Let’s take a look at the Magic Knight ranks along with the recruitment system in place for the safety of the kingdom.
Black Clover is set in a world where magic is the norm and people live in kingdoms ruled by the Wizard King. Each kingdom’s power and worth are determined by how strong their mages are. This is why the Clover Kingdom has a program in place to recruit mages in order to take on any entity that threatens the peace of the kingdom. These mages are called Magic Knights, and they have ranks within the group. The ranks are given based on the Magic Knights’ combat abilities.
The Magic Knight rankings were introduced during the earlier stages of the series. They were a core part of the kingdom, and Asta signed up for the test to join them. He stood out because of his perseverance and managed to use a portion of his Anti-Magic abilities. Yami Sukehiro scouted him.
This was when Black Clover introduced the concept of squads. Now that we have established the hierarchy of the mages in this series, let’s take a look at all the ranks and understand the bifurcation of the mages.
Magic Knights Ranking in Black Clover
A hierarchy exists within the Clover Kingdom. The hierarchy in question is built around the mage’s combat abilities. The Wizard King is the highest-ranked mage in the entire kingdom. He is the most powerful mage and controls the defenses and the well-being of the kingdom. The Wizard King is as important as the King. Their job is to set up a system that recruits some of the strongest mages to join the army. If any entity threatens the peace of the kingdom, it is the Wizard King’s job to either delegate or enter the battlefield and neutralize the enemy.
Following this, we have the Grand Magic Knights. All squad captains fall under this category. Yami Sukehiro, Yuno Grinberryall, Nozel Silva, Charlotte Roselei, Fuegoleon Vermillion, Jack the Ripper, Dorothy Unsworth, Kaiser Unvorka, and Rill Boismorier are all Grand Magic Knights.
Following this, we have three more categories in descending order – Senior Magic Knight, Intermediate Magic Knight, and Junior Magic Knight. Each category is further split into five classes – class 5 being the weakest and class 1 being the strongest. This is the power ladder that each mage has to climb in order to become the Wizard King.
Who Is the Wizard King in the Clover Kingdom
Julius Novachrono is the Wizard King in the Clover Kingdom. He is the most powerful mage who has the ability to manipulate time. This is why there are very few who can even rival Julius in the series. He also happens to be an Arcane Mage, which means his magic doesn’t follow the conventions of magic seen in the real world. This type of magic is effective in defeating devils. The reason why Julius Novachrono can manipulate time is that he is a devil host. There exist two souls in that body. The other soul happens to be a devil host.
Julius Novachrono can literally speed up, stop, accelerate, or reverse the flow of time. Julius Novachrono hosts the devil Astaroth. He is the strongest devil in the Tree of Qliphoth. He was so powerful that he quite literally managed to revive after his death. Initially, his Grimoire was massive and had no cover. It had countless pages of spells which was later reduced to just one. This happened due to his revival in the Black Clover series.
Fans who haven’t read the manga don’t know that he is a devil host and that Lucius Zogratis resides in his body. Lucius is the prime antagonist in the series who plans on taking over the world and killing everyone in it.
How Many Magic Knights Squads Exist in Black Clover
There are 9 Magic Knight Squads in total. Each of these squads has a captain and a base. There are several members with varying magic abilities, all intending to collect as many stars as they can. To boost the mage’s activities, the squads enter into a competition. Each squad attempts to bring in as many stars as they can. The stars are awarded for their exemplary work as mages when it comes to protecting their kingdom.
The winner of this competition is announced by the Wizard King himself. The nine squads in no particular order are: Black Bulls, Golden Dawn, Silver Eagle, Blue Rose, Crimson Lion, Green Mantis, Coral Peacock, Purple Orca, and Aqua Deer. Each squad has its own insignia. The captain can alter a small portion of the insignia or the name in the Black Clover series. These squads collectively make up the entirety of the Magic Knights, and they are instrumental in maintaining the defenses of the kingdom.
What Is the Strongest Squad in Black Clover
Those who have watched the anime might believe that Golden Dawn is the strongest squad. However, that is not the case, despite winning during the Star Awards Ceremony. Black Bulls is the strongest squad in Black Clover. This squad has two characters who are hosts to devils. Asta is Liebe’s host while Nacht Faust is the host to four mid-level devils – Gimodelo, Soltos, Plumede, and Walgner.
Yami Sukehiro also has access to Dark Magic, which is incredibly powerful. This squad has some of the most powerful mages in the entire kingdom. Whereas Golden Dawn relies on numbers and Yuno Grinberryall. He is an incredibly powerful mage capable of becoming the Wizard King one day. However, this squad lacks the number of Arcane mages and devil hosts that the Black Bulls do.
Conclusion
There are 5 main ranks within the kingdom – The Wizard King, Grand Wizard Knights, Senior Magic Knight, Intermediate Magic Knights, and Junior Magic Knights. The last three categories are further split into five levels, the fifth being the weakest and the first being the strongest. The Magic Knights are split into squads, each led by a captain. The squads attempt to accumulate the most amount of stars in an attempt to make a name for themselves. The winner also receives other perks which could be monetary in nature.
