Learn whether Monster Hunter Wilds will feature the Follower Quests from Sunbreak, or if it will have something new to offer.
The Follower Quests in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is easily one of the major highlights of the expansion. The general premise of the Follower Quests is quite simple. You basically need to complete specific quests (requests) for an NPC to unlock them for any future hunting quests. However, despite its simplicity, the Follower Quests became a fan-favorite mechanic from Sunbreak, especially among solo players.
These quests allowed players to enjoy the fun of co-op in Monster Hunter, without having to connect to the internet. And given the mechanic’s popularity, it’s among the most-requested features for the upcoming Monster Hunter title, Monster Hunter Wilds.
Surprisingly enough, Capcom is bringing back the Follower Quests feature to Monster Hunter Wilds, albeit with slight changes. Here’s everything you need to know about the Follower Quests in Monster Hunter Wilds, and how they’re going to differ from Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.
What Are the Follower Quests in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
The Follower Quests are special hunting requests that unlock as you go through the main story in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. After reaching Master Rank 2, you will unlock the Blood Orange Bishaten hunting request. For this hunt, Dane Fiyorane joins the hunter which then subsequently unlocks the Follower Quests. Much like the Special Investigations in Monster Hunter World, the Follower Quests have a separate tab in Sunbreak.
Going through the main story unlocks Follower Requests, which often end up being a hunting quest. After you complete a set amount of these requests, you are given access to those NPCs as your followers for other hunting quests.
Unlocking a Follower via the Support Quests means you can summon them for any of the main story hunting quests. Followers are also available for Expeditions. Furthermore, you can even choose which weapon you want the Follower(s) to bring to the battle. However, there are a few downsides to bringing a Follower to a hunting quest. Firstly, using the Followers system means you cannot summon other online players for that quest. Additionally, since the Followers also bring their Palamutes with them, it can make the hunts feel quite chaotic.
However, the positives of the Follower system outweigh the few shortcomings they have. Unlike in the case of online co-op, bringing Followers to a quest does not add to the monster’s total HP and Defense. The monsters remain scaled for a single hunter, regardless of whether you’re bringing any Followers or not. Furthermore, the Follower NPC AI is quite intelligent, often helping you with Wyvern Riding, passive healing, or even luring other monsters to aid in the hunt.
Follower Quests in Monster Hunter Wilds
Although details are sparse, a mechanic similar to the Follower Quests is available in Monster Hunter Wilds. According to Capcom, Monster Hunter Wilds will feature a dynamic NPC partner system, akin to Sunbreak’s Followers. There are going to be specific quests tied to NPC hunters. Completing these quests will unlock said NPCs as part of the hunting party.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to test the Follower system out for ourselves as it wasn’t included in the recently held Open Beta Playtest. However, few outlets did get their hands on the game’s most recent build, where they got to see the Follower system in action. Details regarding the mechanic are still very limited.
However, Capcom will hopefully reveal more about the Follower system close to the game’s release date. Monster Hunter Wilds is scheduled to be released on February 28, 2025, on all current-gen platforms.
