Phantom Blade Zero, the highly anticipated action game from S-Game, finally got a brand-new trailer. While most games showcase a scripted and highly edited gameplay trailer for their games, S-Game chose a different route.

For their latest gameplay trailer, S-Game chose to showcase an uncut sequence of a boss fight, complete with two phases. The previous few trailers did give a hint at the fast-paced nature of Phantom Blade’s combat. However, the latest gameplay trailer perfectly shows it in action. Unfortunately, S-Game has yet to reveal a confirmed release date. However, the studio did promise something related to that towards the tail-end of the new trailer.

Here’s everything you need to know about Phantom Blade Zero’s latest gameplay trailer, including the new boss fight, weapons, and more.

New Boss Fight

The trailer starts with a short introductory cutscene, giving players a look at a new deserted village-like location. The new trailer perfectly showcases the impressive graphical fidelity of Phantom Blade Zero, and how it utilizes Unreal Engine 5.

Following the cutscene, the trailer quickly transitions into a boss fight against Chief Disciple of the Seven Stars. The boss fight is very reminiscent of Dark Souls 3’s Deacons of the Deep, albeit with some obvious differences. Unlike the Decons, the Chief Disciple of the Seven Stars is a much more active boss fight. Similarly to the Decons, the Chief Disciple also summons clones (minions) during the battle.

However, instead of being a caster with very little in terms of moveset, the main boss is incredibly agile. The trailer also showcases how the combat system in Phantom Blade Zero has received some major updates since its last public showcase. For instance, the game’s melee combat seems to have received a substantial boost in speed. Furthermore, the effects following a parry, or dealing a critical hit, seem to have been made much more prominent.

The combat in Phantom Blade is heavily inspired by “traditional techniques and philosophies of Chinese martial arts.” The new gameplay trailer perfectly showcases how fast-paced and visceral the combat in Phantom Blade Zero can be.

New Weapons and Phantom Edges

The trailer also showcased new weapons as well as Phantom Edges (weapon skills) in action. The new weapons S-Game showcased were the Venomous Softblade as well as the White Python and Red Viper. Both these weapons, albeit showcasing fantastical designs, are based on real-life ancient armaments.

The Venomous Softblade is essentially a parry-focused weapon, which excels at counterattacks and defensive maneuvers. Whereas the White Python and Red Viper are dual-wield weapons that excel at multi-hit combos, akin to the Dual Blades for Monster Hunter games. Both these weapons offer a satisfying and diverse playstyle.

Furthermore, players can switch between different weapon loadouts on the fly. In fact, Phantom Blade Zero’s combat system heavily incentivizes quick weapon switching akin to games like Doom or Devil May Cry. Apart from the new weapons, S-Game also showcased two new Phantom Edges, which are essentially weapon/character abilities. The new Phantom Edges revealed are – the Savage Axe and Ink Cut.

The Phantom Edges are essentially abilities that run on cooldown. Furthermore, these abilities are also based on the Sha-Chi gauge. The Sha-Gi gauge is essentially akin to stamina or Ki gauge in souls-like games. However, instead of limiting basic movement, Sha-Chi primarily dictates the Phantom Edge abilities.

PS5 Performance Improvements

Following the trailer, S-Game also released a press release detailing various elements of the new Year of the Snake trailer. The press release also confirmed that the studio plans to reveal a confirmed release date for the game this year (perhaps during the upcoming Summer Games Fest 2025).

In addition to that, via the press release, S-Game also confirmed that the PS5 version of the game runs “smoothly and stably.” Furthermore, S-Game also revealed that Phantom Blade Zero will ship with PS5 Pro enhancements. However, details regarding the game’s target resolution, framerate, as well as PS5 Pro enhancements are yet to be revealed.

Suffice it to say, Phantom Blade Zero is shaping up to be a fantastic addition to the hack-and-slash and action-RPG genres. And the new trailer for the game perfectly showcases why fans of action games should definitely want to keep an eye out for it.
