Everything you need to know about Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds, including details on its strengths, weaknesses, how to beat, and more.

Beating Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds can be a difficult challenge for some. The Apex Predator is unlocked as part of a Low Rank Hunting Quest, but the lack of the option of using Decorations can complicate having an effective build against the monster. Although Rey Dau is quite formidable, defeating it is fairly easy, granted you are aware of its strengths and weaknesses.
Here’s everything you need to know about Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds, and how to quickly beat it.
Rey Dau Overview

Rey Dau is a Flying Wyvern, found at the heart of Windward Plains. The Flying Wyvern is essentially the Apex Predator of the Windward Plains, albeit in Low Rank. Rey Dau has access to Thunder elemental affinity, which it can inflict with its tail, horns, and wings. The basic skeleton of the monster is based on the likes of Rathalos, albeit with a small difference. Rey Dau has retractable horns on its face, which it can use to focus its Lightning attacks on the Hunter. Furthermore, the horns also shield its face from attacks, making it harder to create wounds. However, if you time your attacks right, you can break the horns and deal damage to the monster’s face.
In addition to that, Rey Dau’s tails have spikes which it can use to channel Thunder elemental energy. Similar to Arkveld or Malzeno, Rey Dau can use its tail to attack Hunters, inflicting them with Thunder ailment. The Wyvern also uses the edge of its wings to channel Thunder elemental energy. Additionally, much like Rathalos, Rey Dau tends to stay airborne during battle, occasionally landing to use its Lightning discharge attack.
How To Unlock Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds
Rey Dau is unlocked as part of the main story mission — The Eye of the Storm. This mission is part of Chapter 2. Once you complete this quest, Rey Dau is unlocked as an Optional Hunt. You can talk to Alma to start the optional Rey Dau hunt. This is a great way to grind for the monster’s parts and the Crown (needed for a trophy).
Where To Find Rey Dau
Rey Dau can be found at the heart of Windward Plains, past the desert. Once you defeat the monster in the Low Rank story quest, it can be found roaming the Plains, usually near the Desert and the grazing lands, i.e., the region close to the Hunter’s Base.

Rey Dau Weaknesses

In terms of elemental weaknesses, Rey Dau is weak to Water and Ice Elements. It’s also weak to Poison, Sleep, Blastblight, and Exhaust Statuses. Although Rey Dau is also weak to Paralysis, it won’t proc on the monster unless you’re able to hit its wounds effectively. Do note that if you’re running an elemental build, it’s best to target wounds to deal the most elemental damage on the monster. The Flying Wyvern can also be staggered out of its attacks using Flash Pods.
Rey Dau’s Elemental Weaknesses
- Waterblight
- Iceblight
Rey Dau’s Status Weaknesses
- Poison
- Sleep
- Blastblight
- Exhaust
- Paralysis
As for elements that won’t have any effect on the monster, those are — Fireblight, Thunderblight, and Dragonblight. If you’re using a heavy weapon, i.e., Great Sword, Hammer, or Hunting Horn, it’s best to stick with raw damage against this monster. Given how agile Rey Dau is, you won’t get too many windows to dish out elemental attacks.
Rey Dau Weak Points
Rey Dau’s primary weak points are its Head, Wings, and Tail. The Tail is severable and also can be carved. Furthermore, breaking the Wyvern’s Head and Wings massively reduces its mobility and aggression. Breaking Rey Dau’s horns is also highly recommended, as it reduces the frequency of its focused lightning bolt attacks.

How To Beat Rey Dau in MH Wilds

The battle against Rey Dau is divided into three phases. The first phase, as usual, is relatively easy compared to the other two. In its final phase, Rey Dau becomes extremely aggressive and stays in its enraged state for a long time, until you topple it or break its horns. Here’s a breakdown of the three phases of the battle:
Phase 1
- In its first phase, Rey Dau usually uses its focused thunder attack very sparingly. Instead, most of its attacks consist of tail slam, swipe, and stomp.
- In the first phase, your primary objective is to dish out as much damage as possible, preferably to the monster’s head and wings.
- Concentrate your attacks on its head to create wounds. Follow this up with a Focus Strike to deal a ton of damage and also potentially break its head or horns.
Phase 2
- The second phase initiates as soon as Rey Dau gets enraged. Once agitated, the monster does a three-hit focused lightning strike. Do note that if you manage to break its horns in the first phase, its tendency to use focused lightning will reduce in subsequent phases.
- In the second phase, it’s best to stay defensive. If you’re using Gunlance, this is the time to use Wide Shells, to dish out damage to its wings.
- In the second phase, Rey Dau also tends to stay airborne and also change locations. However, tracking the monster should be an issue, using the Seikret.
Final Phase
- The final phase starts right after Rey Dau shifts to its regular state. The first part of this phase is similar to Phase 1, albeit with a higher frequency of focused lightning and wing attacks.
- Once you deal enough damage to the monster in this phase, it will retreat to its original location. Take this time to heal yourself, restock on Potions, sharpen your weapon, etc.
- Once you head back to Rey Dau’s nest, start with a charged attack on its head or tail while it’s sleeping. The first hit on a sleeping monster deals double damage.
- Once Rey Dau wakes from its slumber, it will start the battle in its enraged state and will stay in that until either you break its horns or defeat it.
- This phase is all about dealing enough damage to the monster to exhaust it. Once exhausted, you can use a Pitfall or Shock Trap to temporarily immobilize it and capture it.
- Alternatively, you can use the Focus Mode to create wounds and deal damage to them.
Tips To Defeat Rey Dau

Here are some tips that should help you easily defeat Rey Dau in Monster Hunter Wilds:
- Rey Dau always starts the battle with a charged lightning attack. As such, as soon as the hunt starts, you would want to get behind its head to both avoid getting hit and also sneak in a few of your regular combos. Do not overcommit to multiple combos against Rey Dau. Even at Low Rank, Rey Dau can quickly recover from its flinched state and retaliate with an attack of its own. The best course of action is to commit to a couple of combos and then step away from the monster.
- When you start the battle, use your Seikret to mount the Wyvern. This allows you to not only deal a ton of damage right at the start of the hunt, but also create wounds. Once you dismount Rey Dau, you can immediately do a Focus Strike to pop the wounds and get a free stagger on the monster. This comes in very handy for certain weapon types. For instance, in the case of Great Sword, dealing damage to wounds using Focus Strike allows you to immediately transition into a True Charged Slash, which deals a ton of damage.
- Once you mount Rey Dau, you can also transition to a Wall Bang. This lets you deal a ton of damage to the monster, while also toppling it.
- Once Rey Dau is enraged, you would want to stay at a medium distance from the monster. This is where it starts spamming its lightning attacks. Furthermore, if you can time your blocks right, you can initiate a Power Clash during its wing-lightning attack. If you’re not confident with your block or Offset Attack timings, it’s best to stay away from the monster and retaliate once it has landed on the ground.
- Unlike Rathalos, Rey Dau takes more damage to its head than its legs. As such, it’s best to focus your attacks on the monster’s head. You can use both Pitfall and Shock Traps to immobilize the Wyvern.
