Learn how to play as the Winter Soldier effectively in Marvel Rivals and run down your enemies with the help of this simple guide.
Winter Soldier is one of the best Duelists in Marvel Rivals. NetEase Games had to nerf him by giving him only three bullets in his primary magazine. Despite this, he is still a pretty formidable opponent to face on any map/mode. However, if you don’t know how to play your cards right, you are going to lose no matter what. This is what we are here to change.
Winter Soldier Marvel Rivals Ability Kit
ABILITIES | EFFECT |
Roterstern (Primary) | Fire explosive rounds with his blaster, Roterstern, damaging the target hit and enemies behind them. |
Kraken Impact (Ultimate Ability) | Leap high, then dash forward and slam down with the bionic arm, dealing damage to enemies in range, marking them for Culling. Marked enemies will perish instantly if their health falls below a certain threshold, recharging the bionic arm for another Kraken Impact within a short period. |
Trooper’s Fist | Dash forward, seizing enemies along the path and launching up enemies at the end of the dash. |
Tainted Voltage | Charge up and launch a powerful electrical punch with the bionic arm in the target direction, dealing damage to enemies within range and Slowing them. This ability can Knock Down flying heroes. |
Bionic Hook | Charge up and launch a hook with his bionic arm, reeling in the first target hit and enemies lurking behind. |
Ceaseless Charge (Passive) | Roterstern reloads automatically while the bionic arm is in action, granting Bonus Health to the Winter Soldier. |
Infinite Grit (Team-up Ability) | Rocket Raccoon throws an Ammo Overload device in the target direction. Upon entering the device’s range, the Punisher and Winter Soldier receive the buffs of Infinite Ammo and Faster Firing. |
How To Play Winter Soldier in Marvel Rivals?
Winter Soldier’s Mobility
Bucky is not new to fighting. So, NetEase Games gave him optimal mobility. He is not as quick and agile as Black Panther or Spider-Man, but he is also not as slow as most of the Vanguards on the roster. He can get out of AoE attacks and get in cover fairly quickly if you couple his movements with a few jumps.
One way players can move “faster” as the Winter Soldier is if they use his Trooper’s Fist (uppercut) Ability. This is because the uppercut begins after a dash. In fact, the uppercut itself makes him move further away from the point where he started this move. So, if you need to get to a point during Overtime, make sure you spam this Ability as much as possible.
Winter Soldier’s Survivability
Much like some other regular Duelists and Strategists, Bucky also has a moderate HP bar. You will find that he has a max HP of 275. This doesn’t typically make him a “squishy character,” so you don’t have to worry about getting one shot by Hawkeye or Black Widow. However, you should also be cautious when facing the enemy team because you can’t tank damage.
If you ever find yourself at death’s door, make sure to use your bionic arm’s abilities. These will grant you some additional HP for a time being, hopefully providing enough room for you to finish that stressful 1v1, get to a Health Pack, or wait for the healers to assist you.
Winter Soldier Playstyle and Combos
Fearing the destruction he could bring, NetEase Games limited the ammo that Winter Soldier has on him. Unfortunately, he can only shoot thrice before needing to reload. We are not even counting the times you might miss your shot because of a moving target or lack of focus. So, chances are, you might not be able to finish your target by emptying your magazine only once. This is where his bionic arm comes into play.
You can use his bionic arm Abilities to give yourself some extra HP that helps in that 1v1 while also automatically reloading the weapon. This means that once you empty your mag, hit a bionic arm Ability, empty the mag again, and hit another bionic arm Ability, it will help you take down the enemy in most of the cases. Since there are two major bionic arm Abilities, Trooper’s Fist and Tainted Voltage, you can swap and place them in the combo we mentioned above. This is a pretty straightforward playstyle where you hold the frontline or push into enemy territory. This can work even better if Rocket Raccoon can provide you with unlimited ammo.
Winter Soldier can also become an “abductor.” He can use his Bionic Hook to snatch an enemy target (or multiple of them) and bring them into your own team area for a massacre. If you used your Bionic Hook to pull enemies closer only to use your Trooper’s Fist in the same direction, you are doing it wrong. Next time, use the hook to bring the enemy(s) close, quickly turn your camera around, and use your uppercut. This will bring them into your own territory where your teammates can end the game.
Best Team Composition With Winter Soldier in Marvel Rivals
ROLE | CHARACTERS |
Vanguard | Doctor Strange, Captain America |
Duelist | Iron Fist/Spider-Man |
Strategists | Rocket Raccoon/Loki |
Since Winter Soldier is vulnerable when shooting, he can stay right behind Doctor Strange while the latter activates his shield to protect him and the Strategists in the back. Captain America can instead dive behind enemy lines and hold aggro for the most part, dealing damage to enemy Duelists and Strategists.
Bucky will stay right behind Doc. This means that he can’t take out enemy healers. So, Iron Fist and Spider-Man will have to do the fun part of the job and take on the vulnerable enemy Strategists in the backline while Winter Soldier deals damage to Vanguards and charging Duelists.
Rocket Raccoon can provide infinite ammo, allowing Bucky to shoot for a decent amount of time without having to reload. He can also heal the diving Duelist and Vanguard from a distance with his healing orbs. As for Loki, he can stay with the Winter Soldier and deal damage to enemies when not healing. Another benefit of this comp is that Loki can acquire Winter Soldier’s form and use his “Armed and Dangerous!” to terrorize enemies in sync with this scary Ultimate Ability.
Winter Soldier Counters in Marvel Rivals
His role is as a poking character that deals decent ranged damage. He is vulnerable to diving and brawling characters for the most part. The following characters can put Winter Soldier in danger:
- Iron Fist
- Black Panther
- Wolverine
- Spider-Man
- Thor
- Venom
- Hulk
You can surely use more characters to counter him. All of it is based on how you play that particular character. However, if any of these heroes arrive at his doorstep, the Winter Soldier won’t be able to do much against them. Given his mobility, he also won’t be able to outrun them.
Tips and Tricks To Play Winter Soldier in Marvel Rivals
We have mostly covered all the tips while discovering how to play effectively and what combos to use for Winter Soldier, but there are a few things that we may have missed that you should know of:
- Remember the combo that automatically reloads your Roterstern. So, make sure that you put one of the bionic arm abilities in the middle of each reload. Using one bionic arm Ability will help you utilize your skill set judiciously, and you will not run out of moves when you need them the most.
- Make sure to use your Bionic Hook to reel in enemies and push them in your territory instead of sending them back. Use that Trooper’s Fist after you turn 180 degrees on the spot.
- Wait until all your teammates are close to, or already at the place where you need to hit your Kraken Impact. This will allow your enemies to lend supporting fire and help recharge the second round of your Ultimate Ability for that sweet-sounding “Again!”
- Lastly, I advice you to stick with Rocket Raccoon. He might not be able to follow you around but if you are nearby, you can pull up close to him and get that unlimited ammo that can help you hold aggro.
