Choosing the right class in Oblivion Remastered can shape your entire playthrough, especially if you’re diving in for the first time. With so many options available, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

This guide breaks down the best classes for a first-time experience and which one to pick for getting the most out of the game’s combat system.

The Best Class To Choose in Oblivion Remastered

Oblivion features 21 prebuilt classes to choose from when you begin a new game. There is also the option to make a custom class, which lets you tailor a specialized playstyle beyond the pre-built classes. However, for new players, creating a custom class may involve leveling up skills and attributes at random without realizing which ones work synergistically. Therefore, we recommend—both for convenience and for RP—picking a pre-built class and progressing it to your liking.

The most straightforward classes offered are the Warrior, Rogue, Archer, Barbarian, Healer, and Mage. However, none of these classes—bar the Mage—are considered top tier for experiencing the most of what Oblivion has to offer. For that, we go to the more complex classes that blend traits from the aforementioned ones for a powerful and enjoyable playstyle.

A Witchhunter combines an Archer’s bow skills and a Mage’s spells to become a glass cannon ranged specialist with access to summons. The Crusader class uses a warrior’s combat prowess along with a Healer’s restoration magic for a paladin-like playstyle.

The Spellsword and Battlemage

The second-best class we recommend for its power, versatility, and enjoyability is the Spellsword. The class combines swordsmanship and heavy armor with Destruction, Illusion, Restoration, and Alteration spells. The Spellsword’s combination of skills makes it the perfect class to enter the fray swinging a sword and casting spells.

For first-time players, we stress choosing a class with access to magic, since Oblivion is known for its treasure trove of spells and focus on magecraft. Therefore, the top class we recommend is the Battlemage.

The class has increased access to spells without losing out on close-combat ability. Compared to the Spellsword, the Battlemage suffers from a lack of Endurance in close quarters but makes up for it with increased Strength. Battlemages also have access to Conjuration spells and can summon a variety of minions to tank and deal damage for them on the frontline.
