However, some of these sequels, while they are solid games, tend to cause a big split within the fandom. Fans disagree with the new direction of the gameplay or story and end up debating online. So, here are the five most divisive sequels that shook their respective fandoms.
1. Final Fantasy XV
Final Fantasy XV went through development hell, as it was remodeled from Final Fantasy Versus XIII. As a result, fans were already split because many of them were looking forward to the gritty vibe of Versus XIII. Additionally, when the game dropped, it felt unfinished and lacked quality in many departments. This made it one of the most divisive Final Fantasy games, as players were extremely critical.
On the other hand, there were also many players who appreciated the beautiful story. In addition, they claim that Final Fantasy XV’s Royal Edition turned it into a complete experience, as it added new areas and story cutscenes.
2. Dark Souls 2
Dark Souls 2 is easily one of the most divisive games of all time. There are multiple reasons, from the graphical downgrade to the clunky gameplay. However, the biggest reason is possibly the fact that Hidetaka Miyazaki did not direct Dark Souls 2. Fans are very critical of Dark Souls 2 and treat this game as the franchise’s black sheep.
However, there are also players who believe Dark Souls 2 is a good game. They claim that Dark Souls 2 has a magical vibe that no other game in the series offers. Additionally, the multiplayer in Dark Souls 2 is widely regarded as the best in the series, as it was properly balanced and broken weapons were promptly nerfed.
3. The Last of Us 2
The Last of Us 2 is another game that not only divided the Naughty Dog fanbase but gamers as a whole. As the original was so beloved, the direction of the sequel’s story made many players angry, to say the least. The death of certain characters and the whole theme of vengeance being bad was enough to spark debates online.
Players took sides on the story, with the argument lasting years after release. It became relevant again as season 2 of its TV adaptation has recently dropped.
4. DmC: Devil May Cry
While DmC: Devil May Cry is more of a reboot, it is still part of the franchise and thus counts as a sequel. As Devil May Cry content is very scarce, fans were disappointed to see that a new game in the series would feature new characters. As Dante and Vergil were completely redesigned and given new personalities, to say fans were angry would be an understatement.
Regardless, there were still fans who appreciated the game’s core gameplay and believed that it improved upon the original formula quite well.
5. Tekken 8
Tekken 8 decided to innovate the franchise’s decades-old gameplay by adding new mechanics. It was always going to be divisive, as Tekken fans are very sensitive about changes to the gameplay. However, the Heat mechanic prioritizing offense and turning defense into a disadvantage made fans very upset. Additionally, the changes introduced in season 2 doubled down on the offensive aspect, leading to Tekken 8 being review-bombed.
