the Stenchpools area here will put you face-to-face against the Queen of Filth. She is quite slow but can use slams and rolls to hurt you. Be mindful of her attacks while fighting.
Defeating her is essential to progressing as she drops a Temple Door Idol that you need to pick up and return to Alva at the camp again. You can now visit the Temple of Kopec. You can take one of the two flights of stairs to get to the Altar of the Sun. There will be enemies in your way anyhow.
Ketzuli, High Priest of the Sun will be here to attack you with big AoE spells and other fire abilities. You can then talk to Alva and ride the elevator soon after and you will be back at Ziggurat. A gateway will have opened up, enter it.
You then have to explore Utzaal and find the Legion Blockade located near a checkpoint. The next phase of this quest includes two boss fights.

Discovering the Legacy of Vaal
While you are exploring Utzaal, Alva will try to talk to Viper Napuatzi but will instead get knocked out. This will eventually trigger a fight between you and Viper. This foe is quick and will use quick slashes, dashes, and AoE slams on you. If you manage to defeat him, you will have to fight against several Viper Legionnaires, so be prepared.
Near your fight location is a giant staircase leading to Aggorat. Enter it and fight through waves of enemies inside until you find The Black Chambers. These are located on the outer edges of Aggorat, and you will first notice an isolated hall to mark the entrance.
The entrance to The Black Chambers has a checkpoint nearby. Open the waypoint and look for it. The Testing Pit should be nearby, where you will find Doryani and Doryani’s Triumph.
Doryani has a variety of ranged spells. If you manage to get him low on health, he will use Doryani’s Triumph to attack you. However, once you defeat him, talk to him. An open gateway will then get you back to Ziggurat. This marks the end of the Legacy of Vaal quest.
