Super Smash Bros. Melee pro player Abdulazis Al-Yami, professionally known as “Hax$,” passed away on March 25, 2025. The professional player’s family recently launched a GoFundMe program that claimed Hax$ was fighting for his life. The page has now been updated, claiming that Al-Yami is dead, and it is no longer accepting financial support.

While Hax$’s family revealed that he died, they did not reveal the cause of his death. On March 10, 2025, the esports pro told his fans that he missed the Melee community and wanted to return. His fans said they missed him and wanted him to make a comeback, prompting him to make a second post on March 18, 2025, saying:

“I need the Melee community back by my side. I miss my friends so much and can’t go on like this. I’m sorry to all of you for what I did. All I want is to return to the community I once called home.”

Hax$’s Professional Smash Bros. Melee Career Explored

Hax$ was a professional esports player who got into fighting games at a very young age. He was only 15 when he secured a top-eight finish at GENESIS Melee events. The Smash community recognized his talent, and he joined the VGBootCamp esports team in 2014.

After becoming one of the best players at the rookie level in the early 2010s, his career came to a halt after he injured his hand and had to stop competing in 2015. To ensure other pro players did not suffer similar injuries as he did, he became one of the biggest advocates of special controllers to mitigate hand problems in fighting games.

After his recovery, the esports pro won multiple DreamHack events in both singles and doubles formats. In 2023 and 2024, he won nine tournaments at events and secured more than 20 top-eight finishes at major events. He stopped competing in esports events in July 2024 without citing any reasons.

The Controversy That Shook the Smash Bros. Melee Community

Hax$ was involved in one of the biggest controversies in Smash Bros. Melee history in 2021. He released a 2.5-hour video talking about how William “Leffen” Hjelte was a threat to the Melee community. The video was made using a 136-page manifesto that failed to establish anything meaningful against Leffen. While Leffen is a controversial figure due to his toxic behavior,

Tournament organizers analyzed Hax$’s claims and found him guilty of making unreasonable claims. The player was banned from attending professional events, claiming that he was misunderstood. Over 20 tournament organizers banned him indefinitely, but he returned in 2023.

Even after the unbans, Hax$ continued to tell everyone that the media was trying to cover up his story. He made multiple videos accusing Smash Bros. Melee community members of various wrongdoings. Internet users asked him to present proof of his claims, which he seemingly never provided.
