Civilization 7 puts your mind to the test by putting you in charge of building an everlasting empire. There are several challenges and hurdles along the way that test your critical thinking and adaptability. The AI in the game is a fair challenge on all difficulties but may get a little predictable once you’ve reached a certain skill level. This is where Civilization 7’s extensive multiplayer comes into play.

Civilization 7’s multiplayer mode puts you in the same role as before but against other players. The spontaneity and unpredictability brought forth by another player bring a new set of challenges, freshening up the experience for all players involved. Furthermore, the game supports crossplay, meaning you can play with friends regardless of their choice of platform.

The multiplayer mode features three different Ages to pick from: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. The Antiquity and Modern Ages support five players, while the Exploration Age supports eight players. On the Nintendo Switch, these numbers are brought down to four and six, respectively.

How To Play Multiplayer in Civilization 7

Playing multiplayer in Civilization 7 requires you to have a 2K Games account. If you don’t have an account already, you can make one free of cost. Take note that it is mandatory to do so as the game uses your 2K account to initiate invites and requests. If you’re on PC, this is all you will need to do. Players on consoles will require online subscriptions to PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online, or the Xbox Game Pass Core/Ultimate to access the multiplayer. Without these subscriptions, you will not be able to play multiplayer.

Once your 2K account is ready to go, boot up Civilization 7 and head into the main menu. Scroll through all the options available and click on “Multiplayer.” You will then be given the option to select “Internet” or “LAN.” Pick your mode of choice, and you will be taken to the next menu. Here, at the bottom of your screen, you can select “Quick Join” or “Create Game.” The option to join will add you to a game while creating a game will take you to another menu.

Starting Your Game

If creating a game, you will then have to tweak the settings of the game you wish to create. Here you can select the desired Age, timer, difficulty, and more. Adjust the settings as you see fit and click on “Host Lobby” to get started.

Once the lobby is set, click on the “Join Code” option on the top left corner of your screen. This will give you a code, which you can then share with your friends. They can then go to the multiplayer menu and click on the “Join Code” option at the top of the screen to enter the code and join your game.
