How to tame animals in Ark: Survival Evolved?

Taming the animals in Ark: Survival Evolved allows you to use creatures for travel, combat, gathering, and more. The game offers different methods of taming based on the type of creature.

Knockout Taming

This process is used for dinosaurs and aggressive creatures. You need to knock out the creatures and feed them food until they’re tamed. You can see a bar for “Torpidity” on the creature stats. Your main goal is to deplete this bar before reducing the dinosaur health bar. Once done, the animal will become tranquilized. This allows you to proceed with the taming process, so add the food to your inventory. You can use several weapons for additional torpidity damage. Club is a straightforward weapon that you can use to tame the animals. This is a melee weapon, allowing you to tackle the creature in close range.

We don’t highly recommend this weapon as it doesn’t deal much torp damage to knock out the animals. You can either use a Tranq arrow that can deal good torp damage. Get narcotics to craft the Tranq arrows. Make sure you’re at level 6 to make this weapon. Collect Necroberries and craft Mortar and Pestle. You need to add Narcoberries and Spoiled Meat to the Mortar and Pestle. This allows you to make the Narcotic that you need to make a Tranq arrow. You can get access to the engram for Stone Arrows at level 21.

Get Narcotic and Stone Arrow and start crafting Tranq Arrow from the crafting tab. Get the Nacroberries and add them to your inventory. You can forcefully let the animal eat the Nacroberries. You need to first make sure if the animal is a herbivore or carnivore. Fish can only eat fish, so you must consider what food that specific animal prefers. Lower-level carnivores will require less meat. Scorpions will require Spoiled Meat to tame. Once you get your weapon, food, Nacroberries, you can tame the animals.

Keep in mind that you don’t need to kill the creature. Make sure your stamina is full as they can attack you as well. Can use the Bolas to tame the creatures, allowing you to immobilize them. You can then deal damage with the club to lower its health pool. Wait for the taming bar to fill before the Unconscious bar reduces. Add the food from your inventory to its inventory. However, the taming bar will not fill if you choose the incorrect food. Once the animal starts waking up, you must feed it the Narcoberries or the narcotic.

Passive Taming

This method is only for taming the Herbivores and special creatures. You need to approach it and feed it manually. Place the food in the far-right slot of your hotbar and get closer to the creature carefully. Press the LMB on the Feed button when prompted. You need to wait for the creature to get hungry again and repeat until tamed. Gacha can feed stone and Equus feed Rockarrots, but you’re required to ride it while taming. The food you feed to the creature is akin to knocking it unconscious with a violent tame.

Fish Basket Non-Violent Taming

Several dinosaurs must be tamed with unique methods. You can use Fish Basket to tame certain aquatic creatures. It requires time for the basket to set up. Use it to capture and tame smaller creatures. The creatures that you tame using the Fish Basket are force-tamed, but they act weirdly than the normal tamed creatures.

Temporary Taming

Most creatures are Temporary Taming or commandable. You can instantly tame creatures by opening the console and typing admincheat forcetame.

Turret Taming

For certain creatures, you need to damage their head using a turret weapon. Turrets themselves are immobile and the most effective one is the Cannon. This weapon deals high damage, making your process of taming faster.
