Hyper Light Breaker is a rogue-like open-world game that throws you into a gorgeous and stylized open world with tons of loot to find and secrets to uncover. The loot and secrets are often guarded by various enemies, all with unique designs and mechanics. While you have the option to use a gun and pick them off from a distance, most enemies are aggressive and will inevitably close in on you.

This range is where things get personal, and you have to rely on melee to survive. Parrying is a major element of your defense at this distance and one you need to master if you wish to survive in the game. If you don’t know how to parry or are curious about the intricacies of this combat mechanic, our guide has you covered. In this guide, we shall go over how to parry in Hyper Light Breaker.

How To Parry?

When you parry, you deflect the enemy’s attack instead of blocking it. To parry, you simply have to press the ‘Parry’ button, and the character will pull out a shield to enact the action. This ‘Parry’ is assigned to Q on PC, B on Xbox, and Circle on PlayStation.

Timing is a crucial part of the parry mechanic. You want to parry when the attack is just about to hit you. Parry too early, and it’s a block. Parry too late, and you’re tempting fate. It takes practice to master the parry timing in the game. Enemies telegraph their attacks by emitting a flash before attacking. Stay on the lookout for the flash and prepare to parry when the attack comes your way.

Keep in mind that parrying does not provide you with i-frames. You can only parry one enemy at a time, and you are vulnerable to the others during this engagement. We do not recommend parrying when overwhelmed by a group. Instead, use the Dash to escape the group and let the enemies file up towards you and deal with them one at a time.

Another thing you need to be wary of is the dog-type enemy. The dogs and their hit detection are currently inconsistent, courtesy of the game being in Early Access. The dogs may deal damage through your parry, leaving you at low health. We recommend dashing away from them instead of attempting to parry until the issue is fixed.
