Among this plethora of individuals, Urouge is one of the most enigmatic and intriguing additions. His presence sticks out due to his distinctive personality, balancing out his lack of screen time. So, who is Urouge in One Piece?
Urouge is a member of the Worst Generation of Pirates and captain of the Fallen Monk Pirates. He is a side character who greatly contributes to the narrative in One Piece. Let us take a closer look at him.
Who Is Urouge in One Piece?
Known as the Mad Monk, Urouge is a pirate who comes from an unnamed location in Sky Island. He is mostly memorable for fans since the smile on his face never disappears. Regardless of whether he is happy or in the face of defeat, he gives the impression of everlasting joviality.
However, despite his smile, his true feelings are still conveyed. This was best seen when he appeared to be shaken after hearing of Ace’s death sentence. Urouge embodies the spirit of piracy, as he values personal freedom and bravery. He does not shy away from danger and is willing to put his life on the line.
Urouge is particularly notable since he is the only member of the Worst Generation with an unnamed Devil Fruit who is yet to meet Luffy. Although his bounty is lower compared to his peers, fans widely recognize him for his exploits in the series.
Urouge’s Major Appearances in One Piece
Urouge’s presence in One Piece has been sparse but meaningful. His most notable ones include:
- Sabaody Archipelago Arc:
Urouge fought Killer in this arc before being stopped by X Drake. Later, when a World Noble appeared, he showed his distaste but still complied with orders to show respect. When Zoro attempted to kill one of them, he showed his appreciation for the swordsman.
In the same setting, a Pacifista confronted Urouge before throwing him in front of Kizaru. While he had his hands full with the Pacifista itself, the Admiral’s powerful attack knocked the pirate away. However, as Hawkins had predicted, Urouge could escape with his life.
- Marineford Arc:
During the Marineford War, Urouge witnessed the broadcast of Ace’s death. Following this, he travelled to the New World to Raijin Island.
- Timeskip:
Urouge’s major accomplishment in One Piece came when he defeated one of Big Mom’s commanders – Charlotte Snack. Cracker later defeated him, but he managed to escape with his life.
- Dressrosa Arc:
Urouge’s ideology is perfectly shown in the Dressrosa Arc, where he travelled to a Sky Island named Ballon Terminal to nurse his wounds. Here, he met Kaido, who wished to jump to his death. Rather than stop him, Urouge respected his wishes and prayed for the Emperor.
- One Piece: Stampede
One Piece: Stampede is technically non-canon to the main storyline, but it still gives us a lot of focus on Urouge. The pirate and his crew took part in the treasure race for Gol D. Roger’s riches. His competition with other Worst Generation members was brought to a halt when Douglas Bullet interrupted the race.
While the pirates put up a valiant fight against the antagonist, they were ultimately defeated. Following Luffy’s victory, he and the other crews could escape a Marine attempt to capture them.
Urouge’s Strengths and Abilities
Urouge does not have too many battles in One Piece, but he is a very proficient fighter. He may not be a match for Admirals, but he still had a bounty of 108,000,000 berries before reaching Sabaody. This speaks volumes of how threatening he is considered to be in One Piece.
The Mad Monk is extremely strong and deceptively fast, being able to keep up with Killer’s powerful attacks. His Devil Fruit is not revealed, but it is a Paramecia-type that can convert damage dealt on him into strength. This assisted his efforts against the Pacifista. This is paired with his main move, the Inga Zarashi, a destructive barrage of powerful punches.
Urouge has grown in strength throughout the series since he is one of the few who was able to defeat a commander of Big Mom, who had a 600,000,000 berry bounty.
How Does Urouge Compare to Other Members of the Worst Generation?
The Worst Generation refers to 12 infamous rookies in One Piece known for their crimes against the World Government and bold actions. Their appearance signalled the beginning of the New Age of Piracy.
The most notable members of this are Luffy, Zoro, Blackbeard, Kid, and Law, each of whom has the most screen time in One Piece. Hence, Urouge, who is also part of this group, unfortunately, pales in comparison to their significance and strength.
At the same time, he is far from weak, being much stronger than the likes of Apoo, Hawkins, and Bege. Going past just strength, Urouge is still one of the least explored characters of the Worst Generation. Even a seemingly less important character such as Bonney got her moment to shine in the Egghead Arc.
Comparatively, Urouge only serves a supporting role in most arcs, hardly ever coming into contact with the main character. This is hugely disappointing for fans who have been taken in by the pirate’s calm demeanor and unique powers. Now that we have entered the Final Saga of One Piece, fans will undoubtedly be expecting more insight into him.
