A Vanguard’s main role in Marvel Rivals is to tank damage. As expected, they have good HP and somewhat restricted mobility to counter their survivability. They are also not damage dealers like Duelists. Since your primary role as a Vanguard is to hold aggro and divert all enemy attention toward yourself, it is important to pick only the best of them. All Vanguards in the game play differently, but it is not possible to keep everybody in the same tier. So, kindly note that the tier list in question will be highly subjective to the writer’s opinion.

S-Tier: Usually Holding Aggro

  • Characters: Venom, Doctor Strange

The characters on this list are not the typical definition of a “tank”. However, they do have their distinct style that can be very effective when playing a Vanguard and holding aggro. Venom is a diving character, while Doctor Strange is a very strategic Vanguard. Both of them excel in flanking but they implement different tactics.

Venom has great survivability, meaning that he can hold a point for a long time before his team arrives to help. He has a whopping 800 HP that can instead reach over 1000 if he uses his Symbiotic Resilience. Currently, Doctor Strange has the best “shield” on the entire roster. The shield alone has 800 HP. His abilities to open portals also make him a character who can easily turn the tides around.

Their Ultimate Abilities are a bit disappointing. But besides that, I think they are the best Vanguards you can pick in most team comps.

A-Tier: Usually Annoying to Deal With

  • Characters: Peni Parker, Thor, Groot

Here we have two different types of Vanguards. Two hold the point well, while the other is a diving character. Another differentiation between these three characters is the fact that Peni Parker and Groot have ranged primary attacks while Thor is a brawler.

If you are fighting as Peni, make sure that you are holding a point. You don’t need to push too much. Leave that to the other tank in your team. What’s even better is that you can heal yourself if you want! The bionic spider nest is a great Ability at your disposal.

Groot, on the other hand, can create walls to block enemy players from coming in and also use them to inflict more damage or heal himself and his allies.

As for Thor, your primary role is getting in the enemy’s faces. What you would want to do, however, is have a pocket healer with you at all times. Because of his mobility and damage, Thor can be a pretty aggressive tank when played right.

The only problem that both of these characters have is that they can’t “solo queue” in all team comps. They are suitable in certain circumstances that we mentioned above. Peni needs to hold a point while Thor needs a pocket healer most of the time. So, if the objective point is a payload that keeps on moving, Peni Parker won’t be able to use her abilities to their full extent. And if Thor doesn’t have a good healer with him, he will be eliminated pretty quickly.

B-Tier: Something is Off With Them

  • Characters: Captain America, Hulk

Hear me out on this one. Both of these are good Vanguards but as I mentioned above, there is something that feels off. This “something” is different for both of these characters. Captain America and Hulk both are strictly brawler heroes. While Cap can still throw his shield with his ability and by recharging his passive melee attack, Hulk can’t do much in terms of ranged except the Gamma Clap and exiling his enemies.

Captain America has the best mobility among all Vanguards, allowing him to sprint indefinitely. However, his shield isn’t the most resilient. If you don’t have good healers, your Captain America is getting jumped by the enemy team easily.

Hulk, on the other hand, doesn’t have impressive mobility either. Sure, he has the power to leap without cooldowns, but he is often limited with his melee damage. One thing that I appreciate about this character is the fact that whenever Bruce turns into Hulk or Hulk turns into Monster Hulk, they get all of their HP back. This is a great life-saver.

C-Tier: Reserved for Those Who Practiced

  • Characters: Magneto

So far, only Magneto is on this tier. He is placed so low because of Magneto’s complicated gameplay. Unless you have practiced enough, there is no way you can contribute to the match. His primary attack has a very slow rate of fire, and he doesn’t even deal enough damage. Magneto’s other abilities can also put him at a disadvantage.

The only way a Magneto can truly contribute as a Vanguard on the team is if the rest of the team holds aggro while he defends them using his shields and deals secondary damage with his offensive abilities. This means if the team dies, he won’t be of much use at all. Out of everything, his movement is the worst out of all of the tanks in the game.
