When you start a run in No Return, the game asks you which difficulty you want to choose. Not only does your choice set the bar of difficulty, but you also get a different score modifier, which affects your overall score.

Here are all the choices you get for the difficulty modes in The Last of Us 2 No Return mode:

Very Light Mode

This is the easiest difficulty mode that you can choose while playing No Return. The enemies are very weak, and there are tons of resources scattered around for you to loot. However, there is no score modifier for this one. We recommend playing this mode to learn the basics of No Return.

Light Mode

Light is nearly the same as Very Light, and the enemies still show minimum aggression. However, you can see a bit less loot scattered around this time. It’s still plentiful, but the difference is a bit noticeable. The score modifier increases for the first time to 1.20x.

Moderate Mode

Moderate is the normal difficulty in No Return. This is what we recommend while playing most of your runs in, unless you want to challenge yourself. The enemies pose enough threat to be a slight challenge but are not overwhelming. The resources become limited as well, so players have to think about how to manage them. The score modifier for this mode is 1.50x.

Hard Mode

This mode is where things slowly start to ramp up. You can notice the increased aggressiveness of enemies and the scarcity of resources slowly becoming a problem. The score modifier is increased to 1.80x.

Survivor Mode

We do not recommend playing this mode unless you know what you are doing. The enemies become very aggressive, and resources are extremely rare. You are forced to utilize your characters properly to even get a chance at surviving. However, the modifier is increased to 2.00x, which boosts your score by a lot.

Grounded Mode

This is the final challenge for any Last of Us 2 No Return veterans out there. There are massive changes to the gameplay, which all negatively affect the player to give them the hardest of challenges.

First, Listen Mode and HUD are tweaked so that you cannot rely on them. And you get almost no resources, which makes this mode borderline unfair. The enemies are strong and aggressive, with even the basic enemies posing a run-ending threat. The only great thing about this mode is the 2.50x score modifier, which is the highest out of any other mode. This alone makes surviving the Grounded difficulty worth it.

Custom Mode

This is a rather fun mode, which allows the player to customize their gameplay experience for the No Return mode. You can enable and disable various effects that can completely change how No Return works. This difficulty mode potentially allows you to create your challenges and difficulties for you to enjoy.

These were all the No Return difficulty modes in The Last of Us 2. Which difficulty are you playing on?
